Not the most numerous, but an important component of the Russian aerospace forces are aircraft for long-range radar detection and control. Currently, the basis of such a fleet is made up of A-50 vehicles in the original version and after deep modernization. In addition, in the foreseeable future, aircraft of the next model A-100 with higher flight technical and operational characteristics are expected.

In the distant past

A promising AWACS aircraft under the designation A-50 with the Bumblebee radio complex has been developed since the late seventies. At the same time, the first prototypes appeared, and by the middle of the next decade, the aircraft was brought to operation in the units of the USSR Air Force. Then, in the second half of the eighties, the aircraft was modernized using an improved version of the Bumblebee RTK.

The production of A-50 airplanes and their equipment was carried out by several enterprises with the leading role of the Taganrog OKB im. Beriev. This organization was responsible for the integration of electronics and the production of serial machines. According to various sources, over the years of production, at least 30 aircraft were handed over to the customer.

During the nineties and two thousandths, the number of combatant and actively used A-50 was gradually reduced for objective reasons. According to IISS's The Military Balance, by 2011 only 20 aircraft remained in service. Later, in 2014, representatives of enterprises involved in the modernization project spoke about the presence of 22 aircraft in the troops, including equipment in storage.

The current state of the A-50 park is questionable. Officially, such numbers were not disclosed, and the latest reference book The Military Balance indicates the presence of only 9 combat aircraft. However, such data do not correspond news recent years and, most likely, are erroneous.

Modernization processes

At the beginning of the 50s, a program for the modernization of combatant A-50s was launched, which provided for the overhaul of platform aircraft and the upgrade of target equipment. Such a project received the A-2009U index and was successfully implemented by the end of the decade. In 50, the experienced A-XNUMXU passed the necessary tests, and soon an order for serial modernization of equipment appeared.

The modernization of AWACS aircraft was entrusted to the enterprises that had previously participated in their initial development. The repair and installation of new equipment was carried out by the Taganrog Scientific and Technical Complex named after V.I. Beriev, and the new RTK was created and supplied by the Vega concern.

The first serially modernized A-50U was handed over to the customer on October 31, 2011. In April 2013, the Air Force received a second aircraft in an updated configuration. The third aircraft commissioned in March 2014 was a board with its own name "Sergey Atayants" and a curious history... Until 2009, it was used as a prototype for state tests. Then the plane served as a flying laboratory and helped to improve the new radio-technical complex. And only a few years later the car was returned to the customer and put back into operation.

In 2017-19. the newly created Russian Aerospace Forces received three more modernized aircraft, one per year. The latest act of transfer at the moment was signed on March 28, 2019 - this was already the sixth updated A-50U.

Then it became known about the beginning of work on the seventh aircraft. According to the plans of that time, its modernization was supposed to take more than two years. The transfer was scheduled for 2021. In the future, this information was not specified, and news about the transfer of the new A-50U has not yet appeared. Perhaps the modernization will meet the schedule, and the aircraft will be returned to the Aerospace Forces at the very end of the year - "under the Christmas tree".

Update result

In the course of the current repair and modernization, the technical condition and the extension of the service life of the base platform in the form of the IL-76 are being restored. The main flight and operational characteristics remain at the same level, corresponding to the requirements of the Aerospace Forces and the tasks being solved.

A complete replacement of radio equipment is also being carried out. A-50U receives a modern digital RTK, including radar facilities, data processing systems, communication and control facilities, operator workstations, etc. The complex is built on a modern element base, due to which it differs in smaller dimensions and energy consumption. The growth of all basic characteristics is also ensured.

According to various sources, the target detection range has been increased to 400-600 km, depending on their types. The number of tracked objects in the air, on land and on the water is unknown, but it was reported that in comparison with the A-50, this parameter increased several times.

Reducing the volume for the target equipment made it possible to improve the working conditions of the crew. The pilots and operators now have a recreation room with a buffet and the necessary amenities at their disposal. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to increase the time of duty in the air without prejudice to the flight and "tactical" crew.

New generation

At least since the beginning of the tenth years, the development of a new AWACS aircraft under the designation A-100 with RTK Premier has been underway. The project again involved TANTK them. Beriev and the Vega concern. The aim of the work is to create an aircraft on a modern platform with a promising RTK showing improved performance.

