The United Arab Emirates is currently hosting the Dubai Airshow-2021 international air show. One of the main and most interesting novelties of this event was the promising B-350 turboprop attack aircraft from the Emirati Calidus LLC group of companies. It differs from other vehicles of its class by its increased size and weight, due to which it can carry a significant combat load.

On the way to the exhibition

The Calidus group has been dealing with turboprop attack aircraft for a long time. Back in 2017, she presented a promising B-250 aircraft, and later received the first order for the serial production of such equipment. It is curious that the direct development and construction of such an attack aircraft was carried out by the Brazilian company Novaer and its subcontractors, while Calidus LLC acted as the initiator, organizer and investor. Probably, this approach paid off, and it was used in the development of the next project.

At the end of last year, the corporate magazine of the Czech company Charvát Group sro first mentioned the Calidus B-350 project and revealed some of its details. It has been argued that it will be a multipurpose combat training aircraft, and its development is being carried out with the support of the UAE government. Some design features and specifications were reported. It was also mentioned that Charvát is involved in the project as a chassis developer.

The official premiere of the B-350 project took place on November 14, the first day of the Dubai Airshow-2021. The static display included a full-size model of the future attack aircraft. All the nodes of the external suspension under the wing are occupied by layouts of various weapons, and several more such items were laid out in front of the plane.

As follows from the published data, in the near future the construction of the first flight prototype will be completed and its tests will begin. Czech aircraft manufacturers report that they have been ordered three sets of landing gear for prototype aircraft. According to the terms of the contract, the first one must be handed over in 18 months. after the conclusion of the contract, and the other two are expected within the next one and a half years. The date of the signing of the agreement is unknown, but, most likely, it was the beginning or the middle of 2020.

Technical features

According to previous publications, the Calidus B-350 is a multipurpose combat training aircraft. Such a machine can really be used to train pilots. However, the technical appearance shows that the aircraft is primarily intended for striking ground targets.

The B-350 has a normal aerodynamic design. It has an elongated fuselage approx. 15 m. In the bow there is a propulsion system, and behind it is a tandem two-seater cabin. A low-lying, low-swept wing with a span of more than 16 m is used. The tail assembly is traditional, with a stabilizer and one keel. The landing gear developed by Charvát Group has a nose strut and two main ones under the wing. The maximum take-off weight reaches 9 tons.

As with the previous B-250, the airframe of the new aircraft is almost entirely made of composites. Due to this, it was possible to obtain an advantageous ratio of strength and weight. In particular, the saved weight of the airframe makes it possible to improve the possible flight characteristics and increase the combat load.

Against the background of other technology. Photo Secretprojects.co.uk

The attack aircraft received a Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127 turboprop engine with a capacity of 2600 hp. with a six-blade screw. The estimated flight performance has not yet been disclosed.

The aircraft must carry all the necessary flight and communication equipment in two cockpits. Probably, the equipment of the cabins is different: in one the pilot works, and the other is intended for the operator. An optical-electronic "ball" with day, night and rangefinder channels is suspended under the bottom. With its help, the crew can search for targets at any time of the day and use guided weapons of various types.

Due to the large size and mass of the structure, an increase in the payload and combat qualities is ensured. It was possible to place 14 suspension points under the wing. The maximum load exceeds 3800 kg. The exhibition model is "armed" with unguided rockets, air-to-air missiles and guided bombs, which are in service with the UAE Air Force. Holders with other types of weapons are shown separately.

Thus, the newest B-350 aircraft is significantly larger and heavier than the previous B-250, and also favorably differs from it in its increased combat potential. So, the older attack aircraft has a wing span of 12 m and a take-off weight of approx. 6 tons. Only seven suspension points with a total carrying capacity of 1,9 tons were placed under the wing and fuselage.

