South Korean aviation the industry continues to work on the promising fighter KF-21. Right now, preparations are underway for flight tests, which may begin in the very near future. In addition, the construction of several prototype aircraft continues, which over the next few years will join the tests and help to work out the design and determine its real characteristics.

First experienced

South Korea has been planning to create its own modern fighter since the early 2015s, but for a long time this idea remained at the level of theory and research. Only in XNUMX did Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) receive a real order to develop the KF-X fighter.

In September 2019, the customer and the developer approved the finished technical design, which made it possible to launch the construction of prototype aircraft. The assembly of this equipment is carried out at the KAI plant in Sacheon. There is also a flight test station, which will test equipment. It was reported that several fighters in different configurations would be built for ground and flight tests.

In April 2021, KAI Corporation held a presentation of the first prototype KF-X with serial number "001". At this stage, the project was assigned a new KF-21 index and the name Boramae ("Falcon"). In the near future, it was planned to pass it through all the necessary checks, and at the beginning of 2022 the first flight was expected. In addition, the construction of the next few prototypes continued.

However, the start of testing has shifted to the right. In June, it became known that KAI had begun partial disassembly and rebuilding of the fuselage of the first Falcon. The reason for this was some errors in the design of the airframe. Their nature and perceived risks were not specified.

Ground tests

To date, all identified shortcomings have been corrected, and preparations are underway for the first flight. So, in the last days of June, South Korean television showed a report from the KAI flight test station in Sacheon, where the first start-up of the prototype aircraft's engines took place. The power plant worked normally and confirmed all the characteristics.

Just a few days later, on July 2, a new phase of testing began. An experienced KF-21 was taken to the airfield for ground checks. The fighter moves independently along the taxiways. The first high-speed runs along the runway were also performed. Takeoff attempts have not yet been made.

According to the original plans, the first flight of the experienced Boramae was to take place in early 2022. At the end of June, it was reported that flight tests would begin this fall. However, according to the latest reports, the fighter could take to the air in the coming weeks, before the end of July. Some sources even give the exact date - July 22. Whether such reports correspond to reality will become clear in just a couple of weeks.

Aircraft for testing

In 2019, it became known that KAI would build a fairly large batch of aircraft for testing. For tests in the air, six machines of two main modifications are intended. Two more will be built for ground testing. Such plans have so far been only partially implemented, but the developer corporation still has a significant margin of time to complete the necessary work.

To date, two out of eight planned aircraft have left the assembly shop. The first last year was board "001" in its original configuration. Not so long ago, in May, a prototype with the number "004" was handed over to the flight test station. This is a combat training version of a fighter with a two-seat cockpit. At the moment, this aircraft is undergoing the necessary training, and within the next few months it may take off for the first time.

Earlier, various sources mentioned that there are several more experienced fighters in the KAI workshops at various stages of construction. The number of vehicles and the current stage of construction are unknown. At the same time, it cannot be ruled out that the final number of prototypes will differ from the planned one. Thus, successes or difficulties on different trials can lead to a reduction in their number.

Flight tests of one or two prototype KF-21s will begin in the coming months. Already next year, the first flights of the following aircraft are expected, and later the number of flight samples may increase again. According to current plans, flight tests of the entire experimental fleet will continue until 2025-26. and will allow you to work out all the features of the design, operation, combat use, etc. Naturally, some shifts are possible due to the novelty of the aircraft and other products.

Future rearmament

In the foreseeable future, in parallel with testing and fine-tuning of prototype equipment, KAI Corporation will begin preparing an assembly line for mass production. The assembly of the first batch of equipment is expected to be launched as early as 2026, almost simultaneously with the end of flight tests.

Fighter KF-21 is preparing for the first flight

The customer, represented by the Ministry of Defense of South Korea, wants to receive 140 new aircraft. At the same time, it is required that production quickly pick up high rates. So, by the end of 2028, it is planned to build and transfer to the air force up to 40 fighters - up to 15-20 aircraft per year. In 2029-32 the pace will rise to 25 aircraft annually, which will make it possible to build another hundred. Aircraft in combat and combat training configurations will go into production. At the same time, the number and shares of equipment of various modifications have not yet been reported. Probably, the two-seat fighter will be outnumbered by the basic version.

Plans for a more distant future have not yet been announced. Boramae may remain in the series or give way to a hypothetical next-generation fighter.

