The main tank T-72B3 - on its basis the family of RTK "Shturm" is being built

The Russian industry continues work on the promising heavy robotic complex Shturm. The construction of the first prototype of several planned ones is being completed, and in the coming weeks it will be able to enter the factory tests. In the future, we should expect the appearance of three similar armored vehicles with different equipment, and in the long term, all new models will be able to enter service.

On development stage

The first reports of a heavy class RTK with the Sturm code appeared in the domestic press in August 2018. It was reported that the project was being created at the Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Company and provided for the development of four robotic combat vehicles. They will be built on a common tank chassis and will receive different weapons to solve different combat missions.

At the time these News The project has passed its first stages. By that time, a model with combat equipment had been made, designed to work out movement issues. The technical details of the project were not given. At the same time, it was reported that "Shturm" is intended for operations in urban environments and will help to carry out combat missions without risks to personnel.

New information about the promising project appeared a year later, in August 2019. Then Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited Uralvagonzavod and got acquainted with the results of the corporation's activities. Among other things, he was shown developments in the heavy class RTK based on the main tank T-72B3. It was reported that this project provides for the creation of several unmanned combat vehicles with different equipment and capabilities. Apparently, it was about the project "Storm", although this cipher was not called.

T-72B3 firing

In December of the same year, new information about promising RTKs was announced by the commander of the ground forces, Army General Oleg Salyukov. He said that RTK "Shturm" is at the stage of development work. Its goal is to create new robotic complexes and a control system that ensures their joint work on the battlefield.

Test preparation

At the end of May last year, the media reported on the start of construction of experimental equipment from the Shturm complex. NPK Uralvagonzavod is building several prototypes of robotic combat vehicles, as well as a mobile control center. All equipment of new models is carried out on the standard chassis of the T-72B3 tank. The planned composition of the family of equipment, the features of its individual representatives, etc. were also given.

At the end of August, the first contract for the supply of Shturm complexes was signed at the Army-2021 forum. The details of the agreement were not specified. Probably, it was about prototypes already under construction, intended for testing.

On March 14, RIA Novosti, citing a source in the military-industrial complex, announced the imminent transition of the Shturm project to a new stage. Already in April, NPK UVZ will begin preliminary tests of the first prototype, which is a robotic version of the T-72B3. It is planned to carry out various checks, incl. to test a weapon system with a 125-mm gun.

BMPT in combat unit. The corresponding version of "Sturm" will be similar

The timing and completion of preliminary tests of the first prototype is not specified. It is also not reported when the next experimental RTKs with a different weapon configuration will appear and go to the training ground.

Robotic family

The exact appearance of the promising RTKs of the Shturm line has not yet been disclosed. Experimental or mock-up samples of such equipment were not openly demonstrated. However, the general features and goals of the project have already been published in the press. As reported, at the moment we are talking about the creation of four combat vehicles with different weapons and a unified command and control armored vehicle.

All samples of the new family are built on the T-72B3 MBT chassis. The main units of the hull, power plant and chassis are preserved. Declared the preservation of a high level of protection against all threats, incl. from the upper hemisphere. It is possible that the armor and attachments of serial tanks will be preserved.

The control compartment and the fighting compartment of the base tank must be rebuilt taking into account robotization and using new units. The degree of automation of the "Sturm" is not clear - they can save crew seats or be completely autonomous. At the same time, it is obvious that the mobile control center will necessarily be habitable.

Fighter with RPO-A flamethrower

First of all, on a unified robotic chassis, it is proposed to build a tank adapted to work in urban areas. Its main armament is a shortened 125 mm caliber gun. It is expected that in terms of characteristics it will be close to serial 2A46 guns, and the shorter barrel length will improve the tank's maneuverability in urban areas.

The second in the Shturm family will be an RTK with fire support functions. He will receive a combat module equipped with RPO-A Shmel jet flamethrowers. Such a complex will be able to hit manpower, light equipment and some buildings.

Two more projects provide for the creation of functional analogues of existing equipment. So, the third version of the "Shturm" will be similar to the tank support / fire support combat vehicle "Terminator". She will receive two 30-mm guns and other barreled weapons. Instead of anti-tank missiles, RPO-A flamethrowers or similar means will be used. The family will also include a self-propelled combat vehicle with a 220-mm rocket launcher. In terms of its functions, it will repeat the TOS-1A flamethrower system.

Robots in combat

The Sturm project provides for the creation of several robotic combat vehicles. They will have a high degree of commonality with each other and with existing crew-driven vehicles. In addition, similar weapons will be used, giving the same or similar combat capabilities. Such an approach to the creation of RTCs can provide significant advantages.

