Experienced armored car VPK-59095S at the training ground

Both in the past and now, the idea of building armored vehicles based on commercial units is very popular. Several years ago, the Russian "Military Industrial Company" made the first attempt to develop such a project, which resulted in the armored car VPK-59095S "VPK-Ural". This machine has already demonstrated technical and economic advantages and even reached the series.

First try

The promising armored car VPK-59095S was first shown at the Army-2019 forum. Then the management of "MIC" said that this project is the first attempt by the company to create a protected car based on existing commercial units. Ural trucks and armored cars were selected as the source of such products.

The main units of the chassis, power plant and transmission, etc. are borrowed from the Ural brand. The building and other systems "VPK" developed independently, incl. borrowing parts from the "Athlete" armored car. This approach to design made it possible to speed up and simplify the development process, and also had a positive effect on the economic and operational characteristics of the finished armored car.

Driver's seat

"VPK-Ural" was positioned as a multipurpose armored vehicle capable of transporting people or carrying various equipment and weapons. In the future, it became known about the possibility of creating new modifications, providing for a serious reworking of the armored hull and changing the internal equipment.

It is curious that the new armored car is not legally a military product. Due to this, as noted by "VPK", such products can be supplied to the customer directly, without a number of specific procedures.

On trial and in the series

In March 2020, the leadership of the "VPK" announced that the new armored car VPK-59095S is undergoing preliminary tests. At the same time, the project has already interested an unnamed foreign buyer. Based on his needs, he ordered a smaller version of an armored car with an interior for 8 seats instead of the original 12. By the time of publication news such a machine was built and sold to the customer.

View of the salon through the aft door

In October last year, it became known that four experimental vehicles from the "military-industrial complex" took part in the strategic exercises "Kavkaz-2020". This technique, incl. armored car "VPK-Ural", had to show itself in conditions as close as possible to real operation. Soon it was reported that all four types of equipment successfully coped with the tests and, in general, confirmed the calculated characteristics. Taking into account the data and experience obtained, the armored cars were planned to be improved and brought into full compliance with the requirements of the Ministry of Defense.

Shortly after such tests, at the end of October 2020, "MIC" announced the imminent start of the series and export. The buyer of the armored car was supposed to be an unnamed country in the Middle East. The signing of the contract and the transfer of the first machines were expected before the end of the year. The development company noted that "VPK-Ural" has already passed tests at the customer's site. The test was carried out at the test site and in the hot desert climate. All specifications have been confirmed; moreover, they managed to get a top speed of 130 km / h.

On November 1, 2021, "VPK" spoke about the development of a new modification of the armored car, which has already gone into production. At the request of a foreign customer, a car with a shortened body and side body was developed. By now, the company has built a batch of such pickups and is ready to send it to the buyer.

Technical features

The armored vehicle VPK-59095S "VPK-Ural" is a multipurpose vehicle on a two-axle all-wheel drive chassis with an armored body that accommodates a single-volume cabin and is suitable for installing additional equipment. The length of the armored car is 6,5 m with a width of 2,55 mm and a height of 2,8 m. The total weight is 14,5 tons.

Under the armored hood is a turbocharged diesel engine YaMZ-536 with a capacity of 360 hp. Customers are offered an automatic 6-speed or manual 5-speed transmission. The chassis has a spring suspension borrowed from the Ural-53099 armored car. Due to the chassis, built on commercial components, the armored car is capable of speeds of at least 100 km / h, overcome various obstacles and fords.

The hull as a whole was designed specifically for the new armored car; side doors are borrowed from the "Athlete" car. The hull received level 5 ballistic protection according to GOST R 50963. The habitable compartment can be reinforced up to class 6a. Mine protection includes a double V-shaped bottom and can carry up to 6 kg under the wheel or under the hull.

In the basic version, demonstrated since 2019, the VPK-Ural armored car has a large interior for 12 seats, including the driver. There are four forward facing "mine" seats with access through side doors. Behind the second row there are 8 more seats, four at each side. These seats are accessed through the aft door or through the passage in the second row.

Shown the other day, the pickup armored car receives a shortened body with two rows of seats. A side body is installed in the vacant space above the rear axle. Perhaps other equipment can be installed instead.

Depending on the needs of the customer, the VPK-59095S can receive various equipment and weapons. In particular, two hatches are provided on the roof with the possibility of mounting a machine gun or a grenade launcher. There are armored shields next to the hatches. Due to the re-equipment of internal volumes, it is possible to create command-staff, ambulances and other vehicles. Also, an armored car can carry communication devices, electronic warfare, etc.