The KF-21 is being created for South Korea's own Air Force and according to their tactical and technical requirements. However, KAI plans to enter the international market. Materials for this project are already being demonstrated at South Korean and foreign air shows. They attract the attention of visitors, but so far nothing is known about possible buyers of the fighter. However, the situation may change in the near future - according to the results of the first flight and other tests.

Visible progress

In general, there is clear and visible progress in the project of the South Korean multifunctional fighter KAI KF-21. In just three to four years, KAI Corporation was able to develop a technical design, and it took about two more years to build the first prototype. Then it took a year to rebuild it and correct the identified deficiencies and prepare for testing.

The 001 aircraft is now taxiing and jogling, bringing it closer to its first takeoff. In addition, the second experimental "004" is expected to enter the airfield, and several more aircraft will follow. In the medium and long term, full-scale and comprehensive tests are to be carried out, which will take at least 3-4 years.

Thus, over the past few years, the South Korean aviation industry has shown the fundamental ability to develop a modern combat aircraft and build prototypes. Now she has to determine how successful such a project turned out and whether it meets the requirements of the customer.

In a few years, the problem of launching mass production in the interests of our own Air Force will become urgent. In addition, the search for foreign customers will begin. However, these stages of the new project are directly dependent on ongoing work. It will be possible to switch to a series, deliveries and sales only after successful tests. Whether the Sokol will cope with them will become known in a few years. In the meantime, the main goal is the first flight.

It’s interesting, why didn’t they start making a twin Su-57 in our country? .. Such a machine is still needed for retraining pilots .. Of course, simulators are cheaper and you can collect a dozen of them .. but flying with an instructor on a real car is a completely different calico ..

        1. General Electric F414 engines, which are installed on the Boeing F / A-18E / F Super Hornet, its General Electric F414-400K variant jointly developed by General Electric and Hanwha Aerospace for the South Korean KAI KF-X, which will be produced jointly and assembled locally in South Korea by Hanwha Aerospace.
        2. This fighter is jointly developed with Indonesia. Where Indonesia also acts as an investor.

This results in a 5th generation airframe, 5th generation avionics, 5th generation weapons and a 4+(+) generation engine.

Is it possible without generations? Double-circuit, with such and such a degree of bypass, with or without mixing flows, with or without an afterburner, with such and such thrust in different modes, with such and such a flow rate .... It has been used for 70 years, and patented 80 years ago .. laughing

Yes, junk car. If she had a chance to compete with the F-35, the Americans would not let him live beyond the drawing board. Look, the Swedes took everything into account in "Gripen". Lyalka was made. The EPR is small, there is only one engine, it can be based in the forest near the highway, the main thing is the meager costs of ground handling. According to the state , built - in control , fast replacement . Three loaders and a big-headed technician with a laptop .... It remains only to reduce the price by mass production - and here the "partners" came. Figushki to you, not a clearing F-35. All contracts are concluded, and then abruptly "change their mind".
And these Korean falcons have no prospects. Two foreign engines and a small series - the price will be prohibitive. There is a trend - we make planes, and then it's a pity to send them to war. As with a crystal service - in a sideboard and do not touch. And for fishing and in the woods with a soldier's aluminum mug.

Not this way. Grippen was originally made for themselves (because the Swedes cannot afford expensive cars) and for sale to the natives, to replace the F-5 and MiG-21. But the natives have seen enough video clips and want the 5th generation. And they can't afford the F-35. From the Russians for a long time to wait for something. The Chinese FC-31 is also unknown when it will go to the market. So why don't Koreans try it? At the very least, Indonesia has already gone crazy, and they have money. And where is Indonesia, there are the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and maybe the Papuans will shake the stash for one plane. And what kind of aircraft will turn out, we cannot yet judge. Time will tell. So far, the Korean aviation industry has not surprised anything, except for the training aircraft, and that’s not surprising)) They still have nowhere to send them to the war, except from the DPRK, but for those it’s not a pity am

They could not get into the internal suspension of weapons, which immediately minus cruising supersonic and stealth. so it doesn’t even stretch for the fifth generation. The same F-35 is capable of carrying weapons on an external sling, but this will only be done in case of air supremacy, when there will simply be no one to shine it with radars, because. enemy radar and air defense will be suppressed.

As part of the reduction in radar visibility, only internal ones are carried. F-22 flies with tanks over its territory, because. he is essentially afraid of no one; he plays the role of an air defense fighter. In the video and photo, the F-35 is mass-produced exclusively in a "clean" configuration without external suspensions.

