The United States will deploy HIMARS rocket launchers to Latvia as part of Exercise NAMEJS, demonstrating "rapid deployment" of the systems on NATO's eastern flank. This was reported in a press release from the command of the US Army in Europe and Africa.
The US will transfer two HIMARS MLRS to Latvia, after which they will be deployed in two different regions of the country as part of the NAMEJS exercises. Two C-130 military transport aircraft will be used for the transfer. It is worth noting that this is not the first deployment of these complexes on Latvian territory, as well as the M270 MLRS. In May of this year, firing was carried out at the Adazi military base as part of the Summer Shield 2022 exercises.
The US Army Europe and Africa Command will deploy two M142 MLRS (HIMARS) and about ten troops to Latvia in support of the NAMEJS national readiness exercise on September 26 to demonstrate the rapid deployment of a precision-guided weapons long-range on NATO's eastern flank
- said in a statement.
Earlier, all three Baltic republics announced plans to purchase American MLRS HIMARS, and Estonia and Lithuania have already begun to purchase. In July of this year, the US State Department approved the supply of six MLRS and ammunition to Tallinn. Estonia plans to receive all six new MLRS by 2025. The contract value is $500 million. In addition, Estonia plans to receive both conventional ammunition and long-range missiles capable of delivering strikes at a distance of up to 300 km.
By issuing permission to supply these complexes to the Baltic countries, the United States is actually deploying missiles with a firing range of up to 300 km near the borders of Russia, and upon receipt of PrSM - up to 500 and more. And there are no restrictions on accommodation here.
