Objective limitations versus promised performance. Large-caliber rifle PG-14,5 "Nichny hizhak"

General view of the PG-14,5 rifle

The development and production of ultra-long-range high-precision rifles is a particularly complex technical task, which only a few enterprises in the world can solve. Several years ago, the Ukrainian industry announced that it had managed to create a new model of this kind - the PG-14,5 "Nichny Khizhak" rifle. Moreover, during its development, no complex technologies were used, and the design was based on available components.

The problem and its solution

In 2014, the Ukrainian army, which started a civil war, faced the problem of a lack of a mass of necessary military products, as well as the impossibility of obtaining them. In this regard, the mass production of various "ersatz" began in all areas, incl. in the field of large-caliber rifles. Several enterprises at once offered their samples of this kind, made on the basis of available components and ammunition.

The rifle or "infantry cannon" PG-14,5 "Nichny Khizhak" ("Night Predator") was developed by the Kiev plant "Mayak"; it was first presented in 2015. The task of simplifying and reducing the cost of development and production was solved due to the widespread use of parts from the so-called. auxiliary gun 2X35, as well as the common cartridge 14,5x114 mm. Subsequently, they began to use barrels from KPV machine guns.

The project was based on ready-made components, which were supplemented with several details of the new development. When forming the appearance of the product, several well-known technical solutions were used, due to which it was planned to obtain high tactical and technical characteristics. In particular, an effective firing range of 4 km was declared with an accuracy of 1-1,5 MOA. It was planned to use modern sighting systems and a silent firing device.

Objective limitations versus promised performance. Large-caliber rifle PG-14,5 "Nichny hizhak"
Detachable cannon 2X35 - base for the "Predator"

It was argued that in the near future the rifle will go into series, and then go to the troops. In addition, it was planned to bring it to the international market. However, the PG-14,5 has not yet been adopted by the Ukrainian army, and the successes abroad are mainly reduced to the interest of the exhibition visitors.

Specific appearance

From the point of view of design, the "Night Predator" is an ersatz rifle based on a self-loading insert gun for tank guns 2X35. In the course of such processing, the gun lost some of its key components and received new parts. As a result, the fire characteristics remained at about the same level, but some capabilities were lost.

The main PG-14,5 is a unit in the form of a 1330 m cannon barrel with a gas block and a gas engine tube above it. At the same time, the gas piston and disc retaining devices for installing the gun into the barrel of a tank gun were removed. Also, the gun lost its standard receiver with a movable bolt, ammunition supply, electric trigger, etc.

For the rifle, a simplified receiver has been developed in the form of a pipe of sufficient diameter, worn over the barrel shank. Under it is a small trigger casing with a pistol grip. A longitudinal rail is attached to the top of the box with a place for installing the sight and mounts for the butt.

The rifle is single-shot and has a rotary bolt that can be locked by turning with a side handle. To send the cartridge, the bolt is removed from the receiver. At the rear end of the bolt there is a T-shaped handle of the striker. The firing mechanism, apparently, is built according to the striker scheme and has the simplest design.

An adjustable buttstock is mounted on the rear rail. Due to its large size and weight, "Nichny hizhak" has three points of support. A bipedal bipod is installed in the middle part of the trunk. In this case, the trunk is below the attachment point of the bipod, which to some extent stabilizes weapon... There is an additional folding support under the trigger cover.

Compatibility of the rifle with various optical sights is declared, incl. night. The possible range and accuracy of fire depend on the type and characteristics of the sight.

The muzzle of the barrel has a thread for mounting a silencer. The latter is made in the form of a cylinder with a length of approx. 770 mm and a diameter of the receiver. It is alleged that thanks to this device, the sound of the shot is not audible at ranges from 700-800 m.

The total length of the PG-14,5 rifle in the firing position is approx. 2,5 m. The length without a silencer is reduced to 1,7 m. The weight of the product without a sight is 33 kg. The muzzle velocity of the bullet is 1050 m / s. Sighting range - up to 4 km. Depending on the range, the rifle is capable of penetrating personal protective equipment or armor of certain classes of vehicles.

Declared successes

In 2015, "Night Predator" passed factory tests, after which small-scale production began. Later it became known that a certain number of such products ended up in Donbass and were used in the “anti-terrorist operation”. Allegedly, rifles were used to destroy living targets and equipment at long range in all conditions and showed themselves from the very best side. However, the declared successes did not help the rifle enter service.

The developers say that the rifles were effective at a range of more than 3 km. At the same time, the thermal imaging sight and the silencer made it possible to work at any time of the day and not to unmask the position. In general, PG-14,5 receives the highest marks, in places similar to banal boast.

This year they announced the creation of an export version of the rifle called the PG-14.5 Dezert Snake. It is said to be adapted to the climate of Saudi Arabia, which is now set to be a launch customer. Several rifles were handed over to the Arabian army for study and testing. Positive forecasts were made, but nothing is known about the signing of a real contract.

