Without overhaul and weapons: the United States "presented" Greece with more than a thousand M1117 armored cars

M1117 US Armed Forces

The Greek army received the first batch of M1117 Guardian armored personnel carriers as part of the US program for the supply of surplus military products abroad. Senior military officials expressed their gratitude for the help of the American partner. However, it raises a big question to what extent this "gift" is gratuitous.

As part of the first delivery, 44 vehicles were delivered, 450 units are planned to be shipped by the end of the year, and by April 2022 the deal will be closed, having delivered a total of 1200 М1117.

According to Shephard Defense Insight, Greece will pay $ 102 million for this "aid" - "for transport costs and inspection costs [that is, for checking the technical condition]":

Any major overhaul or installation of additional subsystems necessary for the equipment to be suitable for operation will entail additional costs.

As noted in the Greek press, the received armored personnel carriers have no weapons.

Without overhaul and weapons: the United States "presented" Greece with more than a thousand M1117 armored cars

M1117 Greek Armed Forces

That is, in fact, Greece receives each M1117 armored personnel carrier for $ 85 thousand or 6,4 million rubles. At the same time, in the future, it will be necessary to purchase spare parts for this equipment (not to mention weapons), although it is argued that "the previously transferred machines were not used in any of the military operations."

The Ptisidiastima edition indicates that the M1117 will replace the Mercedes GD240 SUV.

They will sell it somewhere and it will turn out that with the purchase of armored cars they will blow it out to zero. And the fact that there is no weapons, so that in Greece there are not at least 1200 Maximov in the storehouse.

Yes, in 89, we wrote off 69 and 5 seaters from the storage of GAZ 7 and sold Zero - unbroken ones. They left with a whistle. A shishigi 3 pieces - removed from storage and distributed to the unit, we got one as a duty officer. With the quality seal! Here the device was .... While our 53rd drove him to the Lawn, he did not bother him. It's good that everyone survived. But shishige krany - the cabin was taken away strongly. Our ensign then dug a used cabin, but a whole one somewhere. Replaced. And then he drove again.

Threat ensign is IMHO, in general, the special essence of the CA was, if the campaign runs out of nuclear charges, you turn to the ensigns - they will dig it in their bins too. Yes

It was more logical that it was unused all-terrain vehicles that were social and for some others, like foresters, to send services and commercially alter only the payload - instead of a kung, to install specialized medical facilities or cages for animals in reserves - from private cooperative contractors and they also carry out maintenance and restoration. Now, of course, the times and the approach are different, and now, in order to get a large serial production, it is better to order off-road vehicles directly from the manufacturers, since the old models are already very outdated morally.

I did just for this purpose
in the 2000s, it was actively purchased by the US army as a kind of "light ersatz-MRAP" for use in hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of HMMWV vehicles. In total, the US Army purchased 2058 units plus 844 vehicles of the advanced M1200 aircraft controllers based on them. By now, the main part of the M1117 machines has been transferred to storage as surplus and must now be transferred to Greece.

I thought that the replacement for the armored HMMWV is the Oshkosh LATV. M1117 seems to be like Oshkosh lightly armored vehicles. In addition, the HMMWV is also a complete set of widespread use in the army. Most likely, there will be almost no purchases of spare parts, except for weapons. Because bulkhead production will be organized and some of the machines will be disassembled for parts. This also explains well such redundancy of the fleet - out of a dozen, they will fully restore one car, another one to a partially alive state.
If the Greeks have a commercial streak, then the remnants of the repairs will also be shoved off the Colombians.

It always "touches" how the authors of such articles manage to present in a negative connotation everything that happens "over the hill"! lol It is enough to put the word "presented" in quotes and the whole meaning changes!
USA provided irrevocably more than 1000 armored cars of Greece! M1117 are not bad for their class, and a thousand is more than many armies in the world have! As the saying goes, "go and take", the price of transport and additional equipment in all cases is much less than buying them at market prices!

Look better at the characteristics before finding fault. The V-shaped bottom can withstand a mine detonation of 5.4 kg in TNT equivalent. Ceramic composite armor protects the vehicle from 12.7 mm armor-piercing bullets. Amers have good quality equipment, it is unlikely that the mechanics will have to constantly dig into them like in Soviet-era crafts. The Greeks grabbed a large amount of suitable equipment for nothing.
