“The hardest battle in Ukraine”: the NYT assessed the scale of the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Kherson
At the moment, the Kherson direction remains one of the main areas for the offensive operation for the Kyiv regime. Despite the constant bloody attacks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine failed to achieve a decisive breakthrough here in three months.
- noted in The New York Times, assessing the scale of the battle.
According to the author, for a long time the Kyiv regime declared its intention to defeat the Russian group on the right bank of the Dnieper and capture Kherson. In this regard, large reinforcements were transferred here, largely exposing the Kharkov direction. As a result, the defense of the RF Armed Forces in the Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog section of the theater of operations was seriously strengthened.
As noted in the NYT, the Russians erected powerful defenses along the entire front line - trenches that zigzag around irrigation canals; fortified firing positions - bunkers, pillboxes; anti-tank trenches dug by bulldozers and covered with concrete slabs [probably scarps].
But the main losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are not in close combat - "few shot from a machine gun, death comes from afar in the form of artillery shells"; This is confirmed by front-line doctors. At the same time, fire support for the advancing battle formations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is minimal.
American journalists interviewed dozens of commanders of Ukrainian units and ordinary soldiers, who unanimously stated about the huge problems in the Kherson direction:
In response to these statements, the Ministry of Defense is defending the chosen offensive strategy. The press secretary of the military department voiced the position of the command:
As a result, the offensive operation continues. To date, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have occupied small territories in the north of the Kherson region, where they are suffering heavy losses. But, as indicated in the publication, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have no choice - if they do not achieve success in the near future, then after the start of the October rains, which turn the roads into mud, this will not be possible at all. Therefore, the attacks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are constantly renewed in order to eventually capture Kherson and, as noted, "demonstrate the usefulness of the weapons transferred by the West."
