Drones "Sirius" on the eve of testing and release in the series
Currently, the Russian industry is developing several promising unmanned aerial vehicles. aviation complexes with heavy reconnaissance and strike aircraft. One of these complexes is known under the code "Inohodets-RU" or "Sirius". Recently, current plans for this project were disclosed, and this information is encouraging.
Promising project
The promising Sirius UAV is being created by the Kronstadt group as part of the development work of Inohodets-RU. For the first time, this project was openly told in 2019, and the following year they showed a model of the device. In the future, it was repeatedly reported on the implementation of certain works. In particular, in August last year, the management of Kronstadt spoke about the completion of the release of working design documentation and the start of pre-production.
Soon, at the Army-2021 forum, the first contract was signed for the supply of serial aircraft as part of five Inohodets-RU complexes. The timing of the transfer of finished products and its cost remained unknown. By that time, the Kronstadt group had begun construction of a new plant in Dubna, where it was planned to launch the production of serial equipment.
On January 27, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited the new plant, which had recently started its work. He was shown different areas of production and products at different stages of production. In addition, reports were made on the work performed and plans for the near future, incl. and about the Sirius / Inohodets-RU project.
The general director of Kronstadt, Sergey Bogatikov, reported that the company is currently assembling flight samples of the new drone. The first flight of an experienced "Sirius" is scheduled for May this year. Flight tests are expected to be completed by the end of the year. At the same time, a production line for the future series is being prepared at the plant in Dubna.
Further plans were revealed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces Sergey Surovikin. He told the Minister of Defense that the first serial Sirius will enter the troops as early as 2023. This will happen in accordance with last year's contract. At the same time, the volume of deliveries for the next year has not yet been specified.
Development option
According to known data, the Sirius drone is being created as an enlarged and deeply modernized version of the older Orion device. By changing the design, increasing the dimensions and weight, an increase in all the main performance characteristics is achieved, as well as new opportunities are provided for solving the assigned tasks.
The Sirius apparatus retains some resemblance to the base Orion, but at the same time has its own recognizable appearance. It is built according to the normal aerodynamic configuration with a thin fuselage of high aspect ratio, straight wing and V-tail. The bulk of airframe parts for UAVs are made of composites.
Unlike the previous UAV, a twin-engine power plant is used - the motors are placed in gondolas on the wing. The type and characteristics of the engines have not yet been reported. There is an assumption about the unification of engines with the existing Pacer. In the same nacelles on the wing are placed the main landing gear; nose pad retracts into the fuselage.
"Pacer-RU" is larger than the base "Pacer". Its length is 9 m, the wingspan is 23 m. The maximum takeoff weight was set at 2,5 tons; of which up to 1 ton is fuel. The mass of the payload in the form of target equipment and / or means of destruction is 450 kg.
The new UAV is equipped with means of autonomous and remote control over a radio channel. It is planned to install a variety of target equipment with a modular approach to the configuration. The drone can carry an optical-electronic unit or radio systems of various types. With their help, he is able to carry out surveillance and reconnaissance, perform terrain mapping, search for targets and issue target designation. Also, with the help of on-board equipment, independent use of weapons is ensured.
The range of compatible weapons has not yet been named. Previously, at exhibitions, along with the layout of Sirius, rockets and bombs of various types, old and new, controlled and free-falling in calibers from 100 to 500 kg, were demonstrated. Which of them can really use the new UAV is unknown.
According to known data, Inohodets-RU is capable of speeds up to 170-180 km/h. The aerodynamic appearance of the device is due to the need to obtain a high duration and range of flight. The latter parameter is reported to reach 3 thousand km.
The new UAV will be controlled from a unified ground command post. It is being developed by Kronstadt jointly with other organizations and is capable of operating with all modern drones.
Desired Results
Already next year, the Russian Aerospace Forces will receive their first unmanned complex "Inohodets-RU", which will probably include several aircraft at once. They will have to supplement the existing equipment that solves reconnaissance and / or strike tasks. In this case, we are talking about the growth of characteristics and, accordingly, obtaining some new opportunities.
Being a further development of Orion / Pacer, the new Sirius / Pacer-RU will also be able to conduct reconnaissance, find and independently attack ground targets. At the same time, an increase in size and take-off weight will increase all the main operational and combat characteristics - due to the possibility of carrying heavier and more efficient equipment or weapons.
In the future, new heavy reconnaissance and strike UAVs are expected to appear, which will surpass the Sirius in their characteristics. They will also go into service with the Aerospace Forces and will complement the existing equipment.
The result of such processes in the middle of the decade or later will be the formation of a fairly large fleet of heavy drones with broad capabilities. The presence of several models of equipment with different characteristics will allow you to get high combat and operational capabilities. In addition, the flexibility of such a fleet will increase, which will make it possible to more effectively solve the planned tasks.
To date, only the Inokhodets multi-purpose complexes have managed to enter the arsenal of the Aerospace Forces. They are the lightest in the future fleet of UAVs from Kronstadt, which so far imposes certain operational restrictions. However, such devices have already been used during a real combat operation and have clearly demonstrated high combat capabilities.
Latest news
Recent ones news from the field of unmanned aerial systems give rise to healthy optimism. Recently, the Kronstadt group completed and launched a new plant, which will build modern UAVs of various types. The assembly of serial Orions is already underway, which will be transferred to the Ministry of Defense in the near future. Now reports on the work and success in the new project "Sirius".
A number of important events are planned for this year, which will determine the real prospects for Sirius. In a few months, it is planned to begin flight tests to determine the real characteristics and capabilities, and at the end of the year the issue of launching the series will be decided. As a result, the plans of the Ministry of Defense will be fulfilled, and the Aerospace Forces will once again increase their unmanned capability.