Enough photo of the F-22 and F-35 with external suspension. For combat use, the F-22 was flown with external suspension. I don’t know about the combat use of the F-35. If only the Israelis flew. I remember that only the F-35 got hard from the Syrians (despite the invisibility). By the way, the radars of our fighters, as well as the radars of the air defense systems, perfectly detect and guide all these invisibles. Even without external hangers. Even with internal suspensions, when the weapons bays are opened, the EPR of the aircraft increases sharply

And if under the ATF program there were real flight samples from Lockheed and Northrop (the first one also carried out full work on launching missiles), as well as under the JSF program, what the Checkmate is is not yet clear, its characteristics are still calculated, but the paper is all endure. On the topic of PAK-FA, by the way, no demonstrators were rolled out either, there was the first prototype, which was a living, flying experimental board. So far it is clear that:
        1. According to the airframe, a lot of things are unified with the Su-57. The wing consoles are identical, the keels too, the bow with the cockpit, the engine (i.e. both the AL-41F and the notorious "izd-30" will fit there)
        2. Avionics and radar are most likely also taken from the Su-57.
        3. General aircraft systems, hydraulics, electrical system, landing gear are also taken from the Su-57 theme, naturally they will be finished for a single-engine layout and a different fuselage.

I also found in America the times when Hyundai cars were second in reputation from the end (the first from the end was firmly held by Yugo). Now their reputation, if inferior to the Japanese, is quite a bit, and greatly surpasses domestic ones. It's the same with electronics. Once upon a time, Samsung or Goldstar video recorders were bought out of lack of money, when there was not only enough for the Japanese, but even for domestic RCA or Zenith, and they broke shortly after the end of the warranty. Now RCA and Zenith have died quietly, and their brands have been bought cheaply by the Chinese, while Samsung and LG (former Goldstar) are very prestigious, and most importantly, reliable brands. So the Koreans (at least the southern ones), if they take up something, bring the matter to a result. What is called respect and respect. And they will also make a motor if there is enough funding, because such research / development work is, well, very expensive entertainment.

I agree that the engine is the heart of the aircraft and complex. But an airplane is not a glider shell, but the integration of different systems, and designing any completely new aircraft (if not copying according to the documentation) is not a trivial task, and takes years to complete. By the way, engines also need to be correctly integrated, there are enough examples of good engines on bad planes

Strange picture. It seems that the contours hint at stealth, and at the same time, the armament is all on an external sling, like the PTB, and judging by the size of the aircraft, there is no place for a payload inside, from the word "absolutely". So why plant a garden? All these stealth-bells and whistles do not improve the aerodynamics, and, to put it mildly, they do not reduce the cost, and the junk hanging from the outside will give a good light on the radar. However, I have never been an aeronautical engineer, so perhaps the specialists know better.

Well, I think this is just a presentation picture, which, by the way, usually has little to do with the actual characteristics of the final model. If they failed to place weapons in the inner compartment or they could not develop a flap mechanism that works on the SZ, or they could not use intra-fuselage ejection devices for the accident-free shooting of missiles from the inner compartment, then this whole game of stealth exterior is really just a window dressing. For the plebs. But it does not exclude that in the future the internal compartment will appear. On the S-70, at first, it was also not on the first samples.

So, it's simple. There is elementary marketing. Those who can buy this (and these are politicians in developing countries, hardly competent in technical matters) may want the "5th generation". And they have previously seen photo-videos of all sorts of "fifth generations", and may want something visually similar. By the way, "stealth contours" do not necessarily mean the real invisibility of the car. There are a lot of subtleties here. And even a stealth machine, with certain parameters of the irradiating wave, can give a sharp jump in reflection

South Korea is unlikely to get rid of US bases in the near future, which means there will be no problems with the purchase of engines. In the meantime, the production line will be established, their own design bureaus will develop their own engine. For them, it is more important to release a finished product as soon as possible, and then the engines can be caught up. And it is just as unlikely that South Korea will be forcibly isolated and cut off from technology.

Why not? The US and the ROK are strategic allies, and stronger friends in NATO. It is very difficult to imagine that the United States will block the supply of engines to the ROK, except perhaps if the Red Flag is raised over Seoul and Kim rises. However, in this case, this aircraft will die due to issues beyond the control of the engine. Because no one has 100% of their own. And parallel imports in complex military equipment are very difficult to roll.

Moreover, the current authorities (who came here a couple of months ago) are in favor of an even greater expansion of relations with the United States and other allies.

