"Prince Oleg" and "Novosibirsk". Two new nuclear submarines and big plans
The Russian Navy received two new nuclear submarines at once. After passing all the necessary tests, the strategic missile cruiser "Knyaz Oleg" pr. 955A and the multipurpose nuclear submarine "Novosibirsk", pr. 885M were handed over to the customer. In the near future, the ships will make the transition to a permanent duty station as part of the Pacific fleet... It is expected that their appearance will positively affect both the capabilities of the Pacific Fleet and the potential of the entire Navy.
In a solemn atmosphere
The ceremony of handing over two new ships to the customer took place on December 21 at the Severny Machine-Building Enterprise in Severomorsk. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov.
The ceremony was held concurrently with an expanded meeting of the Defense Ministry collegium in Moscow, which was attended by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and President Vladimir Putin. They also joined the ship-surrender ceremony via videoconference.
In the course of such a joint event, the President thanked the Sevmash staff for the work done and noted that he had done an excellent job with the tasks set. The President recalled that the two new nuclear submarines have high performance and wide strike capabilities. By replenishing the Pacific Fleet, they will seriously increase its potential.
Also, V. Putin again mentioned plans for the further construction of a nuclear submarine fleet. In the foreseeable future, "Sevmash" will have to build and transfer to the Navy five SSBNs of project 955A and six APRKs of project 885M. Moreover, the development of the fleet will not be limited only to the construction of submarine forces. The construction of surface ships, coastal infrastructure, etc. will continue.
Deputy Defense Minister A. Krivoruchko and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy N. Evmenov reported on the readiness of the two cruisers for admission to the fleet. In his speech, the Deputy Minister also thanked the participants in the development and construction of new ships. In addition, he pointed to the special significance of the ceremony: for the first time in several decades, two nuclear submarines are simultaneously accepted into the fleet.
During the ceremony, acceptance certificates were signed for two new submarines. In addition, the deputy minister and the commander-in-chief presented the crews with the Andreevsky flags for lifting on ships. "Prince Oleg" and "Novosibirsk" were officially accepted by the customer and became part of the Russian Navy.
During construction
The strategic missile submarine K-552 "Prince Oleg" was built according to the modern project 955A "Borey-A". The multipurpose nuclear submarine K-573 "Novosibirsk" was built on the project 885M "Yasen-M". These ships belong to different classes and have radically different tasks. At the same time, they are united by the fact that both submarines are the first serial representatives of their projects.
The missile cruiser "Novosibirsk" was laid down in July 2013. In late December 2019, it was launched. In July of this year, the ship first entered the factory sea trials. Over the next few months, all the necessary measures were carried out, and the submarine confirmed the calculated characteristics and capabilities. As a result of all these activities, the cruiser was accepted into the Navy.
The first serial submarine "Borey-A" was laid down in July 2014. Construction took several years, and in July 2020 the launch took place. After completing the construction and the necessary preparations, factory tests began at the end of May 2021. As in the case of "Novosibirsk", they took several months and ended with a recommendation for the adoption of a new SSBN in operation.
On December 21, the flag of the Navy was raised on two submarines, and now their service officially begins. In the near future, the ships will move to their permanent duty station. Accordingly, over the next few weeks or months, "Prince Oleg" and "Novosibirsk" will be included in the combat composition of the Pacific Fleet and will be able to go on combat patrols for the first time.
In the fleet
Despite all the problems of the past, the nuclear submarine building program copes with the assigned tasks and ensures the gradual rearmament of the Navy. Several SSBNs of the Borey type and APRK of the Ash project have already been built and put into operation. In addition, construction will not stop at Knyaz Oleg and Novosibirsk.
As a reminder, from 2013 to 2020, the fleet received four Boreas - three basic modification submarines and one modernized project 955A. They were equally divided between the Northern and Pacific fleets. The new "Prince Oleg" will enter the Pacific Fleet and will supplement the two already existing "Boreas".
The construction of the next cruiser is nearing completion right now. "Generalissimo Suvorov" will be launched in the near future and may enter the fleet in a year. Four more submarines are at different stages of construction, with the last two being laid down just a few months ago - in July this year. It is assumed that the new "Borei-A" will be transferred to the fleet almost every year until 2026-27. inclusive.
The situation with "Ash" looks different. So far, only three ARPCs of this type have been completed and handed over. In 2014, the lead ship of the base pr. 885 entered the fleet, and on May 7, 2021, they signed an acceptance certificate for Kazan, the first nuclear submarine of the 885M type. Now the first serial submarine has been delivered. The first two "Ash" were transferred to the Northern Fleet, and "Novosibirsk" will become part of the Pacific Fleet.
The next submarine, Yasen-M, is already preparing for testing. Five more ships are in various stages of construction. They were laid down in 2015-2020. and must pass no later than 2027-28. According to known data, nine pennants will be distributed between the Northern Fleet and the Pacific Fleet almost equally: the Severomorian submariners will receive one more.
Special meaning
It is easy to see that the events of December 21 are of particular importance for the development of our fleet and submarine shipbuilding. They demonstrate positive trends in the construction of the submarine fleet, and also give reasons for optimism regarding the prospects for the Navy as a whole.
In 2020-21 the head nuclear submarines of projects 955A and 885M began service, and now the first serial ships of these types are joining them. The next submarines of two projects are expected to be delivered next year. All this shows that the main difficulties have been overcome, and the construction program has reached the required pace. They will be supported over the next years, and by 2027-28. The navy will receive all the necessary ships.
The current plans for the development of submarine forces provide for the construction of 10 new SSBN "Borey" and 9 multipurpose APRK "Yasen". On December 21, the fifth ship, project 955 (A), was commissioned - and the program for their construction crossed its "equator". "Novosibirsk" became the third combatant representative of pr. 885 (M), i.e. the program is completed by a third.
Further construction of SSBNs of the Borey type, incl. the new "Prince Oleg", in the medium term, will help to carry out a complete re-equipment of the naval components of the strategic nuclear forces with the transition to modern models. At the same time, the required combat capability will be provided for the next several decades.
The construction of multipurpose nuclear submarines pr. 885 (M) will lead to similar results, adjusted for the specifics of this class. They will first complement and then replace older submarine cruisers. Through the use of new solutions, components and weapons, it will be possible to obtain an increase in combat qualities and characteristics. In addition, the newly built submarines will serve for a long time.
Thus, the program for the construction of the latest nuclear submarines for two projects for different purposes continues and successfully fulfills the assigned tasks. Of the 19 ordered ships, 8 have already entered the Navy, and 2 of them were handed over just the other day. New pennants will be regularly adopted in the coming year and beyond. Recent events show that Sevmash and allied submarines will cope with the assigned tasks, and the fleet will receive all the necessary submarines within the required time frame.
