Group of “moderates” and group of “wars”: Western messages for Ukraine
The West is trying to comprehend the situation in Ukraine and let it go according to the most favorable scenario for itself. But the West is not homogeneous in this respect. It is one thing - a profitable scenario for the US and Britain, quite another - for the European Union. Moreover, the EU itself is not homogeneous either. Some countries (and these are primarily the Russophobic pro-American authorities in Poland and the Baltic states) are in favor of a tough confrontation with Moscow, others (the countries of the so-called “old Europe”) are in favor of a pragmatic line and the search for a compromise solution.
Moreover, many are not so much for the sake of peace in Ukraine, but because they themselves bear enormous costs.
As soon as the “moderate” Macron, Scholz and Draghi decided to arrive in Kyiv, who not only brought news of the possibility of granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership, but called on Zelensky to return to negotiations, Johnson immediately began to gather in the Ukrainian capital. Moreover, he wanted to visit the Kiev region once again, not at all because he “yearned” for the Dnieper steeps, but to clarify with Zelensky whether he, by chance, had agreed to the calls of the leaders of the EU countries.
Johnson's arrival made it clear that London does not accept any steps back from Zelensky. He must fight to the last Ukrainian, even if for this he has to “scoop out” all citizens capable of holding a machine gun (or holding on to it) up to the age of retirement.
So it turns out that for some, the option of negotiations is acceptable, for others - only a war with Russia by Ukrainian hands.
Reflections on the foreign position are presented by Alexei Pushkov in his author's program on TVC:
