Chinese Defense Ministry: China ready to take military action if Pelosi visits Taiwan
The irritation of the Chinese authorities over the repeatedly announced visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan is growing every day. Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman Tan Kefei says that if a third person in the official hierarchy of the American leadership arrives in Taiwan, Beijing will take decisive measures, including military action, to prevent external interference in the country's sovereignty.
Earlier, the Financial Times newspaper cited the words of a representative of the Chinese Ministry of Defense, in which Tan Kefei directly warns Washington that Beijing is ready to start a military conflict if Pelosi's visit to Taiwan does take place. Moreover, the publication noted that this was not just a private statement by a representative of the Chinese military department, but “a serious warning from the Joe Biden administration.”
- referring to sources in the leadership of the PRC, the newspaper quoted Kefei's words.
According to Bloomberg, Pelosi may visit Taiwan in early August during a tour of Asia. So far, the official plans of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives for a visit to Taipei have not been announced. It seems that there is no consensus in the US leadership whether it is worth checking how real the "last Chinese threat" is. On the eve of Joe Biden, referring to the position of the Pentagon, the trip of the speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan does not seem to be a good idea at the moment.
The situation around Pelosi's visit and Beijing's loud statements about a tough reaction to Washington's hostile demarche seem to be greatly straining the White House. Not without reason, US President Joe Biden intends to discuss this issue by telephone with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days.
According to The New York Times, the events in Ukraine were led by the American authorities to believe in the reality of the scenario with the Chinese military operation. Washington is now carefully analyzing the defensive capabilities of Taiwan's armed forces. At the same time, Washington does not refuse to supply arms to Taipei, thereby further confusing and exacerbating the situation around the island.
Biden adheres to the principle of supporting the "protection of sovereignty" of Taipei, including to show firmness to voters ahead of the midterm congressional elections. American experts believe that among the many disagreements between Beijing and Washington, it is the Taiwan issue that is the most difficult to resolve.
