Fighting vehicles on the way to the position

In the current Special Operation, the Russian army uses a variety of artillery systems with various qualities and capabilities. The other day it became known that self-propelled guns 2S23 "Nona-SVK" appeared in the combat zone. Equipment of this type has special combat capabilities that are used to solve assigned tasks and destroy various ground targets.

Self-propelled guns in battle

In the first days of August, photos of the Nona-SVK SAO involved in the Special Operation appeared on social networks and specialized resources. They depicted a combat vehicle from the “O” group with the personal name “Shu-Oshu”. It was reported that the self-propelled gun serves as part of the 55th separate motorized rifle brigade of the ground forces, stationed in the Republic of Tyva.

A few days later, the Ministry of Defense published an official video dedicated to the combat work of the Nona-SVK crews. His heroes have already become two combat vehicles from the "O" group. This is the already known "Shu-Oshu" and another self-propelled gun called "OmMani", as well as their combat crews.

The video shows the exit of two SAOs to a combat position along a dirt road in a forest. Arriving at the place, the crews are preparing for firing: specifying the coordinates and data for firing. It is curious that the unit commander gives orders and transmits information in the Tuvan language, which provides additional protection against radio interception. After the necessary preparation, loading and firing is carried out. This time, the universal guns of self-propelled guns use standard 120-mm mortar mines.

Target reconnaissance and fire adjustment is carried out using an unmanned aerial vehicle. The same UAV showed the results of the shooting. So, in a forest plantation, near a dirt road, there are camouflaged positions and enemy materiel. However, in their place there is a bright flash, after which a column of smoke and dust rises. Successive shots successfully hit two targets at once in the same area.

Ready to shoot

It is very likely that the SAO 2S23 "Nona-SVK" was used in the Special Operation earlier, before the beginning of August - however, these episodes of combat work did not fall into the frame. In addition, it is clear that the recent shootings will not be the last. In Ukraine, there are still enough targets for demilitarization, and the artillerymen of the 55th brigade and other formations will have to continue their work. It can be expected that "Nony-SVK" and their crews will again become the heroes of the reports of the Ministry of Defense and the press in the future.

For ground forces

At the end of the seventies, a new self-propelled gun 2S9 "Nona-S" was created specifically for the airborne troops. The main armament of this armored vehicle was a 120-mm rifled gun-howitzer-mortar 2A51 with wide combat capabilities. Soon it was decided to develop a similar self-propelled gun for the battalion artillery of the ground forces.

In the early eighties, several options were developed for adapting the existing fighting compartment with the 2A51 gun to the needs of the ground forces. Some of these projects even went as far as building and testing experimental equipment. Based on the results of these works, the optimal shape of the future CAO was chosen. It was proposed to perform it on the wheeled chassis of an armored personnel carrier and equip it with a modified fighting compartment.

The unit commander clarifies the data for firing

In 1984, the Perm Machine-Building Plant (now Motovilikhinsky Plants) began developing a new combat vehicle, which received the 2S23 index and the name Nona-SVK. The use of ready-made developments and solutions made it possible to build and submit a prototype for testing in the same year. Testing and fine-tuning took several years and ended in success.

By the beginning of the nineties, mass production of the new CAO was mastered in Perm. Then, in April 1991, a decision was issued on its adoption. For well-known reasons, production did not pick up high rates. In total, only a few dozen combat vehicles were built and transferred to the troops. They were supplied to artillery units of motorized rifle battalions from the ground and coastal forces. Self-propelled guns replaced the 2S12 Sani mortar complex.

Technical features

Product 2S23 "Nona-SVK" is built on the basis of a modified wheeled chassis of the armored personnel carrier BTR-80. Saved bulletproof / anti-fragmentation armor, power plant and chassis. At the same time, the internal equipment of the hull was changed for the installation of a new fighting compartment, and some systems and assemblies were also improved.

One of the ammunition stacks and a driver

Based on the results of such refinement and installation of the fighting compartment, the armored vehicle retained its previous dimensions, although its height increased. The combat weight increased to 14,5 tons. At the same time, the running characteristics remained the same. The possibility of swimming is also preserved, incl. with water shooting.

The main armament of the 2S23 self-propelled gun is a 120-mm rifled “universal” 2A60 gun, made on the basis of the 2A51 product for Nona-S. It has a barrel length of 24,2 klb and is equipped with a vertical wedge gate. For the use of mortar mines, a movable obturator-rammer is used, which is placed in the chamber along with ammunition.

