State and prospects of the AWACS aircraft fleet in the Russian Aerospace Forces
Not the most numerous, but an important component of the Russian aerospace forces are aircraft for long-range radar detection and control. Currently, the basis of such a fleet is made up of A-50 vehicles in the original version and after deep modernization. In addition, in the foreseeable future, aircraft of the next model A-100 with higher flight technical and operational characteristics are expected.
In the distant past
A promising AWACS aircraft under the designation A-50 with the Bumblebee radio complex has been developed since the late seventies. At the same time, the first prototypes appeared, and by the middle of the next decade, the aircraft was brought to operation in the units of the USSR Air Force. Then, in the second half of the eighties, the aircraft was modernized using an improved version of the Bumblebee RTK.
The production of A-50 airplanes and their equipment was carried out by several enterprises with the leading role of the Taganrog OKB im. Beriev. This organization was responsible for the integration of electronics and the production of serial machines. According to various sources, over the years of production, at least 30 aircraft were handed over to the customer.
During the nineties and two thousandths, the number of combatant and actively used A-50 was gradually reduced for objective reasons. According to IISS's The Military Balance, by 2011 only 20 aircraft remained in service. Later, in 2014, representatives of enterprises involved in the modernization project spoke about the presence of 22 aircraft in the troops, including equipment in storage.

The current state of the A-50 park is questionable. Officially, such numbers were not disclosed, and the latest reference book The Military Balance indicates the presence of only 9 combat aircraft. However, such data do not correspond news recent years and, most likely, are erroneous.
Modernization processes
At the beginning of the 50s, a program for the modernization of combatant A-50s was launched, which provided for the overhaul of platform aircraft and the upgrade of target equipment. Such a project received the A-2009U index and was successfully implemented by the end of the decade. In 50, the experienced A-XNUMXU passed the necessary tests, and soon an order for serial modernization of equipment appeared.
The modernization of AWACS aircraft was entrusted to the enterprises that had previously participated in their initial development. The repair and installation of new equipment was carried out by the Taganrog Scientific and Technical Complex named after V.I. Beriev, and the new RTK was created and supplied by the Vega concern.
The first serially modernized A-50U was handed over to the customer on October 31, 2011. In April 2013, the Air Force received a second aircraft in an updated configuration. The third aircraft commissioned in March 2014 was a board with its own name "Sergey Atayants" and a curious history... Until 2009, it was used as a prototype for state tests. Then the plane served as a flying laboratory and helped to improve the new radio-technical complex. And only a few years later the car was returned to the customer and put back into operation.
In 2017-19. the newly created Russian Aerospace Forces received three more modernized aircraft, one per year. The latest act of transfer at the moment was signed on March 28, 2019 - this was already the sixth updated A-50U.
Then it became known about the beginning of work on the seventh aircraft. According to the plans of that time, its modernization was supposed to take more than two years. The transfer was scheduled for 2021. In the future, this information was not specified, and news about the transfer of the new A-50U has not yet appeared. Perhaps the modernization will meet the schedule, and the aircraft will be returned to the Aerospace Forces at the very end of the year - "under the Christmas tree".
Update result
In the course of the current repair and modernization, the technical condition and the extension of the service life of the base platform in the form of the IL-76 are being restored. The main flight and operational characteristics remain at the same level, corresponding to the requirements of the Aerospace Forces and the tasks being solved.
A complete replacement of radio equipment is also being carried out. A-50U receives a modern digital RTK, including radar facilities, data processing systems, communication and control facilities, operator workstations, etc. The complex is built on a modern element base, due to which it differs in smaller dimensions and energy consumption. The growth of all basic characteristics is also ensured.
According to various sources, the target detection range has been increased to 400-600 km, depending on their types. The number of tracked objects in the air, on land and on the water is unknown, but it was reported that in comparison with the A-50, this parameter increased several times.
Reducing the volume for the target equipment made it possible to improve the working conditions of the crew. The pilots and operators now have a recreation room with a buffet and the necessary amenities at their disposal. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to increase the time of duty in the air without prejudice to the flight and "tactical" crew.
New generation
At least since the beginning of the tenth years, the development of a new AWACS aircraft under the designation A-100 with RTK Premier has been underway. The project again involved TANTK them. Beriev and the Vega concern. The aim of the work is to create an aircraft on a modern platform with a promising RTK showing improved performance.
A modern modification of the Il-100MD-76A military transport aircraft was chosen as the base for the A-90. Due to this, the required level of flight performance is achieved with an increase in economic and operational indicators. Vega has developed a fundamentally new radio-technical complex with improved characteristics. The exact parameters are not disclosed, but it is argued that "Premier" surpasses all modern developments in its class, both domestic and foreign.
In November 2014, the serial Il-76MD-90A was sent to TANTK for the construction of the first prototype A-100 aircraft. Last year it was reported about the imminent construction of a second prototype. In addition, to test the RTK, a flying laboratory was built on the basis of one of the existing A-50s.
Flight tests of the A-100LL laboratory began in October 2016. In November of the following year, the first flight of a full-fledged prototype A-100 took place on a new base. The tests continue to this day, and in the coming years they will be joined by another flight specimen. Testing and testing of equipment is planned to be completed in 2024.
In the same year, it is planned to start mass production. The new A-100 will enter the troops and supplement the existing A-50 and A-50U. As the resource depletes, the aircraft of the existing types will be decommissioned, and gradually the Premier will become the basis of the AWACS grouping. However, even the approximate timing of such a replacement is not yet known.
Development continues
According to various sources, at present, the Russian Aerospace Forces has about two dozen AWACS aircraft of the A-50 family. This number includes six modernized A-50Us, as well as at least a dozen A-50s in the basic configuration, awaiting repair and renovation. In addition, several machines are reported in storage, the future of which is unknown.
The technique of two modifications is actively involved in solving problems in the framework of various exercises and real operations. So, in recent years, it has been regularly reported on the work of the A-50 (U) aircraft to support the operation in Syria. The planes have repeatedly participated in air parades.
The prospects of our group of AWACS aircraft are clear and understandable. In the foreseeable future, the industry will continue to modernize cash A-50 according to a new project with the letter "U". Thanks to this, they will receive new opportunities, and will also be able to continue serving for a long time. At the same time, in the middle of the decade, the Aerospace Forces should receive the first A-100 aircraft of a new construction with improved characteristics and, which is also important, with a full resource.
Thus, the state and prospects of the Russian fleet of long-range radar surveillance and control aircraft are generally not a cause for concern. Even in the most difficult period of history, the Air Force managed to preserve most of the built equipment, and in the last 10-15 years every effort has been made to update it and extend its service life. Now we are talking not only about preserving and improving the available aircraft, but also about obtaining completely new ones with the most serious advantages. This means that the Aerospace Forces and the armed forces will retain the ability to monitor the situation from the air within a radius of hundreds of kilometers.
