Chinese Defense Minister announces PLA's readiness to confront enemies of the state amid escalation of the situation around Taiwan

As the head of the Chinese military department noted, the PLA will protect the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of China, confronting the country's enemies. Wei Fenghe made such a statement while participating in the international security forum in Moscow, speaking via video link. The Minister of Defense of the People's Republic of China stressed that China is a peace-loving state, but is ready to defend its national interests firmly and resolutely. Wei Fenghe noted that Taiwan's independence is not good, and the intervention of external forces will not be successful.
Earlier it became known that the command of the Eastern Theater of Operations of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) on Monday organized a joint patrol around the island of Taiwan, in which the country's naval and air forces were involved. The military maneuvers are being held in response to the visit of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island of Taiwan, which took place on August 2, 2022.
The US administration calls Pelosi's trip a peaceful one and considers the Chinese exercises an excessive and inadequate response to the visit. However, Beijing, apparently, took the trip of the speaker of the American Parliament as a national insult. Pelosi demonstrated that China's official position on the issue of Taiwan is in no way of interest to her, and she is not going to obey the demands of the Chinese side.
Interestingly, even representatives of the UK intervened in the situation. A senior British military official described Pelosi's trip to Taiwan as completely ordinary and accused China of "senseless escalation" of the conflict over Taiwan.
Naturally, in China itself, voices are increasingly heard about the need to more actively protect their national interests. By the way, the Chinese edition of The Global Times emphasizes, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the American adventure against Taiwan a carefully planned provocation.
Lu Xiang, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, commented to the Global Times that the United States treats the island of Taiwan as a political entity, although it does not officially recognize it, and considers itself to have suzerainty over the island. The US position is easy to explain: Washington fears that if control over Taiwan is lost, dominance in the western Pacific will be shaky. In addition, US influence on Japan and South Korea will be weakened, which Washington cannot allow either.
There is no doubt that US provocations against Taiwan will continue. So, at the end of August, another delegation of the US Congress is going to visit the island, despite the blockade carried out by the PLA. It seems that it is time for China to move from words to deeds, since his statements are not perceived by the US authorities as evidence of a resolute attitude towards the Taiwan issue.
Wu Xinbo, dean of the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University, believes that the US and China could enter into a military conflict, but this will destroy the stability and economic prosperity that have been characteristic of the Asia-Pacific region for many years. This, according to the expert, is not beneficial to anyone. But, at the same time, US provocations cannot go unanswered, which is what the Chinese military leadership is hinting at, emphasizing the determination of the PLA to protect national interests.