The gun is installed in the turret on hydropneumatic recoil devices. The design of the SAO allows horizontal guidance within 35 ° to the right and left of the neutral position. Elevation angles - from -4° to +80°, which allows you to conduct effective fire with different ammunition.

Driver at work

Product 2A60 can use the widest range of ammunition. New 120-mm projectiles for various purposes have been developed; mortar mines of existing types are also used. It is possible to use guided munitions such as Gran or Kitolov-2. The selected caliber also allows the use of foreign mortar mines. In the fighting compartment of "Nona-SVK" 30 shots of any type are transported.

Using compatible ammunition, "Nona-SVK" can fire direct fire or overhead trajectories. Fire characteristics depend on the type of shot used. So, conventional shells and mines are sent to a distance of no more than 9 km. When using active-reactive, this parameter increases to 12-17 km. Ammunition of various types carry up to 4-5 kg of explosive.

The crew of four has all the means of fire control corresponding to the tasks being solved. The commander uses the TKN-3A combined sight to monitor and search for targets. The gunner has a direct fire sight 1P30 and a panoramic sight 1P8. Communication and data transmission is provided by the R-173 VHF radio station.

Known Benefits

The Nona-S and Nona-SVK projects were based on original ideas aimed at expanding the range of tasks to be solved and improving the main characteristics. This concept was implemented, and the resulting combat vehicles have a number of important features and advantages. All of them are well known and have been repeatedly demonstrated in practice, both during exercises and in real operations.

SAO 2S23 "Nona-SVK" is built on the BTR-80 wheeled chassis. It provides a sufficient level of protection, as well as high driving performance and mobility. Under its own power and without the use of a tanker, the self-propelled gun is capable of covering long distances without wasting valuable motor resources. At the same time, high cross-country ability on the ground is also ensured, which allows you to quickly get to a given position. Finally, the SAO 2S23 chassis is maximally unified with one of the main armored vehicles of the ground forces, which simplifies its operation and supply.

However, the main advantages of Nona-SVK are associated with the weapons used. The 2A60 gun, due to its special design, is capable of using ammunition of different classes and solving the problems of various artillery systems. In fact, it is a replacement for the 120-mm mortar and an addition to howitzer artillery. In this case, it is possible to fire direct fire.

Target hit

Due to such weapons, the 2S23 self-propelled gun is capable of solving a wide range of combat missions and hitting a variety of targets, small and area, both directly on the battlefield and in the depths of the enemy’s defense. It is possible to work in reconnaissance and strike circuits, incl. built using modern means of detection and correction. With all this, "Nona-SVK" is used at the battalion level, which has a positive effect on the overall fire capabilities of the ground forces.

Today and tomorrow

SAO 2S23 "Nona-SVK" has repeatedly participated in various exercises, and now they have the opportunity to show their capabilities during a full-fledged military operation. In general, such equipment and its calculations cope with the assigned combat missions and help to carry out the forced demilitarization of Ukraine.

It should be noted that the self-propelled guns of the Nona series are quite old, and this imposes certain restrictions. However, their modern functional counterparts have already been developed - the Lotos and Magnolia SAO with universal tools. And it can be assumed that the experience of the Nona-S and Nona-SVK machines in the current Special Operation will positively affect the course of promising projects and the subsequent rearmament of the army.

Didn't they understand K. Ryabov? His task is to exaggerate the merits of our weapons (without saying anything about their shortcomings) and at the same time show the worthlessness and futility of weapons and military equipment produced by Ukraine and the one that it receives from partners ... In general, such a hat-shaker-corrector of articles from Wiki is worse than a pest.

        What then is your task?
"Nona-S" participated in competitions for the accuracy of hitting a target, in our exercises of the Airborne Forces with the Americans. And do you know who won?

Well, why are you attacking the author-authors ... Write a high-quality work yourself if, in your opinion, the material presented has noticeable shortcomings. It is important to note that VO readers are not all extra material experts, so enlightenment is good. The question of comparing the parameters of our wheeled self-propelled guns with foreign ones is a big study. The practice of using a wheeled mortar and the advantages and disadvantages of a mortar with respect to the same 122mm D-30 is also a separate issue. Evaluation of carrier platform options for the artillery part is another topic. The issues of combat use of mortars and wheeled mortars in particular in the SVO are a big topic.
Summarizing, I agree with you that the topic, of course, has not been disclosed, but it is unlikely that it will be possible to disclose it completely not specifically to this particular author, regardless of his merits or demerits, but simply the topic is too broad. However, this is not a VAKovsky magazine. Rather, it is a club of lovers of military equipment ... I may be wrong.

