Turkey has ruled out the passage of NATO warships through the straits to the Black Sea

Turkey has ruled out the passage through the Black Sea straits to the Black Sea waters of warships of any countries, including NATO. As stated in the Ministry of Defense of the country, Ankara will firmly adhere to the Montreux Convention.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar ruled out the passage of warships of any countries to the Black Sea while the Russian special operation in Ukraine continues. According to him, Turkey is firmly committed to the implementation of the Montreux Convention, so the straits are closed.

In addition, the Turkish minister drew attention to the appearance of drifting sea mines in the Black Sea and did not rule out that this was done with the intent to put pressure on Ankara in order to allow minesweepers and other warships of NATO countries to enter the Black Sea, allegedly to search for and destroy mines. However, Turkey will cope on its own, the investigation into where these mines came from is already underway.

(...) We have a suspicion about the deliberate appearance of mines. Perhaps they were released as part of some plan to put pressure on us in order to let NATO minesweepers into the Black Sea. But we are committed to the rules of Montreux and will not let warships into the Black Sea, just as we will not allow the Black Sea to be drawn into the war

- said Akar.

Earlier, Turkey closed the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles for the passage of warships of Russia and Ukraine, while the ban does not apply to warships returning to their naval bases located in the Black Sea. Then the Turks completely closed the straits for any warships of non-Black Sea states, using the Montreux Convention.

NATO warships in the Black Sea can provoke the start of a NUCLEAR WAR.
Where it will be bad for everyone.
          But Erdogan continues to amaze.
He really doesn't seem to care about US opinion when it comes to the good of Turkey.
The opinion of Russia, however, does not give a damn in this case either, but at least you can deal with it. His position is understandable and adequate.
And he has not yet been noticed in a hasty change in his position.
          Worthy of respect.

it is for the good of Turkey.

No one needs a big war...
And the special operation must be brought to an end!

Your right to think so. There was no impulse to enter the Black Sea from NATO. And at the expense of compliance with agreements, agreements and conventions, I can say that almost everything was violated! Azerbaijan in March began to test the soil in Nagorno-Karabakh, and I am sure, not without the approval of Turkey. Time will put everything in its place!

The Montreux Convention (1936 Swiss city) preserves the freedom of passage through the straits for merchant ships of all countries both in peacetime and in wartime. However, the convention establishes a different regime for the passage of warships for the fleets of the Black Sea and non-Black Sea states. Subject to prior notice to the Turkish authorities, the Black Sea states may pass their warships of any class through the straits in peacetime. Significant restrictions on class (only small surface ships pass) and on tonnage have been introduced for warships of non-Black Sea powers. The total tonnage of warships of non-Black Sea states in the Black Sea should not exceed 30 thousand tons (with the possibility of increasing this maximum to 45 thousand tons in the event of an increase in the naval forces of the Black Sea countries) with a stay of no more than 21 days. In the event of Turkey's participation in the war, and also if Turkey considers that it is directly threatened by war, it has the right to allow or prohibit the passage through the straits of any warships. The convention consists of 29 articles, four annexes and one protocol. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreux_Convention_on_the_status_of_the_straits

It is clear that the Turks in this situation are acting to the maximum exclusively in their own interests. To consider Turkey as an ally of Russia is to fall into an illusion, which is very dangerous.

Normal position if you think about your country. But the fact that Turkey is a NATO country, but does not allow NATO ships, is worth a lot.

Well, firstly: it is up to the Turkish government to decide, and secondly: Russia, as a subject against which NATO was created, is much more profitable if Nata has just such a member who decides for himself when to stand up ... to protect the interests of the West. Well, thirdly, and secondly enough.

And why should the Turks act NOT in their own interests? They do everything right. Russia and Turkey are not allies both officially and unofficially, what kind of illusion are you talking about?

It is easy for Turkey to say this, since NATO itself refused to enter the Black Sea. He does not want to take risks, when entering the Black Sea, NATO ships immediately fall under the sight of our coastal missile systems.

Still, I wonder if Erdogan decided this himself or who suggested it?
In any case, Russia definitely does not need NATO ships in the Black Sea, so now he is pouring water on our mill.

Ours were not allowed through the straits, but NATO is also not allowed.

Turkey vows to keep warships out of the Black Sea
... Article 19 of the international treaty implies that during hostilities warships of the belligerents cannot pass through the straits (provided that Turkey is not a party to the conflict). The head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Ankara will strictly comply with it. In accordance with this decision, Turkey refused to let Russian warships through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles on March 2.

It is beneficial for the Turks now. And just in case, keep the exit from the Bosphorus to the Black Sea by submarines.
