On February 27, the Special Operations Forces (SOF) of the Russian Armed Forces celebrate their professional holiday. The holiday is young, this day appeared on the calendar quite recently, after the well-known events in the Crimea in 2014.
The date of February 27 is not accidental, it was on this day that units of the Special Operations Forces of the Russian Armed Forces entered the peninsula, protecting the inhabitants of Crimea from Ukrainian nationalists and ensuring the holding of a referendum on the entry of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol into Russia. After this operation, the MTR forces in Russia began to be called "polite people", and in the West - "little green men".
The decree on celebrating the Day of Special Operations Forces was signed on February 26, 2015. Russian President Vladimir Putin put his signature under it, paying tribute to the professionalism and courage of these people, conducting operations both on the territory of Russia and abroad. It is worth emphasizing that we will learn about some operations after they are completed, and we will never know about some.
The Special Operations Forces not only have a young holiday, but the MTRs themselves were formed relatively recently already as part of the Russian Armed Forces. In the Soviet Union, the MTR did not exist, their functions were performed by the special forces of the GRU of the General Staff, their units were part of the Airborne Forces. This situation continued until the end of the first decade of the 21st century. For the first time, they started talking about the MTR in 2009, in 2012 the command of the Special Operations Forces was created, and in 2013 the first training center for MTR fighters was opened.
From the moment of formation to the present day, MTR units have participated in many operations on the territory of Russia, Syria and other countries. Currently, the Special Operations Forces of the Russian Armed Forces are taking part in the operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, but the Ministry of Defense does not cover their actions. It is possible that we will learn about some operations carried out by the MTR fighters only after the end of the operation.
