A possible hit of large-caliber artillery shells in the fuel storage of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant does not threaten Europe, the radius of radioactive contamination will be minimal, specialists from the US Agency for Arms Control and Disarmament made such a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense reports.
The Russian military department drew attention to a number of publications in the American media, in which the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency claims that if shells hit the ZNPP fuel storage, the radius of radioactive contamination will be only 20 km and will not pose a threat to Europe. This statement is intended to convince Europe that Kyiv's shelling of the nuclear power plant does not pose any threat to the Europeans.
(...) a direct hit of large-caliber artillery shells in a dry storage of spent nuclear fuel will lead to radioactive contamination of the area within a radius of up to 20 km, and an emergency at a nuclear reactor up to a maximum of 30 km
- quotes the Ministry of Defense of American experts.
Meanwhile, Russian experts believe that the shelling of the Kyiv nuclear power plant can damage the cooling system of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which will lead to overheating with the destruction of reactor plants with the release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere and their spread over hundreds of kilometers. The consequences of an accident at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe will be much greater than from the accidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima.
Earlier, the Russian military warned the world community about a provocation being prepared by Ukraine at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant with further accusations of a man-made disaster in Russia.