The position of the military-industrial complex of Korea is strong and adapted for theater equipment with export potential. This position allowed Korea, from an insignificant country in the top 3 exporters of small items, to begin to fight for the top 10, with the prospect of top 5 by the year 30.

There is such an assumption. There capitalism, obtaining the maximum profit at the minimum cost. Also, the population is very obedient and law-abiding. When they hire a worker, they hire a specialist in a certain field, who, in mind, will do his job as he was taught, according to instructions, without amateur performance. No one will hammer screws with a hammer and tighten nails with a screwdriver, this is a violation of the rules and in the future you can burn out due to a bad product. In addition to the obligations specified in the contract, no one will force them to do it, since this is a violation of the contract, which is unthinkable for them. I read the memoirs of a Russian Gaster. He was asked to do one job that he did not know how to do, but then the Korean site foreman, seeing that he was not doing well, immediately returned our hard worker to his old place of work, where he did a better job. That is, everyone is doing their own thing. In Russia, according to their own experience, they are trying to save money and hang everything they can on the employee without training. And effective managers save on specialists. Here, as a result of the work of a layman, buckets with nuts are obtained.

F-16 and F / A-18 do not have internal cargo compartments, they have a larger RCS. The A-10 is generally an aircraft of the "BRRRttt" battlefield and is built around a cannon. They have their own aircraft for a specific task. F-35 - a typical sawmill, feeder for the American military-industrial complex. In all respects, except for the notorious invisibility, the F-35 is inferior to its "ancestors". And the cost is several times higher than them. Unlike the same F-16/18, it cannot conduct air combat. Unsuitable as an attack aircraft. Suitable only for colonial wars. In the event of a war against an opponent with serious air defense (and such are the most likely now), they will live much less than their "ancestors". And invisibility won't help. As for mass, I'm not sure. Now they are starting to tighten their belts, and is there any point in switching to a "golden" toy when there are proven and reliable workhorses? It seems to me that there will simply be no money for new F-35s

Not inferior. In terms of cost, serial boards are no more expensive than the Bobing Superhornets. It can conduct air combat, maneuverability at the level of the Superhornet, which the Americans have recently been extremely willing to demonstrate after they removed the restrictions on the available overload.
Will live the same or a little longer due to the fact that "stealth". An airplane is like an airplane. You mixed up with the F-22, the F-35 is not the most expensive aircraft, the opponents increased in price, but did not add in performance, the same Rafal is already comparable in price, however, like our Su-35. Only the first series had a high price, and when production reached design levels and Congress growled at the Lockmarts, demanding to "cut the sturgeon", prices suddenly fell without harming the aircraft. The Israelis fly out and are happy.

                  Not inferior.

Googled a little. In terms of cost, the information is rather contradictory, as far as I understand, it varies greatly depending on the series, configuration (there is for the US Air Force, but there are also export ones). Karoch, superhornet about 57-60 green lyams. F-35 - as many as 83-108 green lyams. But the little F-16 - only 34 green lames. Although I'm not sure about the numbers - firstly, there are many who want to "saw", both among sellers and among buyers. But, obviously, a much later, technically and technologically complex pepelats should also cost more. Do not forget that there is also a lot of stuff in its development and fine-tuning - and this must be beaten off. Therefore, I tend to believe that he is significantly more expensive than his ancestors. About maneuverability. Although the F-35 has a very good engine, it is not "with a vector", there is only one engine; plus, for the sake of this very invisibility, they sacrificed aerodynamics (and I don’t confuse it with the F-117))) It’s not difficult to demonstrate the “maneuverability” of an empty aircraft with a minimum of fuel and without suspensions, there’s an empty MS-21 in general, vertically gaining height and making a turn on a hill . Why not a fighter? laughing They have repeatedly compared the F-35 with 4th generation fighters - and each time they came to the conclusion that he could not win in an air battle. There is no chance. Just leave. As for the pleasure of the Israelis, I can’t judge - they cherish their new items. They are not particularly seen in battles. But it seems that the far from new Syrian air defense system once took the F-35 very seriously, it barely returned, and invisibility did not help. And how much will this invisibility help against modern ground and airborne radars with PAR / AFAR? Yes, I remember how the ams themselves scolded the F-35 and called it the biggest mistake of the am. aviation industry

