A mess on the Russian throne

The palace coup was caused by a long dynastic crisis in the Russian state. It is interesting that Tsar Peter Alekseevich himself summoned him, when in 1718 he allowed his legitimate son Alexei to be tortured. The son of Peter from his semi-legal wife Catherine (Martha Skavronskaya) Peter Petrovich died in 1719. Then Peter changed the law on succession, and now he himself could appoint his heir. But he could not (or did not have time) to do this and died in 1725. At the same time, before his death, Peter clearly lost interest in the stupid Catherine.

Peter's legal heir was his grandson Peter Alekseevich, the son of the unfortunate Tsarevich Alexei and his wife Charlotte Christina Sophia of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. But he was only 10 years old and there was no powerful court party behind him. Therefore, with the help of the closest "chicks of Petrov's nest" the powerful nobleman Menshikov, the head of the Secret Chancellery of Tolstoy, General-Admiral Apraksin and Chancellor Golovkin, who enlisted the support of the guard, the "cook" Catherine was elevated to the throne. The actual ruler under her was Menshikov.

Soon after the death of Peter the Great, the wedding of his eldest daughter Catherine, Princess Anna, to the Duke of Holstein Karl Friedrich took place in St. Petersburg. Formally, both Anna and Elizabeth were illegitimate daughters of Peter, since they were born before his official marriage to Catherine. But at that time they preferred to keep silent about this, so as not to end up in Siberia or not to end up in a torture basement. Karl Friedrich was the nephew of King Charles XII of Sweden and had the right to claim the throne of Sweden. He did not have land: his fiefdom Schleswig was taken by the Danes. Karl Peter Ulrich, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (future Emperor Peter III Fedorovich) was born from the marriage of Karl Friedrich and Anna. On the female side, he was the heir to two thrones at once - Russian and Swedish.

Catherine did not sit on the throne for a long time. She died in 1727, endless balls, feasts and holidays undermined her health. Even before her death, the upper world was inclined in favor of Pyotr Alekseevich. Catherine herself wanted to appoint her daughter Anna or Elizabeth as heiress, but she feared unrest. Menshikov went over to the side of Peter's camp and obtained the empress's consent to the marriage of his daughter Maria with Peter Alekseevich. Therefore, after the death of Catherine, Peter II became emperor. In fact, he was the only legitimate heir to Peter the Great throughout the XNUMXth century. The origin of all the others was highly controversial.

In 1730, Pyotr Alekseevich died of smallpox, he did not leave any heirs. Therefore, Russian nobles and guards officers chose Anna Ioannovna, the daughter of the feeble-minded Tsar Ivan V (brother and co-ruler of Tsar Peter I), to the throne. Peter the Great in 1710 married his niece to the Duke of Courland, Friedrich Wilhelm. Her husband died quickly, but Anna remained to live in Mitava, finding consolation in the arms of Biron. At first, the St. Petersburg nobles tried to limit Anna's power, but she quickly became an unlimited ruler. The actual ruler of Russia was Biron ("Bironovschina").

The Russian state at this time was in oblivion. The courtyard was concerned about holidays, feasts and revelry. The nobles were engaged in intrigue, the struggle for power. The rulers were weak and worthless. The treasury, army and navy were in decline. The embezzlement, arbitrariness and abuse flourished.

Braunschweig dynasty

Empress Anna needed an heir. She remembered her niece - daughter of Ekaterina Ivanovna and Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Karl Leopold. At birth, she was baptized according to the Protestant rite and named Elizabeth Christina. The couple quickly parted, and Anna returned to Russia, where Elizabeth was baptized according to the Orthodox rite, and she became Anna Leopoldovna.

In 1739, Anna married Anton Ulrich, Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. In 1740 they had a son, Ivan (Ioann Antonovich). Soon the sick Anna Ioannovna issued a manifesto, in which she declared Ivan the Grand Duke with the title of Imperial Highness and heir to the throne of Russia. Biron was appointed regent of Ivan.

On October 17, 1740 Anna Ioannovna died. The next day, the capital swore allegiance to the new infant emperor and regent. Biron became the unrestricted ruler of Russia. But he overestimated his strength. Everyone hated him, he had no support in the capital, and they tolerated Biron as the favorite of the empress. Biron tried to strengthen his position through repression, but these actions had the opposite effect. On the night of November 8-9, 1740, Field Marshal Minich, having received the approval of Anna Leopoldovna, arrested Biron at the head of a small group of guardsmen. The coup was bloodless, no one stood up for Biron. The former all-powerful favorite was sentenced to death, but at the behest of Anna Leopoldovna, the death sentence was replaced with a link to the Northern Urals.