The design of the SAO allows horizontal guidance within 35 ° to the right and left of the neutral position.
It can be assumed that horizontal aiming is limited by the stability of the machine, but they write about Nona-S that the matter is in the hoses of the pneumatic system for blowing the barrel.
Officially, the 2S9 tower has the ability to turn horizontally in the range of angles from -35 to +35 degrees, however, when the hoses of the pneumatic system are disconnected, circular firing from the CAO is possible in manual mode

Ukraine still lacks targets for demilitarization
Damn true point! More like enough.

I am aware of this, but the air was filled with a compressor, in my opinion, the same as that from the cartridges sucked out the cinders - the recoil of the gun had nothing to do with it.

And how will you do this when using mines? There is minimal payoff. At the same time, the equipment includes a compressor, which, when the engine is running, quickly and efficiently pumps the supply of compressed air into the cylinders.

smile So I didn’t hear it either, it’s just that when the gun rolls back, so much energy is wasted ....

I read that air purge is usually used on ships. Rarely on tanks. For example, the French Leclerc.
But the hoses, which are the only reason for limiting the horizontal operation of the implement, are, in my opinion, an unfortunate solution.

Most likely, the hoses interfere because when shooting "sideways" the accuracy drops due to the instability of the machine. That is, shooting along is regular use, but not across.

The tracked chassis is stiffer. Why wheeled self-propelled guns are rare. And they also shoot along the car. Stops are needed across. Even KPVT BRDM unwound. The first shot still went where it should. The rest is all over the place.

Made and abandoned due to low chassis stability and low rate of fire. What was suitable for a howitzer was not appropriate for a mortar.

With the stability of the chassis and the rate of fire, by the way, everything was in order with the Hosta. Problems were observed with the fire regime, but they did not affect the conclusions of the state commission on the advisability of adopting the system into service.

I once read that the MTLB chassis swayed for too long after the shot and there was not enough rate of fire for the mortar. Enough for a howitzer, not for a mortar. Not an expert on tracked chassis, but I would venture to suggest that the situation with shock absorbers is better on the BMP-3 chassis.

That's just the chassis from the BMP-3 during the tests of the "Vienna" at one time had problems. Its depreciation is good, which is great for cross-country driving, but it did not affect the buildup after a shot in the best way.
The problem is solvable, the only trouble is that the "Vienna" did not go to the domestic aircraft.
Well, does the "Khosta" swing when fired, it is well shown in the video:

Ready to leave the discussion of the chassis, until better times. The question under discussion is very specific.
But is there a problem in the fact that neither "Vienna" nor "Khosta" went into the armed forces? I'm more concerned about the delay with the Phlox self-propelled guns. At first, I did not like the car, because of the characteristics of the mortar as such. But, if a wheeled vehicle is placed at the disposal of a motorized rifle battalion to partially replace the 120-mm Sani mortar, then this will be an undoubted fire boost. A large portable ammunition load, drive automation, short deployment time, low cost of the chassis, all these are the undoubted advantages of the Phlox self-propelled guns, even though the vehicle was developed for landing.

So they could not shove a longer mortar gun into the body of the armored personnel carrier. And the ammunition load would be small. And most importantly psychology. It is not a pity to issue wheeled self-propelled guns to the battalion, and the battalion commander will have a powerful means of fire support within his visibility and coverage area.

There was a good self-propelled gun "Vienna" but it was hacked to death ... It would be interesting to create, according to the same principle, a 160mm assault gun capable of both mines and special shells, for the assault on cities and fortified areas, it turned out in Mariupol that weapons are not redundant . Therefore, a 160mm gun on a tank chassis and protection similar to tanks (but with more emphasis on anti-cumulative) will be in great demand, the need for heavy assault units is very high, 2-3 divisions would be enough, that is, 200-300 assault self-propelled guns ..

An interesting question, I myself thought that a 160-mm mortar would be attractive. But there are two problems here, compared to a 152-mm howitzer projectile, there are almost no advantages in filling cluster munitions, and a mine will be even heavier. There are still two ways, to make a 120-mm mortar cannon on a tank chassis, or to make a mortar of an even larger caliber, somewhere around 180-mm for greater power of cluster munitions. Difficult topic to discuss.

