Export rocket "305E" at the exhibition

Recently, in service with the Russian military aviation consists of a light multi-purpose guided missile (LMUR) "Product 305". It is intended for use on helicopters of various types and is capable of hitting a wide range of targets. The high performance and potential of this product was previously confirmed during tests, and now it is used in a real military operation.

For different customers

According to known data, the future rocket "305" was developed in the first half of the tenth years by the Kolomna Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering. The customer of the project was the FSB, which needed new guided weapons for special modifications of the Mi-8 helicopter. Not later than 2015-16 the project was completed and all the necessary tests were carried out.

Serial production of LMUR "305" started in 2016 and was carried out in the interests of the FSB aviation. How many rockets this service ordered, how much they cost, and how long production lasted is unknown. In addition, there is still no information about the use of 305 products by its aviation.

In the same period, the Air Force became interested in the new development of KBM. LMUR was studied and passed through the necessary tests, the results of which received a recommendation for adoption. Subsequently, the missile was adopted by attack and transport-combat helicopters of army aviation.

The potential and capabilities of the LMUR missile "305"

The head part of the rocket with an optical system

Until a certain time, the project with the code "305" was only mentioned in unofficial sources. The first display of such a missile took place only last year at the Army-2021 forum. Visitors to the event were shown a mock-up of the rocket in the export version of the 305E. At the same time, the main design features and characteristics became known.

According to some reports, already in 2016-17. serial LMURs were used by Air Force helicopters during various exercises. Then they were used against real targets in Syria. In mid-June 2022, the first reports of the use of such weapons within the framework of the Special Operation for the Protection of Donbass. In particular, video recordings made by optical homing missiles were published.

Details of the combat use of "Products 305" have not yet been disclosed. Perhaps they will appear later. However, even the known data on this missile allow us to imagine its capabilities and overall operational and combat potential.

High Performance

The 305 is an air-to-surface guided missile that is compatible with several different aerial platforms and capable of hitting a variety of ground targets. At the same time, it differs from other weapons in reduced dimensions and weight, but it shows increased flight characteristics. In fact, this is the first aviation missile with such a combination of characteristics and capabilities in service with our Air Force.

Launcher APU-305 on Ka-52 helicopter

LMUR is built in a cylindrical body with a transparent head fairing. In the head part of the product there are X-shaped rudders, in the tail part there is a stabilizer of a similar design. A fairing of small section runs along the hull. The length of the rocket does not exceed 2 m, the body diameter is 200 mm. Starting weight - 105 kg.

A combined guidance system is placed in the head compartment. It includes inertial and satellite navigation devices, as well as optoelectronic seeker and autopilot. All these means ensure the use of the rocket in the "launched-forgotten" mode. There is also a radio station for data exchange with the carrier helicopter. In this case, the telemetry and video signal from the GOS can be sent to the helicopter, and commands are sent to the missile.

"305" is equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead weighing 25 kg. Characteristic transparent elements in the head of the rocket indicate the possibility of using a non-contact laser fuse. There must also be a contact undermining.

Most of the body is occupied by a solid rocket engine. It accelerates the missile up to 250 m/s and provides a range of up to 14,5 km. Depending on the launch altitude, the flight is carried out at altitudes from 100 to 600 m. In the final section, the missile dives at the target.

LMUR flight to the target, a frame from the video from the GOS

The new missile can be used by Mi-28NM and Ka-52 attack helicopters or Mi-8 multi-purpose helicopters. The rocket is transported and launched using the APU-305 device. It has mounts for hanging one ammunition, and is also equipped with a cover to protect the seeker fairing. The missile is controlled by the AS-UAV subsystem, which can be installed on different helicopters.

Potential and benefits

It is easy to see that the LMUR "305" is characterized by increased performance and has a number of important features. First of all, it's new. The rocket was developed just a few years ago according to modern technical specifications and is built on current technologies and component base. It is due to this that high technical characteristics are achieved.

An important advantage is compatibility with several media at once. This missile can be used by the Ka-52 and Mi-28NM, and without a radical upgrade of the onboard equipment. In addition, a missile of this class is being installed on the combat version of the multi-purpose Mi-8 for the first time. All this made it possible to fulfill the requirements of both the army and the special services.

"305" is distinguished by high performance characteristics. In terms of flight range, it surpasses existing missiles for helicopters, such as the Whirlwind or the Ataka. This increases the effectiveness of the missile attack and / or reduces the risks for the carrier helicopter. Also, LMUR is superior to other missiles in terms of mass and power of the warhead. However, it is not clear how effectively this product copes with armored targets - and whether it can be compared with specialized ATGMs.

Moment before hit

Of great interest is the combined guidance system with several modes of operation. With its help, LMUR can hit stationary or moving targets with known and unknown coordinates. Navigation aids provide flight to a given target with its defeat or lead a missile to a given area, where the GOS is included in the work. Also, the GOS can be turned on immediately at start-up. In this case, it is possible to work in the "launched-forgotten" mode or exchange data with a carrier helicopter.