Anna Leopoldovna became the ruler of Russia. Anton Ulrich was proclaimed Generalissimo. Anna was not particularly smart and immediately began an "offensive" against Minich, who elevated her family to the throne. Minich could not stand the pressure and resigned. That is, the most talented commander and manager at that time was removed from the throne.

Anton Ulrich was a very narrow-minded person. He was proclaimed generalissimo, but the duke had no military or administrative talents. The country was left at the mercy of rogues like Osterman, the Saxon envoy of Count Linard, Anna's favorite. Anna herself spent all the time with her favorite Julia Mengden.

War and army discontent

The collapse of the control system, the degradation of the Russian fleet and the armies were no secret to foreigners in Petersburg. It was on the chaos in the Russian capital that Sweden was counting, which decided to take revenge for the defeat in the Northern War and return the Baltic states. The Swedes believed that there would be no serious war, it was enough to start a war and the regime of Anna Leopoldovna would collapse. In the summer of 1741, Stockholm declared war on Russia (How the Swedes tried to take revenge for the Northern War).

At this time, a conspiracy matured in the Russian capital, which was not a secret for Sweden and France (the French were allies of the Swedes). Russian officers, bureaucrats and just society are tired of the German party, which ruled on behalf of worthless monarchs. The most real figure who could ascend the throne instead of the Brunswick dynasty was Elizaveta Petrovna. Quite a lot of time has passed and mostly bright memories remain about the era of Peter the Great. Now only Peter's victories and achievements were recalled. His daughter was seen as the rebirth of a great power and the liberation from the hated German party. No one recalled that she was an illegitimate daughter.

Elizabeth did not receive a good education. She only knew French well (Francopophilism in Russia began with her). She was not interested in enlightenment, did not read, spent all her time in entertainment. At the same time, Elizabeth was kind, friendly and hospitable, she tried to please people. She possessed a "worldly mind", was prone to intrigue and hypocrisy. Realizing the danger of her position, Elizabeth tried to avoid interference in state affairs, portraying a complete fool. She loved hunting, round dances and games, constantly changing her favorite lovers. She loved to go to weddings and christenings, preferring soldiers and officers of the guards regiments.

Elizabeth's "revolution"

As a result, in St. Petersburg there were already two conspiracies in favor of Elizabeth. One spontaneous among the guards. Another conspiracy was prepared by the French envoy, the Marquis Jacques-Joachim de Chetardie, and the Swedish ambassador, Erich Nolcken. The Frenchman acted at the behest of his government, which wanted to destroy the alliance between Russia and Austria, to weaken the position of the German party. France sought to push Russia back to the East. It was believed that Elizaveta Petrovna was inclined towards antiquity, and would return the capital to Moscow. Also, Paris was allied with Stockholm and sought to support the allied Sweden. The interests of other allies of France - Poland and Turkey - were also taken into account. Swedish Ambassador Nolken acted mostly on a proactive basis. The mediator between foreign diplomats and Elizabeth was her personal physician Lestok.

Chetardie suggested that Elizabeth sign an appeal to the Russian army in Finland not to resist the Swedes and give written guarantees of territorial concessions to Sweden. Elizabeth was smart enough not to give written obligations, but in words, apparently, she agreed to everything. Chetardie and Nolken financed the palace coup. French and Swedish money was used to pay off Elizabeth's large debts and to favor the guards.

The ruler Anna Leopoldovna, as well as her ministers, were repeatedly warned about the danger of Elizabeth. Spies reported about it, friendly-minded foreigners reported. There was information that all the threads of the conspiracy were drawn to Lestock. Anna Leopoldovna took this lightly, limiting herself to a "family" conversation with Elizabeth.

On November 24 (December 5), 1741, the government issued an order to send the Guards to Finland to help the active army. There was information that the Swedish army was preparing an attack on Vyborg. But the conspirators took this order at their own expense. That the government specifically wants to remove the guards regiments. Elizabeth's entourage - Vorontsov, Razumovsky, Shuvalov and Lestok, offered to speak immediately. It was reported that the guard would support the "revolution".

