Formations capable of conducting large-scale network-centric operations have appeared in the Russian army

35

Over the past several years, the Russian army has been carrying out measures to integrate and master the Unified Tactical Control System (ESU TZ). The units and formations regularly and rhythmically receive separate means and complexes from the composition of this system, due to which the existing control loops are modernized. In the foreseeable future, it is planned to complete the transfer of the army to the ESU TK and fully receive all the expected benefits.

Retrofitting processes

ESU TK was developed by the Sozvezdie concern (now part of the Ruselectronics holding of the Rostec state corporation) with the participation of a number of other enterprises since the beginning of the 2010s. By XNUMX, work was completed on the first version of the project, which was then sent off for revision. The final version of the new control system was created and tested in the mid-tenths.

At the end of 2018, the first contract was signed for the supply of serial components of ESU TZ to combat units of our army. It was reported that the transfer and introduction of new products will begin in 2019 and will continue for several years. The domestic press reported that 2020 brigade sets of new equipment are planned to be delivered to the troops by the end of 40.

The production, supply, development and integration of new communication and control devices continues to this day and shows some success. So, in mid-October, the Ministry of Defense reported that by now four formations of ground forces have been completely transferred to the ESU TZ. Two more similar kits will be delivered by the end of the year. At the same time, the recipients of the new equipment and its number are not specified.

December 1, RIA News with reference to its "informed sources" revealed new details of the update of control systems. The agency confirms the information on the equipping of several connections with the new ESU TK. In particular, they recalled that the Vistula motorized rifle division had recently undergone a similar modernization.

Also, sources of RIA Novosti indicate the receipt of fundamentally new opportunities. Having received ESU TK, combat units can participate in full-scale network-centric operations. Accordingly, information and communication superiority over the enemy is ensured.

New opportunities

The unified control system and its individual components are mastered by the troops and are regularly used in practical activities. So, five years ago, the first major exercise took place with the use of the then experienced ESU TK - "Kavkaz-2016". In the future, experimental equipment was repeatedly used in new exercises, and since 2019, serial samples have been used in maneuvers of various levels and scales.

This year, similar exercises continued, and this time completely new capabilities were tested and practiced. For example, in January, the Ministry of Defense reported that artillery exercises were held at the training grounds of the Western Military District, in which network-centric principles of combat work were used.

The available UAVs conducted reconnaissance, spotted objects of the imaginary enemy and, through the ESU TZ, gave target designation to fire weapons in the form of batteries of the Msta-SM2 self-propelled guns. Self-propelled guns fired, and the calculations of unmanned systems carried out the adjustment. Working through the ESU TK made it possible to speed up the exchange of data at times and get an almost real time scale.

It is obvious that such events will continue. New means of communication and control will gradually master and test all artillery units at the range. In addition, similar training for other combat arms will continue. Also ESU TK will ensure the fight against a conditional enemy in the course of all future full-scale exercises.

Principles of modernization

ESU TK is a complex multicomponent system that unites all types of troops and formations of different levels. Due to this, a single information and control space is formed, which ensures the accumulation, processing and distribution of data about the situation on the battlefield, about goals, etc. The unification of intelligence, command and fire weapons through the ESU TZ makes it possible to accelerate the speed of the military groupings and, accordingly, increase their effectiveness.

According to available data, the ESU TK in its current form includes 11 subsystems for various purposes. First of all, it is a single information network that unites military communications of all types used. There are also separate control subsystems for different types of troops, electronic intelligence and electronic warfare subsystems, as well as means of control over material and technical support.

ESU TK is built on the basis of command-staff vehicles and communication systems of modern models with the necessary equipment. It also provides for the integration into the system of existing control points for various purposes, for which additional hardware or software modules are used.

Integration tanks, ACS and other combat vehicles in ESU TZ is carried out at the expense of appropriate communication means and special terminals. They can be installed during the construction phase of a new machine or during its modernization. For example, this year the industry announced that the promising T-14 MBT will initially carry the necessary devices. In addition, a unified kit is being developed for installation on older machines.

The infantry is encouraged to use similar terminals, but in a different design. Such products are included in the command version of the Ratnik outfit and, in some cases, are integrated with other devices.

Future systems

The development and fine-tuning of the future Unified Command and Control System of the tactical echelon lasted for a decade and a half. However, the work was completed with the required results, and fundamentally new communication and control systems entered the series and went to the troops. To date, ESU TZ has been deployed and is fully operational in several large formations of ground forces. In addition, new tools are regularly mobilized for exercises and are showing their full potential.

Thanks to ESU TK for the first time in stories Our army has created and deployed high-speed, high-performance integrated control loops that unite all branches of the armed forces and auxiliary structures. This increases the main indicators of the army, and also gives it fundamentally new opportunities. Now any firearm has a connection with any reconnaissance means, and the speed of reaction to emerging threats grows significantly.

