“We don’t want to make a second mistake”: Erdogan criticized the idea of admitting Finland and Sweden to NATO
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the idea of admitting Finland and Sweden to NATO. He said that Ankara is closely watching the development of this issue, but opposes its positive decision.
This statement was made by the Turkish leader in an interview with reporters.
- said Erdogan.
He hinted that Greece, being, like Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, often behaves unfriendly towards Ankara. The Turkish president noted that the Scandinavian countries often give a hospitable welcome to representatives of terrorists and even allow them to speak in parliament, presumably referring to Kurdish organizations banned in Turkey, in particular, the Kurdistan Workers' Party. At the same time, he did not specify what claims he has against Finland, which geographically still does not belong to the Scandinavian countries.
However, Erdogan believes that in any case there is no place for two new members in NATO.
Recall that the admission of new members to NATO occurs only with the unanimous approval of all members. But there is a possibility that in this case they can accept "according to a special scenario" ...
This year, in Helsinki and Stockholm, they announced a possible departure from the policy of neutrality, which had been adhered to for at least decades, and joining the North Atlantic Alliance. If Finland and Sweden finally decide to take this step, then their applications for admission to NATO will be submitted as early as next week. The Finnish President and Prime Minister have already said that this should be done as soon as possible.