A modern modification of the Il-100MD-76A military transport aircraft was chosen as the base for the A-90. Due to this, the required level of flight performance is achieved with an increase in economic and operational indicators. Vega has developed a fundamentally new radio-technical complex with improved characteristics. The exact parameters are not disclosed, but it is argued that "Premier" surpasses all modern developments in its class, both domestic and foreign.

In November 2014, the serial Il-76MD-90A was sent to TANTK for the construction of the first prototype A-100 aircraft. Last year it was reported about the imminent construction of a second prototype. In addition, to test the RTK, a flying laboratory was built on the basis of one of the existing A-50s.

Flight tests of the A-100LL laboratory began in October 2016. In November of the following year, the first flight of a full-fledged prototype A-100 took place on a new base. The tests continue to this day, and in the coming years they will be joined by another flight specimen. Testing and testing of equipment is planned to be completed in 2024.

In the same year, it is planned to start mass production. The new A-100 will enter the troops and supplement the existing A-50 and A-50U. As the resource depletes, the aircraft of the existing types will be decommissioned, and gradually the Premier will become the basis of the AWACS grouping. However, even the approximate timing of such a replacement is not yet known.

Development continues

According to various sources, at present, the Russian Aerospace Forces has about two dozen AWACS aircraft of the A-50 family. This number includes six modernized A-50Us, as well as at least a dozen A-50s in the basic configuration, awaiting repair and renovation. In addition, several machines are reported in storage, the future of which is unknown.

Experimental aircraft A-100 "Premier" at the beginning of tests, 2017 Photo by "Rostec"

The technique of two modifications is actively involved in solving problems in the framework of various exercises and real operations. So, in recent years, it has been regularly reported on the work of the A-50 (U) aircraft to support the operation in Syria. The planes have repeatedly participated in air parades.

The prospects of our group of AWACS aircraft are clear and understandable. In the foreseeable future, the industry will continue to modernize cash A-50 according to a new project with the letter "U". Thanks to this, they will receive new opportunities, and will also be able to continue serving for a long time. At the same time, in the middle of the decade, the Aerospace Forces should receive the first A-100 aircraft of a new construction with improved characteristics and, which is also important, with a full resource.

Thus, the state and prospects of the Russian fleet of long-range radar surveillance and control aircraft are generally not a cause for concern. Even in the most difficult period of history, the Air Force managed to preserve most of the built equipment, and in the last 10-15 years every effort has been made to update it and extend its service life. Now we are talking not only about preserving and improving the available aircraft, but also about obtaining completely new ones with the most serious advantages. This means that the Aerospace Forces and the armed forces will retain the ability to monitor the situation from the air within a radius of hundreds of kilometers.

What are the prospects. If not a single AWACS aircraft have been produced since 1991. Now in service with only 9 machines 5 A-50 and 4 A-50U. Mostly they stand in the parking lots of the Ivanovo (Severny) airfield.
The A-100 aircraft were planned to begin deliveries to the Air Force back in 2016, but the first sample with a mock antenna took off only in 2017. What is the state of work are silent.

Well, how would it take time to solve any problem, S-350/400/500 or T-90m are examples of that, in a couple of years T-14 and Su-57 will be added. The S-500 is all fiction, "and now he is already writing" First of all, the S-500 is evidence that our defense-industrial complex and our design ideas are developing. This is a completely new complex that continues the line of the famous S-125, S -200, S-300, and so on ".. Although within the framework of AWACS, I would bet on the UAV Helios

funny ... but he got to do with it?) If we take in fact, in fact, the intensification of ALL new armaments began with him, before him, if something new appeared, it was only due to a foreign order ... So the question is why under Shoigu for 7 years, nothing fired from new products?

Well, the main thing is to choose the right terms. Let's say expected (in the future) characteristics of A-100 exceed current Features current American AWACS aircraft. Or something like that. At the same time, it is clear that by the time the A-100 is put into real operation, the likely enemy will also drive something new.

I heard that the development of the A-50 was too expensive for the state. Therefore, when developing the A-100, they decided to follow the fashionable way of creating digital twins to reduce costs. Judging by the fact that the deadlines are being delayed, something has not grown there.

