The situation after the Crimean War: ROPiT and its role in economic development and restoration of the Black Sea Fleet
The defeat of the Russian Empire in the Crimean War of 1853-1856 raised many questions for the state. Among others - the question of options for managing the Black Sea. Despite the fact that Russia, on the basis of the Paris Treaty, suffered relatively small territorial and geopolitical losses, resources were seriously depleted, especially in the southern direction. Crimea and many other Black Sea regions of the empire either lay in ruins, or reached, as today's economists would say, the production and economic bottom - these are the results of the military campaign in which the Ottomans, British, French and representatives of Sardinia and Prussia came out against Russia.
Economic growth in the devastated Black Sea region required a special program. And such a program was presented in a timely manner. This is a proposal addressed to the then Minister of Finance to create a private steamship company on the Black Sea. The main declared then goal was to ensure trade and postal communications of Russian ports with each other, as well as Russian ports with ports of foreign powers.
Ultimately, the Russian government supported the initiative, and 165 years ago, ROPiT, the Russian Society of Shipping and Trade, was created. The creation of such a society was supported by Emperor Alexander II. The experience of the Russian-American Company (established in 1799), which was quite successful, was taken as a basis.
As a result, after the Crimean War, the economy "began to move", and it was the Black Sea region that became its core in the south.