TOS-1A flamethrower system, the predecessor of one of the Shturm RTK vehicles

First of all, RTCs are created in order to reduce risks for personnel. Robots without a crew, they will be able to fully work at the forefront, solving all the assigned tasks. At the same time, the defeat of the combat vehicle does not threaten its operators in any way - they must be located in a protected control center outside the danger zone.

Of great interest is the chosen approach to the composition of weapons. Products "Sturm" arms and functions will repeat the existing armored vehicles - tanks, BMPTs, etc. This will give robotic units the same combat and fire capabilities as armored units on conventional vehicles. As a result, new RTKs will be able to interact with other armored vehicles or fully replace them, depending on the current situation.

Unlike conventional equipment, the promising Sturm products are initially adapted to work in urban environments. First of all, the protection against attacks from all angles is strengthened. Also, taking into account the specifics of the city, weapons are being finalized. So, the robotic tank gets a shortened cannon, and the new Terminator variant will use flamethrowers instead of missiles. All this will give certain advantages when working in the expected conditions.

As part of the Shturm project, new control systems with all the necessary functions are being developed. They will provide remote and autonomous control of equipment. The possibility of autonomous group application is also mentioned. In this case, the RTK will be able to work with entire subdivisions of the required composition with minimal control and participation of the operator.

Serial combat RTK "Uran-9"

It is obvious that the control systems for the Sturm will be further developed. New more advanced software and hardware components will be introduced, which will increase the autonomy and efficiency of solving all problems. Perhaps in the end it will be possible to reduce the participation of the operator to a minimum; he will only have to monitor the work of equipment or even entire units and approve the use of weapons.

The project RTK "Shturm" has long-term consequences. As part of this R&D, new technologies and components are being created, and the necessary experience is being gained in a promising area. In the future, all solutions and developments can be used in the following projects of military and auxiliary equipment for the army.

On the eve of the check

In recent years, the Russian Ministry of Defense has paid great attention to the creation and development of robotic systems for the army, incl. intended for use in combat. Some samples of this kind have already been tested, entered the series and are being introduced into the troops. Also, promising equipment was tested in a real military operation.

Since the middle of the last decade, active work has been going on in the direction of combat RTKs of heavy classes, capable of replacing tanks and other equipment. Several similar samples have already been developed, and a new one will be released for testing in the coming weeks. How soon the tests of the experimental Sturm tank and all subsequent vehicles of the family will be completed is unknown. However, it is already clear that this project has the greatest prospects and should be brought to the desired final.

Kirill, give a link where it is indicated that the basis of the Shturm robot will be exactly the T72B3, and not just the T72? They wanted to use the first versions of the T72 as a tank-robot, so as not to write them off and send them for remelting!

Then they will become a prime target... armored vehicles on the battlefield should not be determined. Remember how the Germans easily distinguished command tanks. And the Americans quickly stopped attacking with different Shermans, with different guns ... the Germans first of all knocked out tanks with long-barreled guns.

And I think it will be difficult to knock them out, Afghanit will cover the tank well enough, and the Sturm will not be silent. But the robot will not replace the human eye and orientation on the ground for a long time. hi

You will see little from tanks (even from Armata). Here, hovering at a safe height, the quadcopter is much more efficient.

Logically, specialized reconnaissance equipment is an order of magnitude more effective than observation from a tank. And with today's implementation of the concept of network-centric interaction, there are simply no other alternatives.

Again, reality takes its toll. From a quadcopter, you can see the enemy, but only from a tank sight can you see the possibility of hitting him with direct fire due to the terrain.

Or maybe her tank gun? We put a gun from NONA \ Vienna and, according to target designation from an UAV, destroy the enemy along a hinged trajectory? It’s business to shove a gun into a strong tank turret and tie it into an UAV ... And in the dreams of an infantryman, at least one of the squads has the opportunity to give target designation like an UAV .. but this is generally anril ..

If the target is close, you can fire an ATGM at it, again from the tank gun. It's up to the development of a missile controlled from a drone or self-guided. And if the target is far away, then why do you need an unmanned tank at all? Then traditional artillery comes into play, with guided projectiles and multiple rocket launchers.