It's not all bad. There are 7 modernized A-50Us in service, and work on modernizing the A-50 continues.

It is more efficient, cheaper and faster than building a new aircraft.

The A-50U is equivalent to the A-100 in terms of capabilities. The only difference between them is that the A-100 is a new aircraft, and the A-50U is an old one that has undergone major overhaul.

In addition, our construction of new transport Il-76 is going on hard, and if we still load the plant with AWACS planes, then we will not have time to do anything at all.

If you do not compare with the Americans, then the abstract figures of combat-ready aircraft will not evoke an understanding in what deep place we are. A strange bias towards fighters and bombers, with complete despondency in the field of PLO, tankers and AWACS suggests that we again think that the enemies are fools, and we won such times.

"If you do not compare with the Americans, the abstract figures of combat-ready aircraft will not evoke understanding."

The fact is that we have a defense doctrine, we rely more on ground-based radars, including mobile ones. The north of the European part of Russia is also not badly covered, plus the MiG-31 and A-50 in Ivanovo. In addition to Syria, we have nowhere to send them. America has where - they are fighting everywhere or preparing to fight. The strategic nuclear forces are the main guarantor of our security, and we can cope with Ukraine without the A-100. Putin understands well that no one wants to fight with a country like Russia. Easier to blow up from the inside. Therefore, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB (with border guards) allocate no less money than the army.

If we proceed from the fact that we have about 6 thousand km of sea border in the Pacific Ocean and taking into account the need for at least a control center for anti-ship missiles and performance characteristics, it turns out that only there we need 6 aircraft for simultaneous duty. But in fact it is 2-3 times more.
And that's just the Pacific Ocean.
If you think about it, then you need to have at least 40-50 pieces. to a minimum. it's just to cover the borders. And we also need separate ones to cover certain regions of the country or for expeditionary forces.

And what, AWACS is not needed for defense? Without AWACS, air defense gives low altitudes to the enemy - because the viewing range of ground-based radars on MV is globally limited by the radio horizon, and locally - by terrain folds and other things that obscure the field of view.

Ground-based radars in Russia are also over-the-horizon, the principle of reflection of radio waves from the ionosphere - "Container" is used. Range 3000 km, accompanying thousands of objects.

I would like to express my concern that there is no sense in AWACS if there are not enough tankers for them. The whole point is in the continuity of observation, and not how in Syria they drove the side to Khmeim, shone it against the background of concrete and drove it back.
And we have a problem with refuelers. How many are there -12? For all!!! For the first persons of the country who need to be saved if anything, for the operational command, for strategists, for heavy bombers of the Tu-22m type (since they have attached a barbell back, you need to use it) for complex Air Force operations with a bunch of coordinated actions. So let's make another 10 A-50m - my safety will not increase in any way, tk. they will not be able to fly continuously. And when you mean that the Americans have 450-500 tankers ...

Over-the-horizon radars distinguish everything perfectly, I remember once about 5 years ago they stopped missile launches in the direction of Syria from the Mediterranean Sea, spotted the F-35 on the day when the Ukrainian side was shot down in Iran.

Radar horizons have a drawback - they cannot see up close, but this is blocked by conventional radars.

        Do not carry nonsense !!!

The Kremlin is not intimidated by anything and is pursuing its policy without looking back to the West - Georgia was forced to peace, Crimea was given the opportunity to calmly decide on its future, ISIS was destroyed in Syria.

And the priority for the Kremlin is the balanced development of the armed forces and the navy as a whole, and not one direction and not at the cost of impoverishing the population, as it was in the USSR.

We need to soberly assess the possibilities of the budget of Russia and the Ministry of Defense, otherwise you need to modernize the old A-50 and you want the new A-100, and even on the basis of the Il-96 and also an analogue of the Yak-44 and PLO planes and tankers, come on right away and also definitely a UAV like the Turks (although it already has - Orion).

And the strategic forces are nonsense of Boreas, Sarmatians, Poseidons. So what do you think ?! ))

No not like this!!! Strategic forces are the basis of the country's security and therefore they are a priority, and everything else is also important, but at the same time, the rationality and efficiency of the use of resources has not been canceled.

