Kiev complained about Russia ignoring calls to start negotiations on a new gas transit agreement
Ukraine would like to conclude a new agreement on gas transit to Europe, but Russia ignores all Kiev's attempts to start negotiations on this topic. According to the head of Naftogaz, Yuri Vitrenko, at the present time there is not even a hint that the dialogue will begin.
The agreement signed by Ukraine with Russia for the transit of gas through its territory is valid until the end of 2024. It involves pumping 40 billion cubic meters of gas a year, and Gazprom pays regardless of whether it uses the Ukrainian GTS or not. Despite the fact that there is still enough time before the end of the contract, Kiev wants to conclude a new agreement on gas transit, preferably a long-term one, for 15 years.
However, everything rests on the position of Moscow, or rather, on the complete disregard of Ukrainian wishes by Russian Gazprom. The company's management simply does not pay attention to the statements made from Kiev, continuing to fulfill its obligations under the current contract.
This position of Moscow does not suit the Ukrainian authorities, especially when there is a threat of loss of up to 2,5 billion dollars a year received from the Russian company for pumping gas. Therefore, the management of Naftogaz and the Ukrainian GTS Operator never tire of giving interviews in which they declare the danger of the new Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 in an attempt to prevent its exploitation and force Russia to continue transit through Ukraine.
According to Vitrenko, Kiev resolves issues with the continuation of transit with the Americans and Germans and tells them what Ukraine would like, while Russia does not even hint that it is interested in this issue.