In the coming years, the main task for the development of communications and management will be the production and development of new brigade or divisional sets of ESU TK, as well as the release of equipment that initially has the necessary equipment. In parallel with this, work should be carried out to modernize existing components of the control system or develop new ones. As a result, a complete transition of the army to ESU TK should be expected in a few years, which will lead to obvious positive consequences.

Very good news ... the perennial problem of scouting and making quick decisions based on scouting results will finally be solved.
In modern combat, time has begun to play a decisive role ... whoever is the first to conduct reconnaissance and strike is the winner.

what to talk about? All of this will become more, it will be mastered by the troops and will be included in a single chain of control and management of the training, and possibly the combat process.
This has been going on for a long time.

So it is so, but the foe also has electronic warfare means. Let's say the UAV sees the villain, and they "shamanize" and the MSTA hits their own. Can this be? I would not categorically argue that this is out of the question.

The old saying ... for every CROWBAR, there is another, opposite!
Military science, and many other things, is the struggle of "sword against shield".
But, everything goes along the path of complication ... it is not always possible to get by with the old methods, you can reduce the effectiveness of a good, destructive weapon ... and in the civilian sphere everything is the same.
What comes to mind ... equipment for identification and duplication of command systems, networks, complication of codes.
Something like this ... automation, digitalization, AI can no longer be abandoned, without very serious reasons.

The article is some kind of continuous advertisement. In my opinion, the author himself did not really understand what network-centric wars are and bombarded us with a huge number of words.
The network-centric principle was developed in the mid-80s by Marshal Ogarkov, but for some reason it is attributed to the Americans. Imagine how powerful our country, our army would be, if only these effective managers had not crawled through.
    What is network centric principle?
    It is a
The network-centric principle is one of the key in the military reform that the Pentagon has been pursuing since the 1990s. According to this principle, the command, as well as each unit on the battlefield, each tank, and even each soldier will be integrated into one information network, exchange information, receive all necessary information about the enemy, which should increase the combat effectiveness of both the entire army and each of its component.

In other words, there should be a huge number of different reconnaissance equipment, all reconnaissance information should be concentrated in one hand and then distributed among the appropriate units. The command must have complete information about each unit, each unit of armored vehicles, and each military unit.
Unfortunately, we are still far from this level, and fortunately they too.

Hike, you yourself do not understand what network centricity is)))
It is not enough to read what has been written, it is desirable to have an understanding of how it looks - and without knowledge of working with a computer at the level of an experienced user, this is physically impossible.
That is, without experience with a computer, it is simply impossible to understand (correctly) what network centricity is.

      Not at all like that.
The idea is that even an infantryman, not to mention the crews of ships, attack aircraft, etc. had instant access to any kind of reconnaissance and tactical situation on the battlefield.
That makes it possible not to overlap areas, but to act with the necessary forces in the right place, bypassing positional and defensive battles.

ESU TK in the troops is needed, as they say, even yesterday. But not to see the problems with the implementation and development of such a demanded system, in my opinion, is criminal.
For example, the first ACS of the battlefield "Maneuver" was developed in the 60s of the last century. Several years of military trials and after that almost 30 years of complete oblivion. They remembered about the ACS SV only in the early 2000s, and on the initiative of industrialists from the Sozvezdie concern. The result - the beginning of mass production and the beginning of the introduction of the first components of the ISU TK into the troops almost 20 years later! Even for military aviation and space projects, such a long cycle is too much. For information technology, a 20-year technological cycle is practically death. Suffice it to say that during this time the technological and element base itself has been updated by 100%, and several times.
Now it is not enough to saturate the troops with a sufficient number of sets of ISU TK, it is still necessary to teach people to interact with the automated control system of the higher echelon and other types of troops. At first, it can be in manual mode, then you can write translators and create interfaces.
Network centrism as a concept in the ISU TK is not only the main component of ensuring survivability and reducing the time cycle of management. The main task of network centrism is the fundamental possibility of achieving a synergistic effect! And for this, the troops need not only to be armed with the ISU TK system, but also to learn how to manage operations and plan them in real time, which is quite unusual for the ground forces. And this is again time and an endless struggle with stereotypes and inertia of thinking.

"Now it is not enough to saturate the troops with a sufficient number of sets of ISU TK, we still need to teach people to interact with the ACS of the higher echelon and other types of troops."

