The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense denied the reports of the Polish press about the transfer of Su-25 attack aircraft to Ukraine
Bulgaria did not transfer Su-25 attack aircraft to Ukraine from the presence of its own Air Force, all aircraft are in places of permanent deployment. This is reported by the Bulgarian press with reference to the statement of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic.
Sofia denied a number of publications in the Polish press that the Ukrainian Air Force was replenished with Su-25 attack aircraft transferred by the Bulgarian Air Force as military assistance after Kyiv almost lost combat aviation. As the Polish media wrote, Ukraine allegedly received 14 disassembled Su-25s, which coincides with the number of attack aircraft in service with the Bulgarian Air Force. However, the Bulgarian military department states that all Su-25s are in permanent locations and have not been handed over to anyone.
As already reported, the Bulgarian Air Force is armed with 14 Su-25 attack aircraft, eight of them (six Su-25K and two Su-25UB) were modernized in Belarus at the 558th aircraft repair plant in Baranovichi in the period from 2019 to 2021. To send planes to Belarus, Bulgaria even circumvented Brussels' ban on arms supplies to Minsk. The deputies adopted an amendment to the law on control over the export of military products, removing the control of the Ministry of Economy over the repair and modernization of weapons and giving it to the Ministry of Defense, after which they recognized the import of attack aircraft to Belarus not as an export, but as a temporary import for the purpose of repair.
On May 25, 2022, there were reports that Ukraine received a large batch of Su-25 attack aircraft from the air forces of the countries of the former Warsaw Pact. A number of Polish media, as well as oppositional Belarusian ones, wrote that the planes were allegedly transferred by Bulgaria and Slovakia. In total, 14 Su-25s were handed over to Kyiv, which were dismantled in Poland and delivered to Ukraine under the guise of "spare parts" for aviation, which suggests that there are no deliveries of combat aircraft.
