MFA accused USAID of trying to influence political processes in Russia

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) tried to influence the political processes in Russia. About this on Wednesday, 19 September, said the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich.
As the representative of the ministry explained, USAID tried to influence political processes by allocating grants to various organizations that, in particular, worked in elections at various levels.
USAID was created with the US government in 1961. In Russia, this agency began working about 20 years ago. USAID mainly focuses on the development of democracy, the economy and the provision of humanitarian assistance. The day before, on September 18, the US State Department announced that USAID is winding up its operations in Russia.
“This decision was caused, first of all, by the fact that the nature of the work of agency representatives in our country did not always meet the stated goals of promoting bilateral humanitarian cooperation,” Alexander Lukashevich said on Wednesday. The Foreign Ministry official also noted that Russian civil society has become quite mature and does not need “external leadership.”
Officially, USAID activities in Russia will be discontinued from October 1 on 2012. In this regard, the association "Voice", which is engaged in monitoring the elections, reported that the project "Map of Violations" is under threat of closure.
