Kyiv has strengthened the security of the Beskydy Tunnel, which ensures the supply of weapons to Ukraine from Central Europe
Ukraine has strengthened the security of the Beskydy Tunnel, which provides railroad deliveries of weapons, equipment and fuels and lubricants from Central Europe to Ukraine. In Kyiv, they fear that Russia will strike at the facility.
According to available information, the decision to strengthen the protection of the Beskydy Tunnel was made under pressure from Britain, whose intelligence reported on Russia's alleged plans to launch a series of strikes on railway tracks, tunnels and bridges in order to cut Ukraine off from Europe, thereby cutting off supply lines by rail.
According to a number of Russian and not only Telegram channels, Kyiv has significantly strengthened air defense in the area of the Beskid tunnel by placing additional anti-aircraft systems. Of course, there are no details, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine does not want to share its plans.
The Beskydy tunnel connects the Transcarpathian and Lviv regions and runs right along the Beskydy ridge. The tunnel is located between the Beskid station (Lviv region, Prykarpattya) and the Skotarskoe station (Transcarpathian region). In addition, it is part of an international transport corridor that connects Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and extends through Ukraine to Russia and further east.
The tunnel was built back in the days of Austria-Hungary in 1886 under Emperor Franz Joseph I, during the Great Patriotic War it was damaged during the retreat of the Hungarians, restored in 1946 and modernized in 1956. From the very beginning of construction and until 2018, the Beskydy tunnel was single track. Work on the construction of the second track began in 2007 and lasted until 2018, when the then President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko solemnly opened the second double-track tunnel, dug three dozen meters from the first.