Advantages and disadvantages

The B-350 project can be considered another attempt to create an "anti-guerrilla" attack aircraft capable of effectively destroying ground targets in a local conflict. The project actively uses modern solutions and technologies, which gives a noticeable increase in the main characteristics and increases combat effectiveness. However, there are also obvious disadvantages.

Airplane side projection. Graphics Calidus LLC / Charvát Group

The main advantages of the new B-350 are related to the increase in size and overall weight, as well as the use of a more powerful engine. All this makes it possible to obtain acceptable flight characteristics, but at the same time to increase the combat load in terms of weight and quantity. Accordingly, an attack aircraft can destroy more targets in one sortie than other vehicles of the same class, including the older B-250. A big plus is the ability to use a wide range of weapons, incl. modern guided missiles and bombs.

The most important innovation of the B-350 project should be considered the built-in optoelectronic station. Due to it, the capabilities for review, search and defeat of targets are sharply increased. At the same time, the use of the ECO and the use of weapons are assigned to the pilot-operator, which reduces the overall workload on the crew and also has a positive effect on the results of combat work.

The obvious disadvantage of the B-350 and B-250 projects is the composite airframe. With all its advantages, this design does not correspond to the specifics of the work of attack aircraft. The "battlefield aircraft" is constantly at risk of injury or damage and can return from almost every sortie with holes. However, composite structures do not differ in maintainability, which will complicate the restoration of attack aircraft. How this problem is solved is a big question.

Commercial prospects

In general, the Calidus B-350 aircraft has significant advantages. He is quite capable of attracting potential customers and bypassing competitors in tenders. However, this machine has not even begun flight tests, and in addition, it was first shown just a few days ago. Accordingly, future buyers are just looking at the new attack aircraft and are waiting for it to be fully appreciated.

View from above. Graphics Calidus LLC / Charvát Group

The circle of potential customers is not yet known, although there have already been curious rumors. So, on specialized resources it was previously reported that the Calidus group applied for the Armed Overwatch competition from the US Special Operations Command. In May, the customer selected the participants in the program, and the B-350 did not get into it. It is not known whether this aircraft will be offered again to the Pentagon.

In the context of the prospects for the new B-350, one should recall the successes of the older B-250. This aircraft, presented in 2017, became the subject of a contract for the first time in 2019. The UAE Air Force has ordered a batch of 24 of these machines from Calidus LLC. Their production was planned to be established in the UAE, for which they were going to build a new plant. However, the launch of the enterprise and the start of production have not yet been reported. In addition, there are no other orders yet.

Perhaps, in the case of the B-350 project, the UAE armed forces will become the launch customer. Upon completion of flight tests, which will take some time, they can purchase up to several dozen new aircraft. It is possible that by this time its own aircraft plant will start working, and it will have to master the assembly of the second type of attack aircraft.

Thus, the Calidus B-2021 attack aircraft shown at Dubai Airshow-350 is of certain technical interest and is quite capable of attracting the attention of certain customers. However, contracts should be expected only in the future, and at the moment the main task of its creators is to test and fine-tune the design. Without these events, the new aircraft will have no commercial prospects.

And what is its "normality"? Heavy overgrowth ... Which obviously will not have high maneuverability and protection. MANPADS or "kamikaze drone" will land it at once

Such attack aircraft, up to the Cessna AS-208V Combat Caravan, involve the use of controlled APS - ATGM, UAB, NAR "Hydra" in a controlled version, in theory against militants (air defense in the form of MANPADS and ZU-23) should be enough.

This was in the early 90's when the topic was popular and there were many different projects. While in the USSR / Russia they did not have the opportunity for practical implementation due to lack of funds, but also real needs, for example, various Polish projects were from the very beginning a pipe dream aimed at extorting funds for the projects themselves from the budget

As you can see, Polish designers had a lot of imagination.

Cross out the ZAK and MANPADS, its normal height above the patrol area is 4 km +.