Successes and prospects

The "Military Industrial Company" is actively working on the creation of promising armored vehicles, and in the recent past has developed another similar vehicle with the index VPK-59095C. It shows high tactical and technical characteristics, and the growth of operational and economic indicators is provided by the use of commercial components. In addition, significant modernization potential has been laid.

Pickup "VPK-Ural" of the new batch

As it is now clear, such decisions have fully justified themselves. The resulting armored vehicle "VPK-Ural" in the basic version has successfully passed the full cycle of tests on the territory of an unnamed foreign customer. The machine confirmed the design characteristics and became the subject of the first order. Also, armored pickup trucks were manufactured, tested and put into series for a foreign buyer.

The prospects of the VPK-59095S in the context of the rearmament of the Russian army are still unknown. The vehicle has been tested in major exercises and has received a good rating, but no other reports have been received yet. Perhaps the armored car is currently being tested and fine-tuned, according to the results of which it will receive a recommendation for adoption. At the same time, he may be of interest not only to the army, but also to other structures in need of wheeled armored vehicles. It is possible to order machines of several modifications at once.

However, in order to get into the army or power structures, "VPK-Ural" will have to pass all the necessary tests and confirm compliance with the customer's requirements. In addition, it will be necessary to show advantages over other domestic armored cars of its class. It is quite possible that it is the commercial components from Ural that will become this advantage.

From this list, only machines of the Typhoon family are equal to this machine, the rest can not even be considered, in the matter of explosion safety they are far behind

Unfortunately, cars of this family are many times more expensive. An exception, perhaps, is the shrunken version of the Typhoon-Airborne Forces - due to the use of only domestic components and a simplified suspension.

What is better - to equip part of the grouping with super-expensive and good vehicles, or to equip the entire grouping with machines that are slightly worse, but cheaper?
Moreover, the difference in performance characteristics between Typhoon-K 4x4 and Ural-MIC is unlikely to be very large, and the difference in price, most likely, is several times.

Depends on the equipment. For example, typhoons 6x6, according to the developer, have several classes of protection. In the base - at the level of the BTR-82A, and at the maximum - from 30 mm in the forehead. In terms of mines, the APC is sooo much inferior to them. And he has less reserve.

Not more expensive than the lives of other soldiers of the same unit. When we have MRAP (Typhoon-K 6x6), without any weapons, are shoved into the army at the price of 2 cannon armored personnel carriers, then the automatic question will arise, who will drive a tent KAMAZ, and who will be in the darkness? And most importantly, how to perform a combat mission?

But our army does not need such highly protected vehicles ... WHY?

      1. Because it's expensive - these are not Pokémon for you, especially when you can turn even a sensible concept of a Pokémon (a booked bonnet truck) into an absurdity (booked WITHOUT CAP) for the sake of your wallet.
      2. Because there are lobbyists - KAMAZ (under Rostec and, as a result, under the state), but this is a commercial enterprise.
      3. Because there is a Zoo: Typhoons (5 types), Patrols (2 types), Tiger (and his replacement - Athlete) + Pokemon.
      4. Because the concept of light infantry on armored cars is underestimated and not developed in our country, but as the thunder breaks out, Pokémon are remembered.

Ideally, you should spit on everything and first work out the concept: a light special vehicle (the same Athlete or Strela), an average Ural-VPK and a Partner (Typhoon-Airborne Forces) and, if it is really necessary, then heavy ones - Typhoon 6x6 and / or Patrol 6x6. At the same time, there should be an understanding of how to use it all. Plus, you need to tightly control the money.

Because they are not suitable for moving on the battlefield, their use is extremely limited. In principle, there is only one purpose, transportation of l / s in conditions when shelling is possible. The same can be done by an armored personnel carrier, but only he, in addition to protection, is also armed.
To use an armored car as a means of delivering and transporting ammunition, as a medical vehicle, I don't even know where and how else it can be used.

As for the amerikosov, they roll their infantry armored Humvees with machine guns, armed with strikers again, armed with LAV-25, Oshkosh - these can be armed with cannons, MRAP and armed again. By the way, MRAP is used mainly by sappers and construction parts.

