Turkey has ruled out the passage through the Black Sea straits to the Black Sea waters of warships of any countries, including NATO. As stated in the Ministry of Defense of the country, Ankara will firmly adhere to the Montreux Convention.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar ruled out the passage of warships of any countries to the Black Sea while the Russian special operation in Ukraine continues. According to him, Turkey is firmly committed to the implementation of the Montreux Convention, so the straits are closed.
In addition, the Turkish minister drew attention to the appearance of drifting sea mines in the Black Sea and did not rule out that this was done with the intent to put pressure on Ankara in order to allow minesweepers and other warships of NATO countries to enter the Black Sea, allegedly to search for and destroy mines. However, Turkey will cope on its own, the investigation into where these mines came from is already underway.
(...) We have a suspicion about the deliberate appearance of mines. Perhaps they were released as part of some plan to put pressure on us in order to let NATO minesweepers into the Black Sea. But we are committed to the rules of Montreux and will not let warships into the Black Sea, just as we will not allow the Black Sea to be drawn into the war
- said Akar.
Earlier, Turkey closed the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles for the passage of warships of Russia and Ukraine, while the ban does not apply to warships returning to their naval bases located in the Black Sea. Then the Turks completely closed the straits for any warships of non-Black Sea states, using the Montreux Convention.