SAM - well, Duc, it will be used when the SAM has already burned out and cooled down, or they did not exist at all. This is the concept of a huge UAV, only with pilots. Such an aircraft flies for 4-5 hours in the area and observes at the optical station or even receives signals from conventional UAVs in the Orlan level area10 if the system itself is raised (well, that is, the board, like Tucano, for example, allows it). As soon as enemies are identified, bangs - he quickly spills them. At the same time, the goodies are lucky as a whole squadron of available UAVs for sale. A sort of aircraft arsenal for low-intensity conflicts. In the same Nigeria, for example.

For me, a technique that is limited by something is nonsense. What's the point in doing something that can't be used? For example, I am some kind of general of the "rebels", with some means. And the enemy began to use this plane. A natural and adequate reaction is to buy / ask / borrow a system that will shoot down this plane. That is, this "attack aircraft" is not an attack aircraft, since it cannot be used where there is resistance. Then the question arises, what's the point? This is money down the drain. My enemies bought this miracle, I shot down several, their general says attack, in return we will lose the remaining aircraft. And that's all. These planes for millions are not needed.

Why don't you like a 4-point UAV that hangs for 40 hours in the observation area and is able to drop the same bombs or missiles when targets are detected? In the absence of serious air defense at altitudes of 6-8 thousand meters, they can perform the same functions in complete safety with lower costs and risks for the crews.

Well, as indicated below Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, the Philippines and a bunch of other countries. This is a beefy Tucano with pronounced loitering-percussion functions.

And in such conflicts, it is better than the Su-25 and, in general, the 3rd generation jets (Su-17 / MiG, etc.) with cast iron for:
          1) He has a cheap flight hour, long loitering time.
          2) There is no excess speed and at the same time, there is a high efficiency of the squared maneuver (higher than the available shock UAVs).
          3) He has a gorgeous multi-mode optical station, better than on Bayraktar because it is heavier with analog filters on the SMU. And a separate dedicated operator. While the Su-25 pilots are forced to look for the target with their eyes, descending to the ground, and the Su-17 / MiGi21 / 23 to throw bombs here somewhere, the enemies said there from the ground. This machine slowly detects enemies in the optics, fixes and uses the optimal type of weapons, including bombs up to 500 kg. That is, if some UAV saves in front of the capital building, where the babakhs have just now run in, then this rattler will bury them there.

Again, did many Syrian or Iraqi broads shoot down planes with air defense systems? But they still had Cuba captured for example. In theory, this legend could be bought / restored. But it didn't work out. Only one Wasp was normally used, and that is because the calculation was screwed up.

The dimensions are large, the propeller-driven aircraft loaded with bonbs))) An excellent target. The same Sushki at least have speed, they flew in, worked on a tip and back, and the Rooks have more survivability. And this is essentially a "maize" with guns. I do not understand at all how you can not see such more UAVs as Bayraktar, or Apache helicopters, you look at the video, there is a pancake war, and the terrorists are like walking, blind, deaf. And a lot of drum turntables actually hang? Over the battlefield, where do you eat from 12,7 to 30 mm even without oil? And that's not counting RPGs, ATGMs and MANPADS. Yes, and something badly rifles go astray, that in Vietnam (where sky raders, despite MANPADS and anti-aircraft artillery, lived longer and better than cobras), that in Yemen (where turntables, reagents and drones fall almost constantly, and there are tractors, something all is not), that in Iraq during the battles against the Babakhs.
Actually, the turntables work either near the ground (and for some reason, the pilots do not like to hang in one place, depicting a target) at speed or from a great height. In both cases, the propeller-driven attack aircraft will cope with this no worse, and due to the higher speed, less than an hour, and simply due to how and where the engine is installed (in comparison with the turntable), it is even safer.

As for me, it is wrong to make both training and attack aircraft on the same type - the requirements are too different, to take the same composites - for training - just right, for combat - not a fountain. Of the same thing - except that the reinforced chassis and a good view forward - downward, it cannot be replaced by any electronics. An attempt to save money will not lead to good. And the fuel efficiency of the attack aircraft is not the main thing, the training one is much more priority.