Taking into account various factors, the pilot-operator can choose the optimal operating mode of the rocket and launch it. It is also likely that the product can be retargeted already in flight. Due to the presence of several modes with different features, the probability of successfully hitting a particular target increases, regardless of the existing conditions.

It should be noted that the LMUR complements a number of other helicopter missile weapons, guided and unguided. At the same time, the “Product 305” turns out to be the most long-range and powerful model in this nomenclature and in an understandable way affects the overall capabilities of the helicopter.

Useful novelty

The 305 light multi-purpose guided missile compares favorably in all respects with other modern guided weapons for domestic helicopters. Depending on the situations that arise, it can supplement other aircraft weapons or take on targets that are inaccessible to it. As a result, the overall combat capabilities of the Ka-52 and Mi-28NM helicopters are growing significantly.

Thus, in terms of the combination of technical characteristics and combat potential, the Product 305 can be considered one of the most useful new products in the arsenals of the Air Force and the FSB. And right now, this novelty is demonstrating its capabilities in practice, hitting a variety of targets and enemy targets.

I think on the basis of LMUR (ed. 305) they can make options for execution and purpose. For example, they can replace warheads with OF with tandem-cumulative. Weight can be reduced (from 25 to 6kg). This will either reduce the dimensions of the rocket (which means portability), you can put a more powerful RD and increase the starting impulse (and therefore either speed or flight duration / distance)

Look, in an interview with a designer, one of the modes is really new for the Russian Federation. The missile itself, without specific target designation, searches for a target in the area using a reference image in memory. (We are not the first, the Jews already have this. Meehan, please do not strain and remember - I am not from Israel laughing )
“The second option is that the helicopter detected the target using its sighting system, transmitted the target coordinates to the missile, and then the missile initially flies in inertial mode, and then captures the target according to the standard entered into it,” Kashin said.

the tasks are different and the class of missiles .. Yes, and in most cases, supersonic is not needed for nothing, but in LMUR the most important thing is not the rocket itself, but the proven technology, in fact, the stuffing from the rocket to the center of weight can already be put on anti-tank missiles for helicopters and the earth, the next stage is kamikaze drones with warheads of 3-4 kilos, for attacking at ranges of 20-30 km

As I understand it, from your sofa located somewhere at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, it is not at all clear how army turntables work and how much BC they take per flight. How many missiles can the Ka-52 carry on one pylon 6? Total change 12 SD to 2 norms or not? This FSB works out single targets; they don’t need much. That's why I say that the missile-launcher complex turned out to be crazy for the army, there should be at least 4 of them on one suspension point.

Hehehehe ... it sounds especially good if you know that it was the army who wrote the TTT for the future "product 305".
Then it was called "product 79". But the army team first stopped paying for the already completed stages of work, and then closed the topic altogether.
But their business was not in vain: the faces immediately opened their own topic on SD with the same requirements, only by supplementing the control system with the third mode: the operator during the flight should have been able to redirect the missile to another target. The reason is simple: it was necessary to be able to divert the missile from the captured target, since in practice it often turned out at the last moment that either the information about the location of the liquidation object was false, or the target was identified incorrectly (it's not that car!).
Sometimes they try to present this mode as a mode of firing at an unobserved target - they say, "object 305" supposedly has the ability to search for and capture a target through the missile's seeker after launch. But...
Real work at the training ground showed that it is practically impossible to detect targets in flight, a lot depends on the operator and the interaction interface.
There were real cases of switching targets in flight, which actually confirms the fundamental possibility of additional reconnaissance in flight and hitting an unobserved target.
But this is with an experienced crew. Those who watched this process did not call it anything other than "rocket kung fu".
When in the process of testing the helicopter was replaced (flew away for maintenance), the new crew (who had not previously worked with the complex) could not do that. And this is in polygon conditions (but by the way, in adverse weather conditions).
Analogy - imagine that you have great myopia (optics is the bottleneck of the GOS) and you have to drive a Formula 1 car. Certain skills are required.

And what is everything? How to direct without homing? Or again arrange shamanic dances with keeping the target in the visual visibility of the carrier all the time the rocket is flying?
It is impossible to direct a missile through the GOS - there are "expendable" optics, which can hold a target that has already been captured at a maximum, but it is impossible for combat specialists to search for targets through it.

and what are the goals? It’s one thing, a hot pickup truck or a tank, and if the target is a small hut or a buried pillbox? Not to mention the price of such a GOS module, which will be more expensive than a rocket in itself - now targets are hit after they are detected, only when before its 5-6 km guidance through standard optics turns into shooting at a point, and there it’s already lucky or not .. About the GOS-Brimstones, something didn’t become a prodigy, and the reason is simple - the targets are not always contrasting. So at this stage with taking into account the cost and the need for mass character, it is optics that are better than dancing with GOS

Against the zusuls - yes. Against something a class higher - no longer. The need to keep the target in line of sight of the carrier during the entire time from target acquisition to hit makes this carrier too vulnerable to air defense. Three hundred and fifty is good because after launch you can dump - you don’t need to see the target on the carrier’s onboard system all the time while the rocket is flying.
Better then LGSN and "Orlan-30" for illumination.

