April 7 - Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Submariners
Today, April 7, is a special date in the calendar of memorable dates in Russia. It is dedicated to the memory of submariners who died while performing tasks, including combat ones. The Day of Remembrance of the dead submariners was designated on the calendar on the basis of the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy in December 1995.
April 7 was not chosen by chance as such a date. It was on this day 33 years ago - April 7, 1989 - that the death of the Soviet nuclear submarine Komsomolets took place. This is the only submarine of Project 685 Fin. In 1985, the nuclear submarine "Komsomolets" set an absolute record for the depth of immersion among submarines for the entire history. The depth exceeded 1 km.
According to the official version, the death of the Komsomolets submarine, which was part of the 6th Division 1 flotilla SF of the USSR Navy, occurred as a result of a fire that broke out in two compartments. The flames eventually led to problems with the main ballast tanks. And the submarine began to fill with sea water. At that moment, Komsomolets was in the Norwegian Sea at a depth of about 380 m.
Data regarding the cause of the fire vary to this day. There has been speculation both about the negligence of the crew members and about "technical problems" that led to the fire.
On April 7, Russia remembers all the dead submariners, including the crew of the Kursk APRK, which sank in the summer of 2000. The cause of that catastrophe is also more than vague, despite the work of numerous commissions, investigation teams and other bodies and departments. I would like to express the hope that in the near future the true cause of the disaster with the Kursk submarine will be announced at the highest level.
Eternal memory to the dead sailors-submariners.
