Construction of the Voronezh radar station and plans for the future

The almost continuous process of building and modernizing the Russian missile attack warning system (SPRN) continues. The next stage of such events was completed last year, and now the following work is being carried out. Their goal is to build several new facilities and upgrade existing ones. Recently, some plans for the near future have become known.

New stations

On August 15, at the Army-2022 forum, the chief designer of the early warning system, the general director of the Vympel corporation Sergey Boev spoke about current work and plans for the future. He revealed the main plans for both the construction of new stations and the renewal of the entire system as a whole.

According to S. Boev, the issue of strengthening the radar field in four strategic directions at once is being worked out. So, two new radar stations are already being built in the North and South - I mean the radar station of the Voronezh family in the city of Olenegorsk (Murmansk region) and near Sevastopol.

In addition, projects are being developed for the construction of similar facilities in the North-West and Far East directions. Where exactly these stations will be located and according to what project they will be built, the chief designer did not specify.

In parallel with the construction or development of projects, the modernization of existing radars is being carried out. S. Boev said that such work is proceeding in accordance with the schedule. Now the Voronezh stations in Armavir and Irkutsk are receiving the update - one of the first in the series.

In addition, the chief designer of the early warning system recalled the successes in the overall modernization of the system. It was successfully completed last year, and the early warning system passed state tests. After that, she took up experimental combat duty. However, the timing of the transition to full-fledged combat duty is not specified.

General plans

More ambitious plans for the construction and development of early warning systems in the long term are also known. So, in mid-February, the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper published an interview with Colonel Sergei Suchkov, head of the Main Missile Attack Warning Center (MCPRN) of the Aerospace Forces space forces. The topic of conversation was recent successes and plans for the future.

The head of the Main Center of the PRN recalled that by now, a ground echelon consisting of 10 radar stations has been built and is functioning as part of the warning system. These are mainly modern Voronezh stations, but older models also remain in operation. Due to all these radars, a continuous radar field was created along the perimeter of the borders. Provides guaranteed detection of attacking ballistic missiles in a wide range of ranges and altitudes.

At present, the ground echelon of early warning systems is being finalized. The task of these works is to obtain a continuous two-band field. The second range will be created at the expense of a high-factory readiness radar of the Voronezh family with the appropriate technical characteristics.

In February, Colonel Suchkov spoke about the progress of such construction. At that time, the construction of two facilities in Vorkuta and Murmansk was in the active phase. In addition, the design of another station was completed, intended for deployment in the Far East.

According to the head of the Main Center of the PRN, there are plans to develop the warning system until 2030. By this time, it is planned to modernize several radar stations that are on alert. These will be facilities in the Krasnodar Territory and the Irkutsk Region. In addition, new radar facilities will appear in the Leningrad Region, which are distinguished by improved performance and noise immunity.

It is noted that the implementation of these plans will lead to the completion of the rearmament of the ground component of the early warning system. The system will completely switch to modern high-factory readiness radars and will be able to abandon the objects of the old construction.

Simultaneously with the ground echelon of the PRN system, the space one is developing. This process is due to the build-up of the orbital grouping of space forces. New types of spacecraft are being developed and put into operation. The proposed launch areas for ballistic missiles of a potential enemy must be controlled by several reconnaissance satellites at once. This will increase the reliability of early warning systems, as well as allow you to receive all the necessary information as quickly as possible.

Key component

Thus, the development of early warning systems through the construction of new facilities and the modernization of existing ones continues successfully and gradually gives the desired results. It is easy to see that the main role in these processes is played by modern radar stations of high factory readiness of the Voronezh family. They have been actively built in recent years, and their construction will continue in the foreseeable future.

Antenna "Voronezh-M"

Radar VZG "Voronezh" developed by the concern "RTI Systems". Based on one concept and a set of common solutions, several projects of stations with different features and capabilities were implemented at once. The development of these projects is still ongoing - the last objects of the series are planned to be built in an updated configuration.

The family includes several types of radar. The first to be developed were the meter Voronezh-M, the decimeter Voronezh-DM and the high-potential meter Voronezh-VP. Subsequently, the centimeter Voronezh-SM appeared, as well as the dual-range (meter and centimeter) Voronezh-MSM. The plan for the development of early warning systems provides for the construction of stations of all types.

Stations of the Voronezh family are made according to the scheme of high factory readiness. So, the manufacturer produces large blocks, which are then assembled at the construction site in the shortest possible time. Due to this, the construction time for the early warning radar station was reduced several times, to 1,5-2 years. In addition, labor costs and the outfit of forces and means for construction are reduced.

The radars of the line have a similar architecture, but differ in appearance and in the composition of the equipment. "Voronezh" includes a pre-fabricated antenna structure with AFAR, as well as containers with electronic equipment and a control center with operator jobs. Depending on the type of station, they can be carried out in the same building or in different facilities.

"Voronezh" are over-the-horizon radars and are intended for monitoring airspace and near space. Their main task is to detect the launch and flight of ballistic missiles, as well as the formation of routes and the issuance of information to other components of early warning systems and missile defense systems. Depending on the type of station, targets are detected at ranges up to 6 km and altitudes up to 8 km. Up to several hundred objects are tracked simultaneously.

Having high performance characteristics, modern VZG radars are distinguished by improved operational parameters. Thus, the power consumption does not exceed 0,7-0,8 MW, which is several times less than that of stations of previous generations. In addition, the duty shift was reduced to 15 people.

The construction of the Voronezh station began in 2005. The first facility of this type was laid near the settlement of Voronezh. Lekhtusi in the Leningrad region. Soon the construction of the station in Armavir began. In 2010-13 launched five more construction projects in different regions of the country. Over the next few years, they were completed, after which the new stations passed the necessary tests and took up duty. Two more objects may begin operation this year, and in 2024 the group will be replenished with the next radar.

To obtain maximum efficiency, VZG radars of all major modifications are simultaneously deployed. The joint operation of new stations of various types, as well as older complexes, has made it possible to speed up the process of creating a continuous radar field, and now it makes it possible to develop it. So, now the task is to form a continuous two-band field.

Today and tomorrow

Early warning radar stations of the Voronezh family have been on alert since the beginning of the last decade. Over the past time, they have confirmed the calculated characteristics and showed all their capabilities. The project was recognized as successful, as a result of which construction continues, and in the foreseeable future, the armed forces will receive all the required facilities of this kind.

Plans for the construction and modernization of the Voronezh are scheduled until the end of the decade. They determine the course of current and future construction, as well as further renewal of existing stations. All these processes will have an obvious positive impact on the capabilities and potential of both the radars themselves and the entire early warning system as a whole.

I don’t know if it’s true or not, but they say that the Americans still even have aircraft carriers, and these are the weapons of the First World War. Well, don't believe everything.

        Probably World War II.
For 2000, they were still in reserve. Now the first nuclear reactors are already planning for disposal.

Tanks went through two world wars and many "experts" also buried them, but oddly enough, in all recent conflicts, tanks are very actively used, and the armies are modernizing and updating tank fleets.

Will it make sense after the appearance of hypersonic missiles along our borders? It is not clear, but it makes sense to wait for 10 years.
