Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant "Dome" - 55 years

3

20 June 1957, a new defense industry enterprise was established by a decision of the USSR Council of Ministers. The Izhevsk Radio-Technical Plant, which was created in those years, was needed by the country for the production of various electronic weapons components. Since that time, 55 years have passed, the plant has changed its name several times, however, not only has it not stopped working, but has also become one of the largest defense industry enterprises.

The creation of the plant is associated with an interesting story. Originally, a garment factory was built near Izhevsk pond. However, a number of factors of foreign and domestic policy forced the country's military leadership to insist on changing the profile of the enterprise under construction. As a result, the already partially built garment factory turned into factory number XXUMX, where it was planned to “sew” radio-electronic equipment to control anti-aircraft guided missiles. The first workshops of the plant were built and equipped already in 444 year. In 1958, the plant received its first task - to master the mass production of K58I-5 control units for anti-aircraft missiles. In the autumn of the same year, the company was renamed the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant (IEMZ). By the end of December 1, the plant employees assembled an installation batch of K-1958I blocks and handed it over to the customer. The next year, 5, was marked by continued construction of production facilities, a change in the structure of workshops and departments, as well as a sharp increase in production rates. Thus, over the 1959 year, the number of workers at the IEMZ has almost doubled and reached the level of one and a half thousand people. As for the only product so far - K59I-5 blocks - in 1 a year 1959 units were produced. In the sixties, Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant entered with new workshops, new employees and new positions in the product range. In 1904, the production of telemetry equipment for anti-aircraft missiles was mastered.

Preparation for field testing

The following years were marked by the completion of the construction of new workshops and the development of new products. Production of a number of systems was started, not only for anti-aircraft guns, but also for ballistic missiles. In particular, the equipment for the emergency detonation of the 8K11 and 8K14 missiles was made in Izhevsk. A little later, in 61, Plant No. 444 was assigned the task of starting production of several elements of the Krug troop anti-aircraft missile system. To carry out these works, we had to expand production capacity and build another shop. The production of blocks for the Krug air defense system significantly increased the pace of plant development. So, for the period from 1961 to 1965, the total volume of IEMZ production increased four and a half times, and the list of products made was 70 with more than a thousand positions, the company's personnel numbered almost six thousand people.

In the second half of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies, the development of Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant received a new impetus. The company was given the task of producing almost all the electronics of the Osa anti-aircraft missile system, both the missile and its ground part. To ensure the release of the ordered components, we had to create two more workshops and several special departments. Throughout the seventies, the main products of IEMZ were equipment for the Osa air defense system, but by the end of the decade the company began to prepare for the release of new electronics. At this time in the Moscow Research Electromechanical Institute was going design of a new anti-aircraft complex "Thor". Its production was planned to expand in Izhevsk, so IEMZ employees to some extent participated in the development. In 1981, the first Torah prototype was assembled, and after a few years, Izhevsk workers began to manufacture serial anti-aircraft systems. The development of new products for the military air defense entailed the termination of the assembly of the Osa complexes. Since 1980, the IEMZ assembled the 9K33М3 Osa-AKM air defense system, and in 88, their production was completed. Based on the design of the Osa-AKM air defense missile system, the Saman-M1 target complex was created, designed to launch training targets during training firing anti-aircraft missiles.

Since the mid-eighties, the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant has launched the production of several modifications of the “Thor” complex, including the newest Tor-M2. The factory manufactures electronics for combat vehicles, as well as the remaining elements of their towers. Several years ago, a variant of a complex called Tor-MNNUME with a wheeled chassis produced by Minsk Minsk Tractor Assembly and Tuning Plant was presented.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the plant, shortly before the name “Dome”, had to look for ways to survive and develop civilian products. Already in 1992, IEMZ released the first batches of equipment for the oil industry. Later, the spectrum of non-military products was expanded with climatic equipment, first of all, with heating systems, special equipment for the nuclear industry, etc.

In 2002, the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant, due to its specialization and extensive experience in creating electronics for anti-aircraft systems, changed its legal status. The federal state unitary enterprise became an open joint-stock company and became part of the Almaz-Antey air defense concern. Already as part of the concern, the Kupol plant, together with other enterprises, completed the creation of the Tor-M2 complex and continues the further development of this family of domestic short-range air defense systems.
