The Latvian prosecutor's office did not prosecute a citizen for desecrating a monument to Soviet soldiers-liberators
Another act of vandalism directed against monuments to Soviet soldiers went unpunished in the Baltic country. The Latvian prosecutor's office dropped the charges against the perpetrator of the desecration of the monument, installed at the graves of the Red Army.
In February of this year, in the small Latvian town of Jekabpils, a cannon disappeared from the monument to the liberators from the Nazi invaders. It soon became clear that the cannon was stolen by a local resident Gundars Kalve, who drowned it in the Daugava River (Western Dvina).
As it turned out, the man used a tractor to steal a gun, which was recorded by CCTV cameras. It is strange that no one noticed how the attacker was operating a tractor near the monument. Apparently he didn't notice...
However, even after it became clear to everyone who did it, he will not be punished. The Latvian prosecutor's office decided to close the case, in which the perpetrator could face a sentence of two years in prison.
At the same time, the Latvian prosecutor's office cites strange formulations to justify the defiler of the monument. The department stated that the defendant did not know that the monument was erected at the burial site, and not at the memorial or elsewhere.
It turns out that it is possible to desecrate monuments, especially Soviet ones, but only if they are not installed on the graves.
According to Kalve, for almost 30 years he and his like-minded people have been seeking the demolition of a memorial dedicated to the Red Army, but was refused.
