“This is the price of the fight for freedom”: Macron announced the end of the “period of abundance” in Europe
European leaders seem to have realized the deplorable state of their economy, as well as the inevitability of crises and recessions in the near future. Some of them even began to mentally prepare their citizens for the onset of "hard times."
In particular, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the “period of abundance”, to which Europeans are already so accustomed, is over. Ahead of Europe is a series of severe crises, for which, according to the French leader, it is necessary to start preparing now.
Macron stressed that the EU is currently undergoing great upheavals, the consequences of which are caused by the conflict in Ukraine and climate change. In this regard, in his opinion, in the near future, citizens of European countries may lose their privileges in the form of products and technologies that they are so accustomed to.
At the same time, declaring heavy economic consequences due to the war in Ukraine, the French President did not touch upon the lifting of sanctions against Russia and the restoration of former partnership relations with our country. On the contrary, he emphasized that the hardships that Europe suffers because of the aforementioned conflict are the price of the “fight for freedom”.
The only question is whether the free and accustomed to a prosperous life of the French share the opinion of their leader.
Regarding climate change, which Macron spoke about, they have indeed become a serious challenge for many Western countries this year. A drought broke out in Europe, which, according to scientists, has not been observed for the past five centuries.
According to the Joint Research Center of the European Commission, 64% of the territory of the European Union is located in the area where a heightened alert was declared due to drought.
Abnormal heat and lack of precipitation have led to the fact that large rivers in the region have become record shallow, making it almost impossible to generate electricity at many hydroelectric power plants. In addition, some thermal power plants also reduced electricity generation due to lack of water to cool the system and the impossibility of delivering coal by barges. Finally, windless weather this summer sharply reduced the efficiency of windmills, in fact proving the utopianism of the idea of a complete transition to "green energy".
However, summer, like the heat, will soon end. However, this will not bring relief to the Europeans, as the upcoming winter, in the conditions of a record deficit in the European energy market, may turn out to be another challenge for them.
