British Navy tests Martlet missiles to combat fast boats and powerboats
17
The Royal British Navy has tested Martlet missiles designed to counter fast boats and cutters that can swarm aircraft carriers and other large warships. The new light multipurpose missile was created specifically for the destruction of small surface targets.
Reported by the press service of the Royal Navy.
British-made Wildcat attack helicopters are equipped with Martlet missiles. It is also planned to equip surface ships with them, which will enhance their protection from attacks by swarms of high-speed small-sized objects, both crew-controlled and unmanned.
The British Navy reports that during the firing, the missile separated from the helicopter and accelerated in 0,3 seconds to a speed of over 1850 miles per hour (over XNUMX km / h). During the tests, a large red inflatable target was used, which the British military informally calls the "big red tomato" ("Big Tomato"). The helicopter that fired the missile was lifted into the air from the destroyer HMS Defender, which had previously "distinguished itself" off the coast of Crimea.
The firing was carried out as part of the exercises that the British aircraft carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth conducted in the Pacific region. Before that, this squadron visited the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean.
