A North Korean soldier shot two of his commanders, crossed the border and went over to the side of South Korea. The incident was reported by the official representative of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea.
The soldier crossed the military-demarcation line in the western sector of the demilitarized zone of the DMZ separating the two Koreas in 12: 10 in local time and four minutes later went into the South Korean border post. At that moment he was without weapons. Shortly before this, the South Korean patrol heard six shots, ITAR-TASS reports.
Before the detention, the servicemen used a loudspeaker to make sure that the defector was going to go to the South, and then brought him to the location of the unit.
During interrogation by the investigators, a North Korean soldier, whose military rank was not disclosed, confirmed that he had shot down the commanders of his platoon and company before escaping. Now military counterintelligence and representatives of the National Intelligence Service of the Republic of Kazakhstan are investigating all the circumstances of the escape.
South Korean border guards also confirmed that the DPRK military brought two bodies to their guard post. Posts northerners and southerners share the entire 500 meters.
After this state of emergency, the South Korean side intensified its observation of the situation, however, nothing unusual was observed on the northern side of the border.
The escape through the DMZ, which is one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world, is happening, according to the KNS representative, "extremely rarely." The last time a deserted DPRK soldier crossed the inter-Korean border in its eastern sector was in March 2010.