What about cassettes? There, the native projectile for NONA is considered the most technologically advanced and all types of 120mm mines, both ours and bourgeois, are a bonus, and 160mm, thanks to the thin walls of the projectile (like NONA, which is close in power to 152mm), will give power close to 203mm, something that is needed in fortified areas and in a normal city .. A land mine, first of all, and a cassette, well, it’s so due to the circumstances, or maybe the Kornet ATGM will get launched ..

I would very much ask you not to throw phrases like "read the history of NONA." Believe me, I know her well.
Shells for the "NONA" family have never been and cannot be "the most technologically advanced". The body of the 3OF49 projectile has a leading belt with ready-made rifling, which requires precise compliance with manufacturing tolerances. For an ordinary projectile, the leading belt is just a copper strip stuffed onto the body.
At the bottom of the projectile there is a protruding mount for the charger, not to say that it has a complex profile, but compared to conventional projectiles, it is still a joy for the manufacturer.
The case itself is not composite, it is machined as a single part, which significantly complicates the process of its filling by pressing. But the phlegmatized hexogen, which is part of the Nonovsky shells, is equipped in this way!
Well, where is the manufacturability, can you tell me?
I would say exactly the opposite - shells for combined guns are the most NON-technological shells from among the OFS.

                  Oh really?
This is probably why the cost of a 120-mm shot for "NONE" costs some miserable 1,5-2 times more than a 152-mm shot for "Msta".

Not everything went smoothly, of course. There were also dramatic situations. Everything new is fraught with all sorts of "squiggles". At first we made ammunition on a milling machine, then we turned to specialized companies to design a special cutter for us, but everywhere we were refused: “This is impossible.”
As a result, they themselves designed, made a cutter and began to cut grooves on the projectile on a universal gear-cutting machine and successfully combined them with the grooves of the bore. In the meantime, this was not the case, the barrel had to be taken to the workshop, the projectile was driven through it, it was branded in one of the positions, and the angular rotation was fixed during loading. When shooting at the range in this way, they combined it. Blanks for shells were taken at the factory where shells for the 122-mm howitzer were made.

After we convinced everyone at our institute that it was necessary to make just such systems, we transferred the development of the projectile to a specialized organization of the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering (as the ammunition ministry was then called). And now the design bureau of this ministry received an award for the most technological projectile in the industry. Compared to a projectile with a copper leading belt, here you only need to cut grooves on a gear-cutting machine, and on a projectile with a copper belt, you need to make a groove, caulk copper (belt) into it, and grind it. In short, there were about 30 operations instead of one on our projectile.

Yes. This kind of cars are indispensable for urban battles. I remember the "Sturmtigr" German. 380 mm. They wrote that the house was folded from the hit. A good thing. It would come in handy now.
Most importantly, there are no requirements for range, accuracy, etc., which the military loves so much.
Ours were still allowed into the war 305 mm NURSs. Just on the ground. Sometimes with a box. Also the effect is great. The elongated demining charges are now prikolhozili. A good idea. Gorynychi snake.

However, their modern functional counterparts have already been developed - SAO "Lotos" and "Magnolia" with universal tools

Something tells me that in fact there is no replacement, but just single copies for the exhibition.

The NWO showed that we are exploiting everything that we got from the USSR, only TIGERS, Typhoons and other MCIs appeared and that’s all. Yes, and in large quantities only TIGERS.
We still use the UAZ Loaf, although a replacement could be made on the basis of the Tiger.
In general, as time has shown, there is no need to spend money on parades, and even more so on equipment for parades.
PS I found out that we are holding a tank biathlon .... it's time!

Therefore, a 160mm gun on a tank chassis and protection similar to tanks (but with more emphasis on anti-cumulative)

The need for an assault tank to appear as an analogue of the ISU-152 has long been discussed at specialized forums, but effective managers have only enough brains for cutting.

Well, not everything is so sad - work is underway. The key here is to make a new teletank with reliable communication in urban environments. And the second is no less important - and 125 mm with the usual OFS is quite sufficient for processing window openings in the city. Pointing angles to increase yes relative to regular guns. Just a larger caliber - a smaller portable BC ...

And where is the promised self-propelled gun "Phlox"? A very good project, a large portable ammunition load, a cheap chassis and guidance automation. It is a pity that the car was delayed a lot.
According to the same model, on a similar chassis, an automatic 82-mm mortar 2B9 "Vasilek" would look very good.

The long-barreled gun has an excess mass compared to the 152 mm mortar-PU, and besides, it cannot fire at closed targets. The Germans during the Second World War also had self-propelled guns with 150 mm infantry guns (mortars) - Brummar for example.