Just as a computer without an operating system is useless for an ordinary user (not a programmer), so a combat ACS without its own operating system is incomprehensible to the user and requires high qualifications to work (it was the lack of an OS (interface) that was the main brake earlier).
In fact, the development of a military operating system for ACS will drastically reduce the qualification requirements for personnel. This was also realized with the release of the first Windows.
For clarity - on Win 95, at one time, each user had to know how, WHERE and why to install this file when installing Windows, made a mistake with a daddy and that's it, start over. And already in Win 10, the operating system does EVERYTHING by itself, automatically, for the user, he only has to confirm the action.
This is how the military ACS should develop in the troops - an intuitive and friendly interface for the user is needed.

How a computer without an operating system is useless to the average user

The first military operating system of the MS Armed Forces was developed back in the late 90s on the basis of Win-98 with open source. Now about 10 versions have already been released there, though already based on the Linux kernel.
The problem was in a single certified DBMS and corresponding GIS. But it was already decided long ago.

      Uv. Evgeniy,
I dare to argue with you. First of all, the "Maneuver" ACCU is not one product, but a large highly mobile automated command and control system for the front troops, consisting of many subsystems, which in turn consist of an even larger number of command and control control, PU, attached means and communication systems, reconnaissance, etc.
When developing the "Maneuver" ACCU, the most modern digital methods and technical means of collecting, processing, displaying and transmitting data were used. Yes, the domestic component base at that time lagged somewhat behind the component base developed in Western countries, but at the same time the automation tools created on its basis ensured the fulfillment of the tasks set by the Customer, albeit due to the somewhat large dimensions, weight and energy consumption of equipment developed using domestic components ...
Naturally, due to the scale and complexity of such an automated control system, it was necessary to develop and manufacture some of its CP and PU in the first place, some in the second, etc.
In particular, the priority objects were those that ensure the solution of command and control tasks in real time, for example, tasks of command and control of air defense units and subunits of the Sukhoi Troops. These include the objects PORI P1, PORI P2, Ranzhir, Polyana D4, etc. All these objects have passed the entire test cycle prescribed for them, were adopted and entered the troops, including the GSVG.
Of course, after the collapse of the Union, these developments were in the shadows and for a long time they were given minimal attention, but nevertheless, their production continued and, as new components appeared, they were modernized.
At the same time, the fundamental technical solutions used in the development of these CP and PU did not essentially change. And if you take a close look at the current developments of the Russian concern Constellation in the field of automation of command and control of troops, then you can (if you can, of course) see that this is nothing more than the reincarnation of the developments carried out by the Belarusian NPO Agat and its parent enterprise, the Minsk Research Institute of Automation Means in the early 70s and mid 80s.
And therefore, your "Cry of Yaroslavna" about the "Maneuver" ACCS and spitting towards its creators (and in the development of this system, in addition to NIISA, dozens of research institutes and design bureaus of the former Soviet Union took part), to put it mildly and roughly speaking, is somewhat unsubstantiated. Those. not justified at all.

Yes, I don’t argue which respected organizations all this developed this system, which had a bunch of equipment on the old element base ... Moreover, the representatives of the factories themselves could not do a fig with their offspring !!! In my service, it developed that I received such samples for running-in ... And all suitability ultimately came down to beauty at exhibitions, and I was advised not to twitch ... That was until 2008, now I don't know!

At the beginning of the Second World War, at the command posts and at the headquarters of the Red Army, they were afraid to use radio communications, since the Germans immediately directed and directed attack aircraft.
Will ESU TK become a primary target? Will the compound retain its ability to fight after breaking the established control scheme?
It is necessary to duplicate all this and, moreover, to reduce the dimensions, otherwise the amount of equipment in the TSU TK system looks no less than the "connection" itself. You cannot put eggs in one basket, that is, in the Unified Management System.

Those who like tossing their caps into the air with or without reason would find it useful to re-read the article on network-centric wars. published here on VO many years ago and ask ourselves a question, what has changed in the RF Armed Forces in terms of the possibility of waging network-centric wars in comparison with those years https://topwar.ru/34855-pervaya-setecentricheskaya-voyna.html
This is the same as with artificial intelligence. A storm of enthusiasm, but in fact, AI are still only computerized adaptive information processing and control systems with a very limited range of tasks, in which homo sapiens plays the main role in decision-making, i.e. a reasonable person. He's just bad, he's not always reasonable.
As for the ACCS, many modern ACCUs were developed in the mid-60s and mid-80s of the last century, have long been produced at Russian enterprises and have long been used in the RF Armed Forces. In particular, highly mobile launchers and command and control systems of the ACS by the ground forces of the front and the air defense units attached to them, artillery and missile forces, etc. One of the first users of these ACCUs was the Group of Soviet Troops in Germany (GSVG), but these ACCUs and their modern modifications were not then able to provide full-fledged waging of network-centric wars, i.e. elements of network centrics.