Uh .. We are talking about different things .. For example, we have a 9-story building in front of us, and behind it is a tank \ MLRS \ self-propelled guns or another target, and how do you destroy it from a tank gun? you need to get around the obstacle, go for direct fire and hit the target of the OFS or ATGM does not matter, but you still have to expose yourself to the enemy’s return fire, and the range of response can be very diverse. During the fighting in Grozny, NONA quite successfully threw the 9th floor, hitting targets behind it .. Today, the only question is for the SLA, which will be able to work on target designation of third-party gunners .. They gave the coordinates of the target of the SLA, they worked out by comparing their own.. Here is such an opener should be obtained for fighting in the city.

A special assault tank is a completely different topic. There were reports in the press that they would start developing 152-mm self-propelled guns on the "Armata" chassis. On this base, or any other, and it is necessary to take into account the specifics of urban battles. To refuse a tank gun is somehow strange.

And if our generals are sawing this pepelats for battle ala Prokhorovka, then this is already a complete clinic, because for it there are a ton of other means that are available .. can at least once do what is really needed?

As always, military operations move forward both science and technology. New experience gives rise to new tasks for KB and a new look at tactics. According to the results of WWII, armored forces separated into separate areas, and now the time is apparently coming for uninhabited, remotely piloted, semi-automatic and air and ground combat systems.

Allows you to reduce costs, since the basis already exists. We also need vehicles smaller than the T-72, but larger than the Uran-9, so that a 57-mm cannon can be placed, the use of which is especially effective in the city, according to the experience of fighting in Hungary, in Syria.

    I agree with you.
It is most difficult to replace an experienced driver with cameras. He "fifth point" feels the car, hears the engine ...

But with the commander and gunner it is easier. The view from the tank is already not very good, so the panoramic sight and cameras from all sides, and even with elements of artificial intelligence, will not be much worse even in the case of remote control, and sometimes even better. And functions such as turning the tower to the irradiating laser with a subsequent shot, shooting smoke grenades - they already exist, this is a matter of sensors and software.

Why make an unmanned tank? Something similar to Uranus-9 and more compact and cheaper.
Detected targets can be hit by infantry fighting vehicles coming behind, and even more distant battalion mortars and brigade 152mm artillery.
The means of destruction in a modern motorized rifle brigade of the RF Armed Forces is already behind our eyes. It is necessary to speed up the transmission of the coordinates of identified targets, ideally live.

In terms of its functions, it will repeat the TOS-1A flamethrower system.

Someone, take away from Uralvagonzavod the issues of armament of the platform. Otherwise, we will again get the "Terminator", which no one needs to hell with.
Immediately question. How will a shortened gun fire with regular ammunition of the T-72 tank? Has anyone experienced such a gun? There is a scientific and technical justification: how much to shorten the gun, how will this affect ballistics? Or will they just saw off a piece at Uralvagon and "yeah"? As far as I understand, the gun and projectile are a single complex, the powder charge is calculated for a certain volume of the bore. What happens if you shorten it?

A car with Bumblebees is generally some kind of fierce trash. Look at the photo of the BMPT in the topic. Even at the training ground, missile weapons are removed from them. This is because it is quite possible to damage an ATGM even during a march, and it is dangerous to use a damaged ATGM, this is not a firecracker. That is why the developers of the Chrysanthemum removed the ammunition rack inside the vehicle and created a complex loading mechanism. Although nothing prevented them from hanging rockets in clusters over the armor.
Now imagine a tank littered with clusters of disposable flamethrowers in combat. One turn from the "jihad-mobile" and the use of flamethrowers becomes dangerous for the vehicle itself. Damaged ammunition can explode at the moment of launch, and even worse, fly along a random trajectory in its own.
If the creators of the machine really want to arm it with OD-ammunition, then you need to make an automatic flamethrower, with Bumblebee ammunition. So that the ammo rack is inside the car.

Well, a robotic BMPT will be the same useless toy as a manned one. Now there are hostilities in which our army uses the entire arsenal of new weapons. Where is the BMPT? There are tanks, there are self-propelled guns, there are tactical missile systems, MLRS and guided artillery shells, drones, and even the Su-57 was noted. But where is the BMPT? There is no place for this gun store in the army.

If someone wondered how to create a robotic tank, one should not file tank guns and collect weapons according to the principle "I blinded you from what was." Otherwise, we get a toy that no one needs.