Why make a new AWACS aircraft if it is possible for less money and time from the old one to make the same in terms of capabilities or very close to it ?! There is no need, so they are modernizing the A-50, and not making them from scratch.

As all the A-50s are being modernized, they will do so on the new A-100 aircraft, and after that they will be engaged in anti-submarine and all other aircraft.

      And here are my questions:

The questions are correct, besides, there are ready-made aircraft, the same Tu-204 is about 50 in storage, you just need to supply the equipment, the aircraft themselves are ready-made and practically free, and making a mass AWACS aircraft out of it will be much cheaper than building a dozen A-100s. under which there are no planes.
The Tu 204 is a magnificent aircraft, it can patrol up to 10 hours, its engines are the same as on the new Il-76MD-90A, the resource on these aircraft remains enormous. If in the future we carry out a remotorization and install new PD-14 engines, then the patrol time will still increase, along with economy.
This project is good from all sides, and on good terms it would be the most reasonable way out for our country, but there is one problem, respected people will not be able to cut money off, because this project cannot be implemented under this government.
In the West, small aircraft such as Hawkeye or on the basis of comm liners are intensively used in tactical operations with fighters.

We had a similar Yak-44 project and its renewal would also be reasonable, on its basis it would be possible to create not only a very necessary small AWACS aircraft, but also a version of a sea-based AWACS aircraft for our TAVKR. On the basis of the Yak-44, it would be possible to build a civilian version of the aircraft, to replace the An-2, An-28 and L-410, this would significantly reduce the cost of the aircraft.

If we add 6-8 Yak-44 AWACS aircraft to the current air defense system of Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan, add the S-350 division and a couple of Su-30SM2 squadrons, then the air defense of these islands will become practically impregnable. The S-400 and S-350 complexes will become really long-range and will control the airspace for hundreds of kilometers around, including low-flying targets, which is impossible to do without AWACS aircraft. It is difficult to imagine the possibility of air patrolling on these islands by A-50U or A-100 aircraft, it would be a very ruinous attraction for our country.

Hawkeye need not be repeated ... for the ground air force they make AWACS on the basis of jets, a log on the back and forward. The same SSZH100 in some versions can fly up to 6000 km ...

Because on the A-50 there is a Soviet base and groundwork. And on the basis of the Il-96 will have to design an AWACS aircraft from scratch. There, one EM-compatibility will drive designers into a stupor for a long time.

      3. Why are the AWACS aircraft of less weight (commercial) such as Tu204 or SSZh or MS-21 not being tested? With a "log on the back" or embedded systems?

See paragraph 2. Plus SSJ and MS-21 are critically tied to imports - and if a military aircraft is created on their basis, the release of a basic civilian model will also fall under sanctions.

Let's proceed from the fact that the Il96 and 76 make one KB, or a similar size and use a similar BREO and turbojet engine. Therefore, the work is quite capable. On the issue of the "plate" there are different schemes and without it. As for the rest, on the basis of the COL, you can try non-military systems and work out the application and work on the localization is underway on the CAL ……. MC21 yes, but there are ready-made Tu204….

And on this fuselage with this avionics, we put a heavy bracket with a rotating plate / sausage and a powerful emitter, the side petals of which will inevitably hit the aircraft. smile

      And here are my questions:
      1. Why, during modernization, do not install AFAR antennas on the A50?

There is no AFAR in the RF. Except perhaps the S-500 radar, but it is the first AFAR in service with the RF Armed Forces.
Although there were talks about using AFAR on the A-100 10 years ago, I wanted to hide three canvases under the fairing. Fixed canvases.

      2. Why is the IL-96 "trolley" not used for AWACS?

And who needs such a "Godzila" and where?
First, there are specific runway and maintenance requirements.
Secondly, they simply do not exist. Several piece boards for the special squad.
Thirdly, the IL-96 is too expensive, gluttonous and demanding in operation.
Fourthly, the Il-76 can, if necessary, land and take off from a dirt strip, and its complete unification with VTA aircraft makes its operation and airframe repairs easy.
      Quote: Zaurbek
      3. Why are the AWACS aircraft of less weight (commercial) such as Tu204 or SSZh or MS-21 not being tested? With a "log on the back" or embedded systems?