Let's figure it out, since we googled it. The price for the F-35A is just the same 80-83 (from where 83) million, as for the most massive and simplest option, it is the basis of export deliveries. The F-35B is an extremely niche and most expensive car, which is why the price is 100k, it is needed exclusively by the USMC for the UDC, the British (there is no alternative replacement for the Harrier) and the Yaps with their non-aircraft carriers. The F-35C is generally an apparatus in itself, because the customer is there exclusively for the US Navy, the requirements for the F-18 are there, which is why there is a different wing, a larger span, a different stabilizer (also enlarged), even the tail section of the fuselage is 35 cm (approximately) longer , longer nozzle, even the keels are somewhat different. The export potential of "C" is close to zero, it is the "workhorse" of the US Navy, and it will probably supplant the SuperHornet if the Bobing lobby cannot push through Congress. Therefore, the conclusion is: the F-35A, that is, the successor to the F-16C, and live in NATE for everyone who now operates Vipers, even Australia ordered to replace the Hornets.
His only victim of aerodynamics is a fat midsection (the tongued airfield people have already stuck a nickname to the plane: "Fat Aimee"), but how else to stick two cargo compartments, a healthy engine (and the F-135 is a really big engine), a fan for "B" -versions? The fuselage is one, albeit with differences.
As for the Syrian air defense systems: do not read propaganda in the morning. Downed or not? if not shot down, then everything is OK, if shot down, then where is the official communiqué of the Israeli Defense Ministry about the losses? You can’t be a little shot down by a modern air defense system, especially on a single-engine aircraft.
the Americans did not scold the plane, but the program. They, like us, are used to the fact that a military commissar can be classified to death, but here the program is open and every hipster with an iPad tells Lockheed: how to build an airplane, and the military how to fly it. One Dr. Kopp is worth something from Australia, who wanted his government to buy the F-22 so much that he screwed up a generally good F-35 aircraft. Once again, for understanding: the F-35 is like that, because the requirements for the JSF program were put forward by the military and the air combat in them was in tenth roles, the basis was the strike functions. The military, having flown the F-16, which in the end became exclusively a fighter-bomber, having operated the F-117, realized what they needed and got what they wanted.

PS And compare the export price of the Su-35, from the information that our Defense Ministry has not yet transferred to the category of state secrets. According to aviation magazines, there is a figure of $ 80 million.

It's hard for me to judge prices - I can only find them on the Internet, but they vary greatly in different sources. The price of export dryers can vary greatly - it depends on the configuration (including Western equipment). In general, the question of choosing foreign technology is always political, and even corrupt. For example, when all the F-14s were written off in the USA and regretted it, there were votes for the purchase of the Su-27 from Russia and retrofitting according to American standards (with the replacement of engines with American ones). Obviously, this simply could not be. It is known that purchases by Indians almost always have a corruption component. The same "component" played a role in the purchase of the F-104 for NATO. The F-35 is not scolded by bloggers and couch analysts (whom they are interested in), but by the very American military, including pilots. I didn’t hear anyone express their enthusiasm by switching to the F-35 from the same F-16s. About "shot down / not shot down." The aircraft may not be shot down, and even make it to its airfield, but receive such damage that it will be in repair for a long time, or even be written off. This is also very important. In an air battle over Angola, a MiG-23 hit a South African Mirage with a missile. The Mirage was not shot down, and even reached its airfield. But the plane was so damaged that it was wrecked during landing, and the pilot was injured, from which he died in the hospital. Looks like it wasn't hit...

Korea will certainly want to develop its own engines, but this is unlikely to happen in the distant future. They also had problems producing engines and gearboxes strong enough for K2 tanks and had to use a German gearbox

Even the Chinese cannot (and they at least produce copies of our engines), what can we say about Korean without engine experience

    Why read then?
The last thing I liked: Timokhin wrote, but the style is very specific. It's hard to get into the subject. request

Alexander writes mainly on the topics of the fleet. But completely under the influence of Maxim, therefore tendentiously critical material is obtained. It is difficult to read, it is even more difficult to agree, because a bright perspective is not given, which nevertheless exists.
And so, you are right. Impoverished, alas, the field of thought ...

Very similar to the F-22. Although flat nozzles were abandoned. And the wing is very different

Do Koreans steal? And the military-industrial complex in all countries greatly overestimates the cost of its products. But it is unlikely that anyone here will surpass the Americans. Each B-2 costs astronomical money (something around 2-3 billion) and no Korea will catch up

From the whole article I understood only KF-21. For the rest, as always, Ryabov Kirill: want, plan, maybe, maybe. What (whose) engines, what (whose) electronics? Uncle Sam allowed his planes to be built without buying an F-35?