In general, I agree that the presented combat modules cannot be considered successful.
Option 1. With a shortened 125-mm gun and a coaxial machine gun. A shortened cannon is needed for operations in the city, in order to make it easier to maneuver among urban buildings. The reduction in ballistic characteristics is not critical for the following reasons:
      - in the city it is difficult to find a direct shot distance of more than 1 km.
      - in the city, the main danger for armored vehicles are anti-tank systems and hand grenade launchers, not tanks
The choice of the 125-mm gun is justified by the fact that an automatic loader has been worked out for it, which is needed for a robot tank, and for which ammunition is mass-produced. For operations in the city, it is advisable to expand the existing range of ammunition:
      - OFS with a programmable fuse: remote / instant / delayed
      - volumetric detonating increased power

What then is wrong with the weapons complex?
      1. There is no automatic gun with large vertical angles to work through basements and attics in urban areas, as well as to suppress enemy actions while reloading the main gun. In this case, one 30-mm autocannon is sufficient, which has a vertical guidance drive independent of the main gun.
      2. It is advisable to have a DUMV with a machine gun on the turret for all-round self-defense of a robot tank and instant defeat of enemy infantry, identified when examining the area using a panoramic sight.
      3. Even on a robot tank, it is advisable to deploy KAZ tools that will remove 99% of the threats in the city and allow you to identify the directions from which the tank is launched
      4. We need optical and sound reconnaissance equipment to identify / suppress enemy optical sights and directions from which fire is fired at the robot tank.
      5. I would like the developers to think about supplying assault groups and equip the robot tank with armored containers in which ammunition for small arms and hand grenade launchers could be delivered to the front line.
Option 2. Robot tank with two 30mm autocannons and "Bumblebee" blocks. The main question for this option is why 2 30-mm guns? The Terminator originally had one 30mm cannon and a 30mm automatic grenade launcher. But the designers decided that they could fight air targets and replaced the AGS with another 30-mm gun. At the same time, the issue with the search for air targets and target designation for them has not been resolved. Payback - 30-mm guns lost their 2-link power supply. Each barrel is fed by only one tape.
30-mm guns may not be enough to deal with the enemy's fortified firing points, and the "Bumblebees" are there to work in areas. As a result, instead of 2 30-mm guns, it is advisable to install a 57-mm gun.
Option 3. Robot tank with 220mm rockets from TOS. What for? The first ATGM or RPG from the building will turn this robot tank into a flaming shell. It is easier to equip a robot tank with a 125-mm cannon with a new powerful volumetric detonating projectile with reduced ballistics (for example, based on the Invar KUV)

It can still make a heavy infantry fighting vehicle based on the T-72 / T-90, this is an order of magnitude more in demand among the troops than all these robots combined, with the exception of the sapper Uran-6.
Where are the real successes in the use of robotic armored vehicles in combat conditions in Ukraine?
Isn't it better to transfer the infantry to infantry fighting vehicles protected at the level of the main ones?
Not all, but the one that covers the tanks and advances in the first echelon.
The combat units have not seen the advertised T-15 "Barberry" and it seems that they will not see it because of its high cost.
In NATO and Israel, the generals understand the purpose for which heavy infantry fighting vehicles are needed, and have been buying them for a long time, but the Russian generals have broken all their heads, but cannot find a place for them in the structure of regiments, brigades and divisions.
To put them in a BMP-2 or Basurmanin with armor protection at the level of a "tin can" and on the front line in the Donbass for a couple of months, they would certainly recognize the urgent need to supply heavy infantry fighting vehicles to the troops and there would immediately be a place for them.
The number of heavy infantry fighting vehicles must match the number of tanks.
For 3 thousand tanks - 3 thousand TBMP and 6 thousand light (floating) infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers.

TBMP is not a panacea: if you can destroy a tank, then you can destroy TBMP. Much more important now is the massive introduction of KAZ on tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, so as not to suffer damage from anti-tank systems and RGs. Well, the widespread introduction of small UAVs at the company-platoon level.
Where are the real successes in the use of robotic armored vehicles in combat conditions in Ukraine?

There are no successes, because the troops simply do not have such equipment. Combat robots still exist only in the form of prototypes.
To put them in a BMP-2 or Basurmanin with armor protection at the level of a "tin can" and on the front line in the Donbass for a couple of months, they would certainly recognize the urgent need to supply heavy infantry fighting vehicles to the troops and there would immediately be a place for them.

This is a question about the need to revise the tactics of using armored vehicles, training personnel, and the OShS of motorized rifles in general: it is high time to "separate" the landing force from vehicles (armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles).
For 3 thousand tanks - 3 thousand TBMP and 6 thousand light (floating) infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers.

I completely agree that at least a third of lightly armored infantry fighting vehicles should be replaced with TBMPs + the number of engineering equipment should be increased to ensure crossings.

So, the first conclusion: We have our own processors and put them on stream. Second: We managed to reduce the price of iron based on them. Well, the cherry on the cake, the T-72 (of which there are many in warehouses) will still fight (ideally).