Elizabeth hesitated, but in the end she made up her mind. On the night of November 25 (December 6), she put on a cuirass over her dress, got into the sleigh and went to the barracks of the Preobrazhensky regiment. Arriving at the grenadier company, Elizabeth said: “Guys! You know whose daughter I am, follow me!"The soldiers and officers shouted:"Mother! We are ready, we will kill them all!"The Tsesarevna took the cross, knelt down and exclaimed:"I swear by this cross to die for you! Do you swear to die for me? - We swear, we swear!"- the soldiers answered. The crowd headed towards the Winter Palace. On the way, separate units were sent to arrest Minich, Golovkin, Mengden, Osterman and other adherents of the ruling dynasty.

Meeting no resistance, the conspirators entered the Winter Palace. The guards went over to Elizabeth's side. The soldiers woke up and arrested Anna Leopoldovna and her husband Anton Ulrich. In the morning, a manifesto was proclaimed, according to which Elizaveta Petrovna ascended the throne "by legal right, by the closeness of blood to autocratic parents". Those summoned to the Winter Palace took the oath. On November 28, the second manifesto was issued, in which Elizabeth's right to the Russian throne was supported by a reference to the will of Catherine I. Ivan Antonovich was declared an illegal sovereign.

Osterman, Minich, Levenwold and other officials of the Braunschweig government were sent into exile in Siberia. Elizabeth did not know what to do with the Brunswicks. At first they wanted to send them to Western Europe, but they abandoned this idea. The family of Anna Leopoldovna ended up in a prison in Dunamunde, then in Kholmogory. Anna Leopoldovna and Anton Ulrich died in exile. Ivan died under dark circumstances in captivity in Shlisselburg in 1764.

Elizabeth, through the mediation of Chetardie, tried to make peace with Sweden. But the negotiations fell through. The Russian army defeated the Swedes to smithereens and occupied the whole of Finland. Sweden had to ask for peace. Elizabeth "forgave" Sweden, returning Finland, and annexing insignificant territories to Russia (How Elizaveta Petrovna returned Finland, conquered by Russian weapons to Sweden).

Well, yes, the guard wanted to send to fight against the Swedes, but she just chose to change the power. Of course, it's much better to have fun in the capital than freeze in Finland. Here, in general, is a brief retelling of the appearance of the near-by Elizabeth on the throne

Although Elizabeth was little educated, she was by no means narrow-minded. And when necessary, the guard froze and died, so there is nothing to erect slander here. Nearby was just Anna Leopoldovna with her husband.

PS An article in the style of Samsonov, a little informative retelling of what everyone already knows. I expected something more!

Can you justify ?! Her narrow-mindedness, for example, is that she entered the war with Frederick II. Because of personal dislike for him.

Death followed from profuse bleeding from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The shot was fired, in my opinion, almost point-blank, from left to right, through the stomach and liver with the fragmentation of the latter in the right half. The bleeding was profuse. There was also a gunshot wound on the corpse in the back, in the spine, with the fragmentation of the right kidney, and also a point-blank wound in the forehead (probably already dying or dead). The pectoral organs were intact and superficially examined; but there were no signs of death from drowning... The lungs were not distended, and there was no water or foamy fluid in the airways. Rasputin was thrown into the water already dead.

Let's give the floor to the prince and part-time murderer Felix Feliksovich Yusupov
... I realized that the last moment had come.
"Lord, give me the strength to end him!" - I thought
I, and with a slow motion took out the revolver from behind.
Rasputin was still standing in front of me, not moving, with his head bowed to the right and his eyes fixed on the crucifixion.
“Where to shoot,” flashed through my head, “in

Well, at that time, almost every barrel smaller than a rifle was called RevOlvers, although the "advanced" public called all automatic pistols "Browning".
When did Yusupov write his mamuars? And I doubt that against the background of the murder of Rasputin, it was important from what type of weapon he was kicked. The main thing is that they did it. Well ... they thought it was "the main thing."

But the doctor who was supposed to poison the pies intended for Rasputin with cyanide is not silent. As the doctor later admitted, he did not have the spirit to put poison in the pies intended for Rasputin. Or the Hippocratic oath at the wrong time got out of his conscience. And he either put in a harmless substance such as chalk or powdered sugar, or did not put anything at all. So, the rumors about the immunity of our Grigory Yefimych to poisons are pretty exaggerated.

