The new Vostok station complex will provide comfortable work for scientists in Antarctica

51

A new wintering complex of the Vostok station has been delivered to Antarctica. Unloading of ships began in the Tala Bay near the Russian Progress station.

Four transport ships with modules of the new Vostok station complex reached Antarctica and began unloading. The complex, consisting of 133 modules, as well as fuel and equipment, were delivered to Antarctica by the Mys Dezhneva, Yaroslav the Wise, Kapitan Khlebnikov and Andrey Osipov vessels.

After unloading, the complex will be moved to Vostok station by sledge-caterpillar trips, where it will slowly gather. It takes four years to move the entire complex and assemble, since work can be carried out in a favorable season, and this is the period of December-February in Antarctica, the rest of the time it is impossible to carry out work.

After assembly, the complex will replace the outdated 1957 assembly and allow scientists to conduct research in comfortable conditions. The station will stand on 36 pylons 3 meters high, which will allow it to remain uncovered for many years. All systems have double or triple redundancy, a two-year supply of fuel and products is provided.

The new Vostok station complex will provide comfortable work for scientists in Antarctica for 15 people for the winter and 35 people for the season.

It will be based one and a half thousand kilometers from the coast at an altitude of about 3500 meters above sea level. The complex consists of modules with a total area of 2,5 thousand square meters. Areas for housing and recreation of polar explorers, laboratory, power plant

- said the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia Alexander Kozlov.

      Here it is right!
It is imperative to invest in science, ideally also in education and medicine.
It is not for nothing that many countries have their own bases (or in collaboration with someone) in Antarctica. It is not for nothing that scientists say that the Arctic and Antarctica are "cauldrons" where the weather is "brewed" all over the planet.
      Such news is good.

Many countries have their own Antarctic bases because there is a moratorium on the delimitation and development of deposits in relation to this continent, rich in minerals. At the time this moratorium is lifted, it is necessary to have a presence in Antarctica in order to claim part of its wealth. Do you think Ukraine or Peru, Ecuador or Poland really need to know the weather in Antarctica? This is a flag.

Dedkastary, look where the oligarch Mikhelson's money went, and it will be delivered 1500 km by "Knights" deep into Antarctica. I'm wondering where they found 50 driver mechanics. It's winter in Russia, too, throughout the entire northern delivery on winter roads and they pay very well for them hard work. And who cares, the project was done under the guidance of one cute little girl Elena Fokina, inside the life support technology is cooler than space.

Namesake, don't touch the old one, you yourself will become so. 50 driver-mechanics do not stay for the winter, but work for a season. They arrived on the same ship where their "Knights" and these modules for transportation are. I think the collectors of modules will also work next year for a short season, as long as conditions permit. Therefore, including 4 years. And this work, yes, hard and risky.

"Therefore, including 4 years. And this work, yes, hard and risky."

Isn't it easier to apply some kind of innovation here - for example, to robotize this work? In space, manipulators have been used for outdoor work for a long time. Perhaps, given the situation, it is cheaper to develop, for example, a robot welder that can work both during a hurricane and at -70 and then also sell such robots to builders for work at heights in winter - they, as you know, always have tight deadlines. And during repairs on northern oil platforms, it will be in demand.

The matter is important, the business is necessary. Only when the designer gets down to business. then somehow it is not done for yourself. I would refuse to live in this hut, on 36 chicken legs. The height of this structure is 15 -20 meters, (the height of the paws is 3 meters, the dimensions of the rest are clear) during a hurricane it will shake. In Norilsk he also fucks capital structures in the presence of snowstorms. The entrance is at a height of about 6-8 meters, how to get there in case of a hurricane? And if a penguin, or a stranger bites the leg, and it is really possible to drag there as a victim. Whoever asked the polar explorers what they want.

In the East, penguins are difficult, they are 1500 km away. Yes, and the legs are hydraulic. The size of the station is 190 m and a width of 14 m. This is what they want. The Germans did not have enough money for this project, ours bought and completely reworked for themselves.

      How Halley VI was built.
Halley 6 was officially opened in Antarctica on February 5, 2013.

As an engineer, I see two important differences in the design of the British and Russian stations:
in Hailey 6 there is a metal load-bearing structure outside the habitable modules.
In the modules of the new Vostok station, the load-bearing structures inside the habitable modules are cold bridges that cannot be completely isolated, thermal efficiency from external metal structures, which means that energy consumption will not be outstanding.
Also, metal structures do not allow to make a large internal volume - the same medical room, where the chair is located under the transverse load-bearing element (frame) - what is this? The pinnacle of design?
In the Russian station, metal power elements from supports to residential modules serve as cold bridges - their design goes under the insulation and will work to remove heat, despite the tricks - such as tearing the cold bridges with gaskets made of low heat-conducting materials.

Now the task is to assemble from these separate modules - "doghouses", in a remote area, where the temperature in summer is -36 degrees C.

Not this way. Judging by the available images and interviews with the chief architect of the project, the habitable part is assembled from separate modules the size of 40-foot containers with their own thermal insulation, which are installed on the load-bearing structure, and then all this is sheathed with another layer of thermal insulation.
