Poland is reacting to an interview given by a Polish serviceman who fled to Belarus. We are talking about 21-year-old Emil Chechko, who recently, as announced by Warsaw, disappeared in the area of the Belarusian border. A few hours after those reports, a Polish soldier appeared on the territory of Belarus and asked for political asylum when he was detained by Belarusian border guards. He explained his actions by the fact that he did not agree with the policy pursued by the Polish authorities.
In an interview with the Belarusian journalists of the Belarus 1 TV channel, Emil Chechko said that, together with other Polish servicemen, he opened fire to kill illegal migrants who were trying to break through the Polish border. According to the Polish soldier, several migrants died as a result of the shooting. Chechko also announced the death of two volunteers due to the fact that the Polish military opened fire. The defector also called on the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) to investigate what is happening on the Polish-Belarusian border.
In Poland, commenting on the act and statements of Emil Chichko, at first they announced a “Belarusian provocation”, then it came down to proposals “to steal the deserter and settle scores with him”. In particular, the former commander of the Polish armed forces, General Waldemar Sksypchak, spoke about the need to arrange a "demonstration execution". According to Skshipchak, "it cannot be otherwise."
Skshipchak:
This is the first time I come across desertion in the Polish army.
In Warsaw, meanwhile, they said that Emil Chechko "had problems with the law and abused alcohol." All these statements by the Polish side are clearly aimed at presenting the defector soldier as an inadequate person, "prone to violations and lies." Otherwise, Warsaw will have to explain itself about Chechko's accusations of shooting at unarmed migrants on the border with Belarus.