Elizabeth, of course, absolutely did not fit the role of the ruler of a great country - like her mother. Debauchery and drunkenness flourished at court. The decrees were not signed for months due to the unrestrained drunkenness of the Empress. She dragged Russia into a war with Prussia, a state with which Russia did not have common borders and which did not have the slightest claims against Russia.
As for the talentless and mediocre Anton Ulrich, he was a real combat general. In 1737, during the next war with Turkey, he was at the head of the 3rd cuirassier regiment as part of the army. A horse was killed near Ochakov under the prince, two of his pages were mortally wounded. And as a new page in Russia came the young Baron Jerome Karl Friedrich Baron von Munchausen - the same one.

Who, by the way, first entered the battle at the age of 29. And under 23-year-old Anton Ulrich, a horse has already been killed and two of his adjutants who were nearby were mortally wounded. In front of the windows of that Winter Palace (not the Peter's First Winter Palace - it is higher up the Neva, and not the current Rastrellievsky) there was an empty space up to Nevsky Prospect and a field in front of the Admiralty. Thanks for the invitation. You need to write when there is something not known and interesting to everyone. Platitudes will write without me.
In my opinion, I read about the shooting from the windows of the palace at Pyliaev's. And I wondered how it all looked in nature. Looked at the old maps, the place of the palace can be approximately determined. There was no current Admiralty, there was still a Korobov version, in front of it was a rampart, a ditch, an unkempt field with a swamp. In the summer the inhabitants grazed the cattle - in the winter it was like a fair. Naturally, there was no Dvortsovy passage, nor did the General Staff building with an arch. Almost to Nevsky Prospekt there is an empty field, and there is no headquarters of the Guards Corps either. From this side it is clear to the Moika. That is, it is empty within a radius of 300-350 meters, it can be shot through. You can start hunting.
Can such a distance be considered safe for that period? Apparently you can. If we take the plans of the Tsarkoselsky menagerie, then the distance between the hunting pavilions is more than 700 meters. It was logical to spread them to double the maximum range of the shot. So that the tall persons do not shoot at one target. I’m never a hunter, maybe experienced people will fix it.
And I can't help but add that after a while the Menagerie was made a real menagerie - in the 19th century, the fences were demolished, a landscape park was created - Alexandrovsky Tsarkoselsky. They organized a small zoo and elephants lived there. In the summer they were taken to swim in the Lamsky pond, and one of the gates of the park is called the Elephants.
Nowadays, adults, children, cyclists walk along the alleys of the park, horse teams are passing by, the director of Tsarskoye Selo Olga Vladislavovna takes important guests in an electric car and it would be nice to return the elephants that slowly go swimming in the pond.

Anna and Biron were slandered by representatives of the rival Petrovsk branch of the Romanovs. After all, before the death of the unfortunate John Antonovich, all the other emperors and empresses, from the point of view of the law, were usurpers and impostors - Elizabeth, Peter III, Catherine II. And in Soviet times, Pikul tried his best in the novel "Word and Deed". There were no particular horrors during the reign of Anna Ioannovna - everything was within the usual framework. The dominance of the Germans was not there either. The collegia under Anna Ioannovna were headed mainly by Russians, and they also prevailed among the senators. And Russian officers under Anna, on the initiative of the German Minich, were equalized in salary with foreign ones.
Anna was the only empress who left her successors not debts, but a huge amount of money for those times - 2 million rubles. cash.
              Minich recalled her:
“This great empress naturally possessed great dignity. She had a clear and discerning mind, knew the character of everyone around her, loved order and splendor, and never was the court managed so well as in her reign. "
And even Frederick the Great was not too lazy to write:
“She is distinguished by the sublimity of the soul, the firmness of the mind; generous in rewards, strict in punishments, she was kind by natural inclinations and voluptuous without debauchery "(in contrast to Catherine II, who is just" with debauchery ").
Biron is also demonized. "Bironovschina" lasted 3 weeks. During this time, the terrible Biron pardoned many convicts, lowered the poll tax and, in order to combat luxury, banned the wearing of a dress made of material more expensive than 4 rubles per arshin.

      Eugene,
According to my information, the Lower Dacha has not been restored and its fate is in question. In 2015, the concept of restoration was prepared and discussed by specialized organizations. A number of options have been proposed, from preserving the ruins to rebuilding with additions. They did not come to a consensus, the option was not selected. As a result, even the State order for the reconstruction project (as they usually write the reconstruction, taking into account the further use as a museum) has not been prepared or financed. Consequently, the work cannot be carried out without an appropriate project.