And ideally - a blind launch according to the coordinates, and upon arrival in the area - additional reconnaissance, detection and guidance through the optics of the SD. But the price of such a head will be ... well, this is practically "shooting with GOES".

uuuu, i.e. read read, but did not understand what is written? The optical channel from the rocket transmits information to the control panel, which is installed at least on a helicopter, at least on ground equipment, and yes, all the videos that walk on the network are just with bringing the rocket to the target in manual mode , and not "homing". And the carrier itself does not need to keep the target being hit in the field of view, it is enough to be in the zone of signal reception and transmission, and this is 20 km .. And yes, it is very interesting how you will reconnoiter the target on an air-to-surface missile with with a range of 14 km .. you confused a kamikaze drone and a rocket .. Therefore, I repeat once again: a camera + a data reception and transmission module is both faster and cheaper to do, which is exactly what is needed for any long conflict, since with a range of 15 -20 km any MANPADS lose their meaning .. Everything depends on high-quality optics

The operator introduces a correction if necessary. I remember for some reason the Jews sell their Spikes cheaper than the American Javelins .. It's just funny to read when they say that making optics for a rocket is very, very expensive, but to do GOS, which even under ideal conditions will not be able to recognize half of the targets much cheaper.

And yes, in any case, gunners will need to be taught, but this is quite inexpensive to do when developing the necessary software.

Not implemented. There, the camera is purely technical and is sharpened for the seeker guidance system. And direct through it manually - like a bespectacled man without glasses to control the car.

those. before that, there is a seeker on which they somehow managed to aim at the target and shoot in acceptable quality and transmit it through an automated system, but the optical part in it is sooo terrible) do you even understand that you contradict yourself? The seeker is being built, including based on an optical camera that is installed on a rocket or is it not a video transmission from the rocket itself? )))

Shooting at a pre-set target, no one, of course, will look for a target with a rocket camera.

Does lmur have homing without operator intervention?

such an option was still on the x-29, but the question is that it is not very effective, since it is one thing to fuck around the plant, and another thing to a separate warehouse where, according to intelligence, the ammunition was brought

    And I love this product.
From my sofa, only solid pluses are seen. The helicopter hangs 3-4 km from the front line, and takes out something 10 km behind enemy lines.

E-he-he .... On average, a helicopter has 8 minutes of life if it operates at a distance of less than 8 km from the ground crews. You don't have to hang here, you have to slip through, cut in and run away. Therefore, they began to fight for every extra kilometer of the rocket launch. And for the principle "let it go - and get out soon"

this is an over-the-horizon missile and the helicopter is generally out of sight of the enemy. So then I saw the target over the horizon and then forgot

It is also necessary for aircraft to introduce these weapons. Maybe add range.
You can also make a ground version. Our opponents have such solutions. Israel and Britain, for example.

On the Cornet, one such rocket is needed in the collection and a remote control (like on the Stugna).
And massively standard "cheap" missiles will always be relevant.

well, in any case, the remote control will be needed there, since the screen and all that, the main thing is not to steam the brain and do everything quickly, otherwise it will be epic like with the Octopus, which was ready at one time, hell knows when, but due to changes in the design not sure when it will be tested

here, rather, the moment is not in difficulty, but in desire, since the equipment is developed by order, and not by spiritual desire .. an example of a BMPT - they put one 30 mm cannon, the warriors said that it was not enough, they put 2 guns in the end, although they shoot in turn, not together..

This missile can be used by the Ka-52 and Mi-28NM, and without a radical upgrade of the onboard equipment.

The standard and main armament of the Ka-52 and Mi-28 five years ago should have been Hermes-A (project Klevok D2), the "305" complex is nothing more than an expansion of the combat capabilities of army aviation helicopters when performing special tasks.

We need to develop something further, with elements of AI.
For example, first a pair of missiles with good optics and PD channels flies, they switch to a gliding / loitering mode, and on their guidance, a package of 6-8 cheaper guided missiles, equipped with good warheads for these types of targets, flies, after which the gunner missiles themselves finish off the necessary targets, but with a lower charge.
So that the cost-effectiveness was on top.
Because for the FSB, a different goal and 30 lyam will be inexpensive, but for the army, the economy is important.

Spike - ATGM with a light cumulative warhead, unlike.
Spike is a family of rockets, the heaviest Spike NLOS and has different warheads. LMUR 305 - length does not exceed 2 m, starting weight 105 kg. Spike NLOS - length 1,5 m, starting weight 75 kg. Little difference.

The land version of the Israeli is strange to the extreme. Especially on a Jeep chassis! There is no winch to load almost a centner TPK! Inclined guides. A huge window in a lightly armored hull where an Afghan teenager stoned to death with hashish will not miss. Ground is more drone killer than ATGM.