Whether Saudi Arabia will order the Ukrainian ersatz rifle is a big question. Certain doubts are also caused by the ability of such a sample to interest other foreign customers. However, this does not stop the developers from praising their creation.

Objective limitations

In general, the Nichny Khizhak rifle is an interesting model, but the reasons for such interest are mostly negative - and do not correspond at all to the cheerful advertising and praise from the developers. This sample has a specific origin, which negatively affects its characteristics and potential. In addition, there are reasonable doubts about the veracity of claims about the capabilities of this rifle.

In 2014-15. the Ukrainian army suddenly realized its deplorable situation, which led to the emergence of a mass of artisanal and factory projects of ersatz weapons and equipment. The PG-14,5 rifle belongs to this conditional class. It was carried out on the basis of an existing insert gun, which was chosen not for its characteristics, but solely because of its availability. Obviously, this origin of the project imposes the most serious restrictions on its technical result.

So, for the "Night Predator" declared high characteristics of range and accuracy of fire, and the reliability of such data is questionable. The fact is that effective single shooting at 3-4 km makes special demands on the rifle, cartridge and related equipment. Obviously, the barrel from 2X35 or KPV, as well as the gross 14,5 mm cartridge, do not meet these requirements. The same is the case with other elements of the sniper complex.

Experiments with high-precision long-range shooting are well known. They use specialized weapons, originally created and manufactured for such tasks. Moreover, each shot is preceded by a long and complex preparation. The result of such events is new world records, confirmed in the prescribed manner. Ukrainian "achievements" with the PG-14,5 rifle are confirmed only by words.

With dubious prospects

Thus, the Mayak plant was able to convert the ready-made insert gun into a “sniper” large-caliber rifle, but the results of this project are questionable. Due to a number of design features, such weapons cannot show characteristics at the level of specially designed high-precision long-range rifles - despite all the assurances of the developers.

However, all this does not prevent Mayak from promoting its development, offering it to the Ukrainian and foreign armies. Whether it will be possible to get the desired orders is a big question. Any potential customer, having tested PG-14,5, will determine its real characteristics and draw the necessary conclusions that sellers are unlikely to be satisfied with.

In the context of the "Night Predator" and its supposed records, a lot of similar samples should be remembered. The fact is that the conversion of KPV machine guns into large-caliber long-range rifles in recent decades has been actively practiced by participants in local conflicts. Such a weapon copes with fire missions, but its owners do not boast of records for range and accuracy - probably due to their absence. However, such handicrafts do not enter the official market and therefore do not need advertising.

Algorithm for creating a "new" weapon:
      - We take the Soviet model.
      - Sculpt something around - maximum "glamor"
      - And the last one is an effective name.
Optics, really. But the rifle (taking into account modern realities) is by and large a DISPOSABLE.
One question - at WHAT distance is the muffler able to COMPLETELY suppress the sound? * All the same cartridge 14,5x114. And I do not believe in 1 MOA with such a cartridge at the stated distance.

That is understandable, some kulibins from "Mayak" decided to remake an inset cannon for manual use like a PTRS.
Apparently none of the "developers" even bothered to think about the convenience and how the calculation would go to position with this unit and prepare for firing.

From this, I recently saw a more or less adequate approach to the 14,5-mm sniper rifle from Kharkov chemists XADO.

They at least offer their sniper cartridge for 14,5 × 114, although judging by their video, the accuracy of gross 14,5 is quite enough for shooting at 1500 m at unarmored and lightly armored vehicles with ~ 1,5 MOA, but here it is more likely in the accuracy of the battle of a group of shots, high-precision shooting with single shots is out of the question.

      Handicraft.
We had problems with large bore rifles. The military said give us a large-caliber sniper rifle, the developers said give us a large-caliber sniper cartridge for which we will make a rifle, the cartridge developers said we had developed such a cartridge a long time ago and it all ended at the production workers. Those asked the question how many such cartridges do you need, when they heard the figure they said, with such scanty volumes, the production line will never pay off. All the same, the military pushed through the production workers.