Dear author! And who and when determined that 15-year-old Ivan 5 was so weak, so weak in health that he could not reign? What was the seizure? Like how his half-brother Peter had seizures? And the frail and sickly Vanechka managed to create 5 girls in a legal marriage and not one, it seems, did not suffer from "epilepsy"? Which of the Streletsky colonels with his older sister Sofyushka (9 years older than all his brother Ivan's) slept is still a great mystery. Yes, did someone perform the autopsy of Ivan 5? Peter, our Great, was somehow buried in a non-Christian way. It looks like non-inorganic poisons, and even more so on organic ones, neither the stomach, nor the kidneys, nor the liver were examined. Not according to the protocol of the then the whole procedure of his funeral. Maybe only so that the color of the tsar's internal organs did not lead anyone to bad thoughts about poisoning, they embalmed him like a pharaoh? ... Perhaps that is why, having taken the throne, she never once put on the same dress twice - she wanted to make up for the previously lost opportunities. The fear of the dark can also be attributed to the peculiarities of the psychological makeup of Elizaveta Petrovna. As a result, the palace chambers were always brightly lit at night. And the empress was also extremely superstitious and was afraid of any talk about death and even hints of death. A ban on the passage of funeral processions through the streets, which were visible from the windows of the imperial palace, was issued and strictly observed.

The official wedding of Peter I to Ekaterina Alekseevna took place on February 19, 1712 in the Church of St. Isaac of Dalmatsky in St. Petersburg
and in the first Russian coronation, held in the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin on May 7, 1724: the laying on of the imperial crown by Peter the Great on his wife Catherine
and then Samsonov writes that before his death, Peter grew cold
At the same time, before his death, Peter clearly lost interest in the stupid Catherine.

yes he has cooled to everything! He was already completely dead ...
Have the author seen women? In general, they are very attractive to men.
Franz Villebois wrote that she was a beauty.
The girl (although he was no longer a girl) who seduced the count, the Prince of the Radiant and the king himself from the first time (all three were carried at her at first sight), you know ... it's worth a lot (the king really cost somewhere one ducat, but then half a kingdom )
Tolstoy described it with a well-aimed phrase - no one had a skirt so fervently dangling on. A cheerful, thirsty and groovy girl ... the dream of the poet of the time.
Considering that she was pregnant, she was not sitting in the capital, but was on a campaign - and its importance for Peter is difficult to assess ... He then sewed his son, and ordered the women to be shot as well. Being his mistress (Ankhen ask) is extremely difficult. And a wife is simply dangerous (ask Lopukhin)
Women's time on the All-Russian throne is very interesting.
But except for the Great Economy, no one wanted to deal with it.

Arsenic, mercury, lead - came to the kings of Alopex lagopus ... Not long ago, in the 20th century, the remains of Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan, the very one whom the tsar killed in Repin's painting, was examined. And the first, and the second, and the third - in the wildest quantities. They hounded for a long time and constantly, it seems. Both the tsar and his son Ivan had wives ... Relatives of abandoned wives could persecute - yes. And how to exclude from the number of suspects the near and distant boyars that they considered their relatives ready to sit on the Moscow throne? We remember about the East (coffee with diamond powder) and Venice and Genoa, but our courtiers are worse? And about our organic matter: herbs, berries, mushrooms, even from the taiga, even from deciduous forests, even from the steppes, even from the mountains - the choice is dizzying, grass - whatever your heart desires ...
Well, in the 20th century. Cheyne - Stokes' breath is not worse at all than a snuff box and an officer's scarf ... I remembered at a meeting with Golda Mabovich Pearl Karpovskaya in her native language whose daughter she is - not in a cold monastery on Solovki or in Belozersk forever, but just a five in a link to the sun in Kazakh SSR ... Since 1991 there have been so many things where it is almost impossible to find the truth. In the 20th century this is even more, and even in the 19th century and earlier - solid October fog, moreover, at night with rain and sleet.