There is no technical capability, there is no desire and understanding by the top leadership of the Country and the Army about the need for such machines ... and there is no normally organized production, even a base for such specialized aircraft. Of these platforms, only the Super-Jet-100 "is mass-produced, and even then with foreign engines, which excludes its use in the RF Armed Forces.

      4. Not seen or heard about something based on Il114.

Such an aircraft does not exist, for even a demo model is assembled from an old hull (early 90s), experimental and critically unprepared engines and some kind of avionics. There is nothing else on this plane. And there won't be - there are NO engines for them.

They just buy it - in the USA or Israel. China is working on this - it has fitted a "mushroom" on the back of an An-12 clone and chases them in series, and is preparing a deck ship.

To bet, you must have a WHERE TO PLACE.
There is nothing to bet on.
There is no need to build new desires. There is a mess at the Taganrog NPP. Vega failed everything, not only the topic of AWACS ... The military does not pedalize - the VKS is commanded by the infantry, they simply do not understand ... Just as they do not understand in the Fleet, which is also commanded (the fleets are subordinate to districts, except for the Northern Fleet, which is the district itself) ...
Aircraft AWACS is not just a flying radar, it is a Complex - aviation, radar, RTR, automated control system, communication systems, navigation, encryption, etc., etc. ... And in the Russian Federation Voronezh Aviapribor was ditched ... Production was partially transferred to Ulyanovsk, but he does not cope ... both qualitatively and quantitatively ...
SERDYUKOV now rules the aircraft industry - unsinkable, senseless and merciless. Serd.kovschina .... "optimization" ... that is, the destruction of aircraft enterprises and the curtailment of aircraft production. As a result, there has been a sharp reduction in the number of aircraft and helicopters produced per year.
And if aircraft production is being phased out, why are combat control planes?
          Sabotaging everything and everyone.
Excuse / justification - "Vega" when designing radar and RTK for the A-100, relied on the American radio component base (! belay ) ... and then "unexpectedly" - sanctions.
And another question - where to build these planes, determine? Whom to Subordinate? Who is responsible for this?
The experience of operating and using such aircraft in the modern Russian Federation ... not particularly. Initially, they were built (in the USSR) for air defense - lighting of the air situation at WWII ... And now air defense in the Aerospace Forces, and the command of the Aerospace Forces ... INFANTRY.
          Who just doesn't understand.
          Therefore, it does not require.
          And everyone is good.

The Voronezh plant where avionics were made (SVS, SOS, SPKR, LDPE and other systems for all aircraft) was an independent enterprise. He also developed these systems. For example SPKR-M2 for the Su-34.
Or SOS-2-7-3 for the Su-30SM. SOS-160 was made for the Tu-5. And the DAU's angle of attack sensors for aviation are also its profile.
In Ulyanovsk, where the nomenclature was transferred, there were previously 2 plants - Utes and the Ulyanovsk Instrument Design Bureau. Then they merged into one under the guidance of the latter.
But this is no longer an independent organization, but a structure of KRET. With all that it implies.
They cannot even reproduce products of 30 years ago. Do you want her? Give tens of millions more to their Moscow office.
They don't design anything new there. And the displays for the Su-30 / Su-34 are just a Japanese / Korean LCD matrix with a polarizer and a domestic case. For 2 million rubles!
And I can also tell you about a watch for the Su-34 from a Moscow factory for 480 thousand rubles! (see Ed. 781) Given that the cost of their production is 20-30 times lower.

We need three types of AWACS in size - small, medium and large. There are large ones - A50 (Y), but there are no small and medium ones. Small is, for example, based on Yak-40, or IL-114, medium based on Superjet or MS-21. In terms of quantity, fifty pieces are needed. Then we will get closer to normal air control. In principle, at least 4-5 aircraft should be in the air according to the current military situation, at least one for each side of the world. The question about the shipborne AWACS also set my teeth on edge. It is generally universal for our country, with the ability to land on a short runway. Why not make an AWACS based on a seaplane?
For example, I flew up to England, stayed on duty for a day or three and went home to replace.
I also have the opinion that the situation with AWACS and U planes is disgusting.