Well, theoretically, a large-caliber sniper weapon is a popular and very practical thing. The only question is what does this product have to do with sniper weapons. Well, they probably want to compete at the expense of the price, which will be ten times less than for real rifles (however, almost all weapons from the post-Soviet space can compete only on this account)

I myself am not a local, I passed by. Not a sniper and finally civilian. Of course, in a long tunnel or airless space from 4 km away, the watermelon will be shattered. And in real field conditions, a target the size of an armored personnel carrier will fall from 4 km? Why a muffler at such a distance? In general, the topic of large-caliber rifles has been going on since the late 19th century, when they were called fortress rifles. Then came the anti-material rifles and the apogee of anti-material rifles. With their help, you can disable (note, do not destroy !!!) a modern tank for a trained shooter. Sighting devices, meteorological stations, thermal imagers during operation are not protected by armored latches, but passed through after being hit by a bullet at least requires replacement (if the device itself does not have to be changed). A large "gun" and cartridges for it (although a good sight has an order of magnitude higher than the piece of iron itself) costs several times the ATGM and the missiles themselves (tens of thousands of dolyars). Compared with the same recoilless type SPG-9, they have an advantage in range. it is not worth reading the whistle of the Ukrainians about accuracy at distances of 3-4 km. The bullet will fly in that direction, possibly further))))), only the barret gives an aiming one at the level of two km. dug up the sea. By the way, the anti-tank rifles were in great demand among the partisans in 43-44 years. When the Germans cleared the land along the railway tracks for 200-300 meters, the partisans shot steam locomotives with rifles (Saburov has a rather interesting description)

How in Ukraine they began to make sniper rifles from probably shot barrels is a mystery. There seems to be no production of our own barrels. request

This rifle will apparently be replaced with this
      "Snipex has released a 14,5mm anti-material rifle.

The Ukrainian company Snipex (part of the XADO Chemical Group), specializing in the development and production of large-caliber sniper rifles, has presented a new Alligator chambered for 14,5x114 mm.

About a year ago, the company launched the 14,5mm T-Rex rifle.

Both the T-Rex and the Alligator are bolt action rifles chambered for 14,5x114 mm and obviously have many common structural elements.

The main difference is that the T-Rex is a single-shot rifle, while the Alligator is a magazine rifle, which is powered by 5-round detachable box magazines.

The receiver of the Snipex Alligator model is made of steel, and the slide rails for the shutter movement are chrome-plated. The picatinny rail on the upper part of the receiver has an angle of inclination of 50 MOA.

The barrel 1200 mm long is made with chrome plating of the channel and chamber (8 grooves with a pitch of 419 mm). The muzzle velocity is 1000 m / s, the declared effective firing range is 3000 m. "

Inserted barrels have been and are being made, they are included in the delivery of the main tanks. The practical barrel resource is much more than 600 shots. No loss of accuracy. The ballistics of the bullet is comparable to that of the standard cumulative projectile. At least when working from a tank. With correct zeroing and alignment of the sight, the accuracy at ranges up to 2000 m is within half a meter.

However, there are also more monstrous products: Mechem NTW-20 (20 mm caliber, made in South Africa) and IST-23 (23 mm caliber, Azerbaijan). The PG-14,5 Night Predator rifle is equipped with a powerful bipod (cantilevered above the barrel) with shock absorbers attached to each rack. There's also a rear monopod on the weapon, and the stock looks AR-15 compatible.

At the same time, as far as I know, there are no 14,5mm sniper cartridges in nature. Unless, of course, South Africa, the Chinese or the Swiss have released something. And with conventional cartridges, it will not be possible to radically surpass the PTRD in accuracy. The latter, by the way, also weighs half as much. The author either forgot by the middle of the article what he had composed at the beginning, or, what is more likely, he pulled pieces from different articles on the Internet and did not even bother to reconcile them with each other.
At the beginning of the article, the car writes
The task of simplifying and reducing the cost of development and production was solved due to the widespread use of parts from the so-called. auxiliary gun 2X35, as well as the common cartridge 14,5x114 mm. Subsequently, they began to use barrels from KPV machine guns.

But later in the article "forgets" that the barrels from the cannon were used in early prototypes, and finally the rifle was created on the basis of the KPV machine-gun barrel (actually KPVT), which is quite often used for anti-material rifles.
In the middle of the article, the author, "forgetting" what he wrote at the beginning, continues the topic of the gun barrel.
From the point of view of design, the "Night Predator" is an ersatz rifle based on a self-loading detachable cannon for 2X35 tank guns.

The main PG-14,5 is a unit in the form of a 1330 m cannon barrel

The PG-14,5 rifle belongs to this conditional class. It was carried out on the basis of an existing insert gun.

He had already forgotten that at the beginning of the article he wrote that the rifle was finally created on the basis of a machine-gun, not a cannon barrel.
But by the end of the article, he himself begins to doubt that he wrote here.
Obviously, the barrel is from 2X35 or KPV

At the end of the article, he again returns to the initial version, at the same time confirming that the creation of the rifle took place along the typical path - using a machine gun barrel.
In the context of the "Night Predator" and its supposed records, a lot of similar samples should be remembered. The fact is that the conversion of KPV machine guns into large-caliber long-range rifles in recent decades has been actively practiced by participants in local conflicts. Such weapons cope with fire missions

Moreover, it confirms that "Such a weapon copes with fire missions."
What was the article about then, which is replete with constant "probably", "unlikely", "apparently" and so on, if a weapon of this type copes with its tasks?