Well, not only, the assortment of ATGMs is now large, it can be used from such a machine, but not from a single jet machine. And the effect is high in defeat

Only now a jet plane is harder to shoot down from the ground without training and equipment. And your "cheap" airplane is lighter. Such a saving)))

What to compare? A plastic target and a special plane? They want to prove to me that this plane is a good attack aircraft. I wrote above that this is a flying target, since it cannot act effectively when counteracting from the ground, that is, it not a stormtrooper, but just a plane with bombs and missiles. So what's the use of it? Of course, special attack aircraft can and do shoot down, but you must admit that the Su-24 (speed and altitude) and the Su-25 (the same speed and survivability) have much more chances than a propeller-driven composite aircraft? You personally, if a military pilot, what would you choose to fly over a war zone or a Su-25 or A-10? Or at least their closest counterparts, tactical aircraft from other countries?
For loitering, UAVs are much easier. And cheaper, since you do not need to cook and maintain two combat pilots.
And helicopters should not be discounted, they do not need a runway.

Such aircraft are a cheap replacement for the Attack Helicopter and the Attack Aircraft .... for local wars. Based on civilian (often sold on the open market, aggregates and spare parts)

    1. Is it worth it?)
    2. Time spent in the air?

And then right now it turns out that the Predator is cheaper, and the flight time is the same as that of the Su-25.

    How is Il armored?
    UP! wink
    plywood instead of composites
Surprisingly, glued with epoxy, which is also a composite and even now! hi
Only several times cheaper ... good

So how much of the savings on those composite would that be? There, the main price tag is not them.

The pilot costs money …… ..Su25 was shot down, Su24 was shot down… .3 people were killed. Bayraktars knocked about 13 pieces and all the operators are alive,

As cynical as it sounds, how much does it cost? Is it more expensive or cheaper than an airplane?

And now it is even more cynical: no matter how much the pilot costs, he will quickly retire and still have to spend money on a new one. Again, I am not encouraging this in the least, but purely mathematically moderate losses are quite acceptable.

How is a glider with a motor? a couple of million dollars ...... in the version with unguided weapons and armor + 0,5 million, with a suspended container and ATGM + 5-10 million. There is a path like the Mi24 to Mi28NM

pilots for such a pepelats are preparing for six months. It's not supersonic.
the device is controversial in concept. All the same, a pusher propeller is better for accommodating missiles. Gives more space and frees up the entire front end for guns or radar. Also bring the exhaust under the screw to reduce IR visibility.
composite is different for composite, but the cockpit must be armored at least from 12,7 mm. The thing is useful just in the niche between the "real" bomber and the helicopter. With a good flier and radar, helicopters can also drive. But this is about the concept, the Arabs turned out to be overgrown.

Looks like a counterfeit low-quality "clone" of IL-2 (well, or IL-10).
Nowadays, I think it will only be able to hammer the peacemen or the Papuans (before the first humanitarian aid with MANPADS).

Interesting pepelats. Competition in the light attack aircraft segment is growing.

Regarding MANPADS: a turboprop aircraft is not so trivial to capture, unlike a jet one. Their effectiveness will be reduced. Regarding composites: patches have been invented for a long time and are quite effective if the power structures are not damaged.

Take the Ju-87, put in retractable sandals and a turboprop engine - and you're done, you don't have to invent anything.

An attack aircraft with one engine, this is not ice. As the author wrote, the probability of hitting such a class of aircraft that iron targets on the ground is much higher than average. Hence, if the only engine is damaged, the aircraft will also be lost.

With such success, you can return the IL10, but with modern materials and equipment, cheap and creepy, when a couple of dozen weigh over you at the same time, continuously, and at night Po2 with thermal imagers.