If we consider that exactly 1/2 of the entire American infantry is that light and is transported only on hummers, MLTV and JLTV, then we get more than unlimited use.
The new JLTVs decided to arm them with modules with a 12,7 mm machine gun + ATGM. Individual vehicles will receive a module with a 30 mm cannon, 7,62 machine gun and 2 MANPADS.
In addition to sappers, builders, light infantry, military police, these machines are used to heaps by the ILC and the National Guard.
Another thing is that the amerskaya infantry (read light infantry) has a large number of ATGMs and machine guns, but is practically devoid of artillery. For battles in cities, they are reinforced with tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.

In fact, any mrap (that this one, that a typhoon, that an oshkosh, that an armored hummer) is an armored personnel carrier and it should be considered that way.

Will not arise - the module from the BTR-82A fits perfectly, there is also a spoke and there is a BM-30.
There is a Crossbow - 12,7 mm and 23 mm are perfectly placed on it.
The problem here is that the Ministry of Defense does not like to buy combat modules and / or closed turrets for armored vehicles.

The reluctance to purchase combat modules is most likely due to their not very successful concept and, accordingly, design. As before, they put too simplified a tower from the BTR-60 everywhere, and now they are copied under the template. Even the BTR-80 did not have a 23 mm cannon and did not make an electric drive, but limited themselves to minor improvements. And the same sunroof can be made wider, with a ring rotating from an electric drive, for quick and convenient targeting. And remote control can be provided as an option to expand the possibilities. Roughly speaking, you can give a machine gunner or gunner a Cheburashka in the hands and on the hatch, and not just in the turret.

It can be used as a tractor for mortars and small guns. The question of application just does not seem insoluble. And it's not a problem to install a combat module on a 14-ton vehicle. The main thing is the ratio of price and operating costs, at least in comparison with the same BTR-82A.

These are sheets of aluminum or stainless steel. Often used by motorists 4 x 4. They are thin. Their purpose is to maintain cleanliness in the cabin and protect against corrosion. The dirt, which the servicemen will certainly bring on their shoes into the salon, is easy to wash off from these sheets and at the same time they do not rust. When a mine explodes, these light sheets will not fly anywhere and will not crush anyone, most likely to bend along with the floor.

Bends poorly or bends well ... it doesn't matter. Here are the sand trucks https://pickupgarage.ru/shop/sendtraki/, I saw how they sag when the SUV goes over them. Not much, but flex. And actually what is the question? These are sheets for maintaining the cleanliness of the passenger compartment, they are lightweight and harmless when a car is blown up.

If the force of the explosion is such that the sheets of aluminum that lie INSIDE the cabin begin to tear into fragments, then this is no longer important, because nothing alive will definitely remain in this cabin.

Look how the floor is made, it's V-shaped. This is a typical mine protection. In an explosion, the fragments go around the armored hull and go sideways. May damage the chassis, but it can be repaired. This floor construction seems to have been invented in South Africa. I could be wrong.

I am aware of the V-bottom function. Yes Here the question was about something else. Leaving on the floor in this armored car, it looks like it was laid without any attachment and with full physical contact with the bottom surface. When detonating under the hull, the bottom gets a powerful sense, like a blow from a multi-ton hammer! It deforms instantly, the V-shape reduces / but does not completely remove / the detonation effect. That is why they put the seats from the mounting on the ceiling, even the feet of the soldiers step on the steps that do not have contact with the floor! Otherwise, soldiers' spines and legs may break! And these metal sheets have contact with the floor over their entire surface! And they are cut into small dimensions! Thus, it seems to me, it may well fly out and cause damage!

Or they could have made for the Donbass a couple of hundred of these machines to stabilize the situation. The customer, of course, should be North Ossetia.

The last time they sent UAZs, somehow thin, and here is such a machine, it can do a lot, and carry guns and carry troops. And in light of the aggravation of oil prices, it is possible to transfer the plant in South Ossetia to martial law to ensure tight delivery times.

Yes, you can even make a shot simplified to a minimum in the interests of the LPNR - after all, GAZ is a private trader, and KAMAZ is essentially under the state.

Why is the width 2550 mm?
    Road clearance 2500 mm.
Those. transportation of these vehicles immediately falls under the concept of "out of gauge", with all the ensuing restrictions.
Previous Urals 4320 had a width of 2500 mm.

And if you think in advance, then having made 2280 mm in width (bridges allow this), such equipment could be shipped to the customer in standard containers, which would save many times on logistics when selling to "foreign customers".