Just the author of the "great specialist" in the field of weapons ... laughing so I composed ...
      For example, he writes this:
decided due to the widespread use of parts from the so-called. insert gun 2X35
"TN guns 2X35" laughing negative And who are the so-called. (so called) ?? Yes, such pseudo-weapons are only called a CANNON in an inset barrel! How many years he served in tank units ... and no one once called the inset barrels cannons! And it could not be otherwise - according to the documents, they were listed as "inserted trunks", and not some kind of cannon! Although now, on the Internet, there are publications of such "experts" ... fool At least inquired about the minimum caliber of the cannons!

The T-handle looks very glamorous. Immediately I recall the PTRD. lol There really the stock ended with a ring.
But for some reason the author did not mention the carriage scheme. Although it is visible with the naked eye. As well as about shock absorbers, obviously for damping the recoil impulse.

One question - at WHAT distance is the muffler able to COMPLETELY suppress the sound? * All the same cartridge 14,5x114.

This is most likely a flame arrester. Removes muzzle flash and prevents the outflow of powder gases to the sides, so as not to unmask the sniper position.
    Quote: knn54

And I do not believe in 1 MOA with such a cartridge at the stated distance.

Yes, there is no minute there. And it can't be. Not at any distance. The barrel is manufactured at ZiD by the rotary forging method. The bore is chrome-plated. It's okay for a machine gun, for a sniper rifle ... bullshit.
Well, the design itself. I very much doubt that with such a barrel length it is possible, IN PRINCIPLE, to obtain acceptable structural rigidity.
And as for the ammunition, I generally keep quiet.
No, you can shoot 4 km from this wunderwafele. Even hitting .... a target measuring 4x4 meters. wassat

Yes, this rifle did not go into the series - since it is a complete handicraft, but another Ukrainian-made rifle chambered for 14.5 went into the series and this is not handicraft, but quite modern and technological.

shock absorbers? bolted to the bipod? for damping recoil ??? belay then this hook must first be hooked onto something. but if they intend to hook it with a bipod, then why are shock absorbers if the bipod should extinguish the recoil? shorter than another Azov with a door peephole. request

This rifle is much cheaper than ATGM. I think it will be cheaper AND lighter than an 82mm mortar. Shooting from such at bunkers, machine-gun points, unarmored vehicles is the very thing. Knock out machine gunners from the rooftops, for example. A 14.5mm incendiary truck is enough for the eyes. Of course, not from 3 kilometers, but I think you can get into the jeep from one and a half kilometers from it. The presence of a silencer and optics makes this rifle even more attractive as an "anti-material" rifle, but certainly not a sniper one. In trench warfare, there is a use for this shushpankanone. When you are in position, you follow the enemy and shoot something that is not hidden. For example, an inadvertently leaning out truck or armored car (especially a homemade shaitan mobile), or, for example, spotted a machine-gun position or a bunker, but you can make a bobo for them with this rifle.
Firstly, it's cheaper than shooting with a pturse or a mortar. Secondly, artillery reconnaissance systems simply will not detect this shushpangever. And with a silencer BABAH will not be at all of the same level as from KPV or PTRD. I think a sensible weapon. Less accurate than barrets, but cheaper and more powerful. Is it possible to successfully shoot enemy personnel from it with 2 CM? I don't think that it will be good and accurate to hit single targets of the size of a person (although you don't need to hit the head, wherever you get from such a fool the brow is a corpse). But for firing points and unarmored and lightly armored vehicles - it will more than do.

-What is the accuracy of your rifle at 5 kilometers?
-Can get into the coin !!!!
    -????Come on ...
    - or maybe not, but maybe ...
Delirium is natural. Swaying lightly armored ones up to half a kilometer, but with such a weight and size, 1 operator will go away for one shot.

I wonder what is the fate of the 14,5 caliber in general? The KPVT is slowly being removed from service with the BRMD and BTR-80 and replaced with a 30mm autocannon. where else is it applicable? PGI and pillar ship installations?

This is not a machine gun, this is a PTR.
But with a katana in the form of a bayonet - it looks good. laughing With such a total length of the adversary's device, you can remotely prick without admitting to yourself.
The grenade launcher was only screwed on crookedly - a shot at exactly the katana would blow. Or this one is so conceived - with a shot from a grenade launcher, he also knocks down a katana and, together with a grenade, flies into the enemy (you look, maybe a katana will kill someone additionally).
I suppose this is the construction of a gloomy Sumerian engineer?

Shl by the way why the katana was screwed and not Svidomo Cossack saber?

I'm certainly not a "gunsmith" and it's kind of dumb for me to see, but can someone from the knowledgeable tell me ... In the photo, the butt attachment is higher than the recoil vector. Maybe there are some amma vsobacheny, but still somehow it does not look familiar.
