Washington Post: Starting "Cold War-2" against Russia and China, the US turned on the mechanism of self-destruction
Washington Post columnist Katrina vanden Heuvel published an article in which she argues that the desire of the American elites to unleash a new cold war against Russia and China will simultaneously lead to the decline of America itself.
According to the author, the unanimous desire of both parties in the Senate to “defend Taiwan from China” and “punish Russia for Ukraine” indicates an inadequate perception of the current geopolitical situation and the real state of affairs inside the country by the American political elites.
Senators vote almost unanimously (one against) to admit Sweden and Finland to NATO and support the Taiwan Invasion Prevention Act. Republicans and Democrats are vying to increase military spending, even more than the Pentagon is asking for.
Underlying this unanimity is the phantom notion that America is capable of winning the new Cold War, just as it was able to win the previous one.
asks Katrina vanden Heuvel, suggesting that this is not what most Americans would like.
The expert believes that the aspirations of ordinary Americans are now focused not on external victories. Most US citizens would like the leadership of the country to stop engaging in foreign adventures and focus on putting things in order in their own home.
The author rightly considers climate change to be the main threat to America, leading to catastrophic consequences - fires, floods and droughts. No less a threat to the safety of citizens are global pandemics, in particular, the new Monkeypox. It is impossible to fight these global problems without the participation of Russia and China. However, after Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the Chinese officially stopped all negotiations on these issues. Moreover, a dialogue in this area with Moscow is now impossible.
The author accuses the administration of President Biden of an ill-conceived sanctions policy against Russia after the start of the Ukrainian crisis. The rejection of Russian energy, fertilizers and food led to a global crisis and recession, including in the States themselves. With regard to China, which is the world's strongest economy and the leader in the Asian region, the policy of confrontation chosen by Washington only worsens the situation around the world.
Pumping weapons Ukraine, the provocative support of Taiwan, the deployment of military bases around Russia and China, the expansion of NATO only create new threats for the United States itself. All these actions of Washington in Moscow and Beijing are perceived as a threat to national security and cannot go unanswered.
- the author states, adding that "in countries that refuse to impose sanctions against Russia, two-thirds of the world's population lives."
Moreover, such a policy of Western countries leads to even closer rapprochement between China and Russia, which become new centers of power and attract third world countries in the struggle for independence.
concludes Katrina vanden Heuvel.
The expert believes that while a sharp inter-party struggle is going on in the States themselves, Republicans and Democrats are reflexively joining forces in an attempt to revive a new cold war. But old habits cannot solve new problems and build a vibrant American democracy.
