British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth resumes participation in exercises in the Mediterranean after the fall of the F-35B
The military exercise, in which the aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy of Great Britain HMS Queen Elizabeth is involved, took place in the Mediterranean Sea, near the island of Sicily. The fighters of the Italian Navy and Air Force also took part in them. Thus, Italy became the second country after the United States to use aircraft from a British aircraft carrier.
The first phase of the exercise consisted of two F-35Bs from the 211st Fighter Squadron of the US Marine Corps landing on Cavour. This was followed by the F-35B of the Italian Navy and the F-35B of the Italian Air Force, which landed on a British aircraft carrier. In the third phase of the exercise, fighters took off from two aircraft carriers and made flights to ensure the integration of joint actions of the naval aviation three states.
As the commander of the aircraft carrier strike group Steve Moorhouse noted, the interaction of American, British and Italian F-35B aircraft provides NATO with tactical maneuverability and a strategic advantage over potential enemy aircraft in the skies over the Mediterranean Sea.
The exercises were watched by high-ranking Italian military officials - the chief of the Italian defense staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the commander-in-chief of the naval forces, Admiral Enrique Credendino, and the commander-in-chief of the Italian air force, General Luca Goretti. Interestingly, earlier in 2021, the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour visited the United States, where specialists from the test group of the F-35 Joint Program Office worked on it. On April 30, 2021, the aircraft carrier returned to Italy.
In addition to the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, a number of British ships are currently in the Mediterranean Sea, which are participating in joint military exercises with Italy. For example, the frigate HMS Richmond arrived in Malta. The frigate of the Netherlands Navy HMNLS Evertsen arrived in the port of Catania, which is also to join the group of ships of the NATO countries. The British destroyer HMS Defender will also take part in the exercises, as well as, probably, the frigate HMS Kent, which previously participated in the operations of the Bahrain naval forces in the Persian Gulf. These are ships from the British Navy AUG.
Based on the results of the exercises, the British, American and Italian military will draw appropriate conclusions. In particular, the requirements for the maintenance of naval aircraft will be determined.
At the same time, the British military department noted that they continue to take measures to prevent third-country military access to the F-35B fighter that fell into the Mediterranean Sea. Recall that earlier in London they announced their readiness to guard the crash site. However, who is "protecting" this place and where exactly it is located has not yet been reported. The Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom said earlier that the plane fell into the sea, probably due to the fault of the technical service, which did not properly prepare the fighter for flight. However, none of the technical service from the aircraft carrier was sent ashore. It turns out that the same people continue to serve the flights from the HMS Queen Elizabeth.
