Pirates fled from a hijacked container ship off the coast of Africa after a helicopter with Russian marines appeared
It became known about a successful operation carried out by Russian sailors off the Atlantic coast of Africa.
Reports indicate that the crew of the VPK "Vice-Admiral Kulakov" suppressed pirate activity in the Gulf of Guinea. A pirate group off the western coast of Africa attempted to hijack a ship sailing in that area under the Panama flag. At some point, the attempt was crowned with success.
The pirates overtook the ship in a fast boat and tried to take the crew hostage and drive the ship to the nearest port for unloading in their own interests. According to the latest data, we are talking about a container ship.
The ship's crew gave a distress signal and took refuge in the engine room. The seamen of the Russian warship responded to the signal. A Ka-27PS helicopter with marines was immediately lifted from its side. As soon as the helicopter appeared over the container ship hijacked by the pirates, the criminals immediately began to flee from the ship to their boat. Then they headed towards the shore at high speed.
According to the latest information, the Russian marines did not open fire to kill. A special group was landed on the container ship, which informed the crew of the cargo ship that it was out of danger. The container ship was able to continue sailing.
It should be noted that ships of companies from various countries sail under the Panama flag today. The reason is the special privileges for the registration and operation of ships in Panama. It is not reported about the citizens of which specific countries are on board the container ship freed from pirates.
The Gulf of Guinea, as well as the coastal waters of the so-called Horn of Africa, are among the most dangerous from the point of view of a potential pirate attack on the waters of the World Ocean. The Strait of Malacca is just as dangerous.