3x3zsave (Anton), Pane Kokhanku (Nikolay), I remember that Nikolay lives in the South-West. I once wrote in the comments that Krasnoselsky became almost my home area for me. Soon 10 years will be, as in the area of Leninsky Prospekt - st. Valor I built an apartment for my eldest daughter. A very smart blonde received 2 honors diplomas, and even took prizes in 2 international competitions of student scientific papers, the candidate was almost ready, but love is evil - you will fall in love with an intern doctor, who had also graduated from a medical school before the Medical Academy. So I took my granddaughter to the kindergarten on Stachek Avenue, 89, building 2, just opposite the monuments to the Blockade tram and KV-85. The guys lived in the apartment of their son-in-law's grandmother. At that time, her daughter worked in hospital 31 on Krestovsky Island. For years, I watched as instead of the Brown line, the metro was built (at the intersection of Marshal Zhukov and Marshal Kazakov there was a t-shi-na in the mine), then the Green (after all, the 22 dollar millionaire on the green grass is either our FSE, or - fi .. .), then Violet (spies of all countries, if you want to easily get lost in the crowd - make an appointment in St. Petersburg at the Shushary station at 11 o'clock ...) ... Then they drove across the country with their son-in-law, the son-in-law began to make a career. Then the youngest grew up, blonde, beautiful as a mother and smart as a father. I went to St. Petersburg, since there was a roof over my head. Not like an older sister. That until April 4 courses in a rented apartment with two neighbors (while in dormitories, the lady from all sides is positive, for bribes they did not pack for 3 years really), then in the hostel. How she became a resident - again there is no hostel, she lived in the department ... This year, the youngest daughter received a red diploma at ITMO University, lived in St. Petersburg for 6 years, and was offered a job there ... And even a nephew, having lived 10 years in Tyumen , found a husband from St. Petersburg on vacation in Turkey. They live a 15-minute walk from us, on the street. Richard Sorge next to st. And nevertheless, the economy grew under Anna Ioannovna. So, in 1730 the country produced 633 thousand poods of cast iron, in 1740 - 1068 thousand poods. 22 new metallurgical plants were built, iron exports increased 4,5 times, copper production was increased from 5 to 30 thousand poods. 1725 enterprises worked in the textile industry in 39, and 1745 in 71. Thus, under Anna Ioannovna, the work started by Peter continued. The light industry also received an impetus for development. In 1741, the serf of Count Sheremetev, Grigory Butrimov, built a manufactory in the village of Ivanovo, in which civilian peasants worked. The beginning of light industry was laid in Ivanovo - linen, then chintz and cotton. The development of mining and the organization of management of the mining industry became important for the development of the country's economy. In 1731, Berg and the Manufactory Collegium were merged with the Commerce Collegium. The new institution consisted of 3 expeditions. The argument for this was that the products of mining plants and manufactories are sold through the Commerce Collegium, so the existence of separate Berg and Manufactory Collegiums was considered inexpedient. In 1731, the mining expedition of the Commerce Collegium was transformed into an independent central institution subordinate to the Cabinet and the Berg Directory appeared, then in 1736 the General Berg Directory was created, acting as a collegium.
In March 1739, the Berg-Regulations were approved, which confirmed the right of everyone who discovers minerals to develop them, state peasants were allowed to register with private factories, and breeders were exempted from duties on delivered products and supplies.
Foreigners were treated with caution in trade. In 1733, the Prussian entrepreneur was refused to transfer his company to the state-owned cloth factories in Moscow and Kazan. The Englishman Meer in 1739 did not receive the requested factories in Siberia "for maintenance". In June 1731, a decree on merchants was issued, facilitating their duties. They tried to stimulate trade and entrepreneurship. A new customs tariff was adopted in 1731. The duties on goods imported into Russia that had Russian counterparts were reduced from 75 to 20% compared to the tariff in 1724. For goods needed by Russia - up to 5%. Export duties have been canceled. The Commission of the Commercial Board, which studied this problem, came to the conclusion that foreign merchants did not pay this duty, secretly bringing their goods to Russia. And Russian industrialists, taking advantage of the absence of foreign competition, produced low-quality products. In the field of finance, an 8% loan was established from the Mint, which laid the foundation for banking in 1733, the reason was the investigation of the activities of the Meshchersky princes, who took too much interest on loans.
In 1731, the state monopolies on salt and rhubarb were restored.
Various measures were taken to obtain arrears. Moreover, the government called the landowners the culprits. In 1737, another decree followed, in which the landowners-debtors were ordered to be expelled from the villages and houses. In 1738, the total amount of arrears amounted to 1,971 million rubles. 553 thousand of them fell on the "noble". In January 1739, a decree followed, threatening to write off the estates to the treasury. In June, even more stringent - the requirement to sell estates under the hammer.
And military affairs were going well. In the summer of 1736, our troops under the command of Minich broke into the Crimea, occupied the capital of the Crimean Khanate, the city of Bakhchisarai, burned the khan's palace and the huge khan's library located in the palace.
