Family prospects: the microwave rifle passed state tests

Basic microwave chambered for 7,62x54 mm R

A promising microwave sniper rifle designed by A.Yu. Chukavina successfully coped with the next stage of checks. State tests have been passed, and now the Ministry of Defense will have to decide the fate of this development. If a positive decision is made, the new rifle will begin to replace the well-deserved, but old SVD and its newer modifications in the troops.

Test process

Concern "Kalashnikov" for the first time presented a new microwave rifle at the military-technical forum "Army-2017". In the future, this sample was improved and reappeared at exhibitions. In addition, new modifications of the rifle were created, incl. in the interests of other customers. These variants of the rifle differed from each other and from the base sample, mainly in the used cartridge.

In February of this year, the management of Kalashnikov announced that after the next stage of improvements and improvements, the microwave rifle is under state testing. The activities are carried out within the framework of the ROC "Reaper". They took at least several months to complete, but the exact timing of the completion of the tests was not named.

October 5 RIA News with reference to "Kalashnikov" reported the completion of state tests. The microwave oven has been tested with positive results. The test results are now being documented. After that, the Ministry of Defense will decide on the introduction of the rifle into service.

An order for serial production of rifles is also expected. In November 2019, the management of Kalashnikov claimed that the series could be launched in two years. Most likely, these plans will be fulfilled, but with a slight delay.

The "Reaper" sniper complex is considered as a modern replacement for the well-deserved, but old SVD rifle. The basis of the "Reaper" is a microwave rifle chambered for 7,62x54 mm R. Due to new technical solutions, materials, technologies and components, the new rifle should surpass the existing ones in terms of its main characteristics. weapon.

Second competition

Almost simultaneously with the base microwave for 7,62x54 mm R, two other modifications were created using the 7,62x51 mm NATO (.308 Win) and 8,6x70 mm (.338 Lapua Magnum) cartridges. It was planned to offer them to various customers, incl. foreign. The future of the two rifles chambered for foreign development is still unknown, but will be determined in the coming years.

At the beginning of 2019, the Ministry of Defense launched a new ROC "Ugolyok", the purpose of which is to create sniper systems for .308 Win and .338 LM ammunition with an effective range of 800 m. The army wants to get promising rifles, new versions of cartridges, sights and other products ...

With the help of new sniper systems, in the medium term, it is planned to re-equip individual units using high-precision weapons. All leading organizations developing small arms are involved in the Ugolyok program. Thus, the Kalashnikov concern joined the ROC with two new modifications of its microwave oven.

Until now, the ROC "Ugolek" was at the stage of design work and factory tests. Earlier it was reported that state tests of all presented rifles would begin no earlier than the end of 2021. Accordingly, over the next year, the Ministry of Defense may choose the most successful samples for further improvement. Then, after all the necessary procedures, they will be adopted.

It is not known when and how the "Ugolyok" competition will end. It can be assumed that two microwave rifles chambered for different cartridges have a high chance of winning. So, the basic Chukavin rifle for domestic ammunition has already coped with state tests and fully confirmed its characteristics. This means that the process of developing and fine-tuning new modifications will be simplified to a certain extent and will lead to the desired results.

Weapons of the future

This year marks the 58th anniversary of the adoption of the SVD rifle with a standard PSO-1 sight. Despite its considerable age, this sniper complex remains the main one in its niche. SVD is distinguished by a successful design, created according to a far-sighted technical task. As a result, the rifle for a long time met the requirements of the army and other operators, and there was virtually no need for radical modernization.

Modification of the rifle for 7,62x51 mm

Nevertheless, the views on the use of sniper weapons are changing, and the requirements for them are being adjusted. By now, the SVD has ceased to meet all the wishes of the army, and besides, it cannot occupy several relevant niches. As a result, it became necessary to develop a new sample.

The main role of the SVD in the army is the weapon of an infantry sniper. To replace it, the ROC "Reaper" was launched in this capacity. The result of this work was a microwave product for a domestic 7,62-mm rifle cartridge. It has passed state tests and will enter service in the near future. However, it is obvious that the transition from SVD to microwave oven will be difficult and expensive, and will also take many years. Due to its quantity, the SVD will remain in the outfit of infantry snipers for a long time.

To solve other combat missions, ROC "Ugolyok" rifles are being developed. Due to the use of other cartridges and obtaining other combat characteristics, they are not a direct analogue or replacement of the SVD. On the contrary, they will have to supplement the Dragunov rifle or the weapon that replaces it. It is not known what samples will occupy this niche. Perhaps these will be new microwave modifications.

Next generation

At present, the Ministry of Defense, together with a wide range of industrial enterprises, are engaged in the development of military equipment for military personnel. New products for various purposes are being created, incl. promising small arms of different classes. Some of these developments have already gone through all the stages of testing and now have a chance to enter service.

Experienced rifle for .338 LM

One of the main directions is the creation of next generation sniper systems. The forces of all major enterprises have already developed a number of new sniper rifles, submitted to several competitions of the Ministry of Defense and other structures. One of these programs has come to its end by now, and the other will soon reach the most crucial stage. It is noteworthy that in both ROCs the newest microwave rifle in different versions found a place.

The Reaper program ends successfully. The microwave rifle chosen by the military chambered for 7,62x54 mm R has passed state tests with positive results, and now a decision on its adoption is expected. Two other variants of the Chukavin rifle can win the "Ugolyok" competition and go into service over the next few years.

It is possible that all three existing modifications of the microwave oven will be able to get into the troops, but so far it cannot be ruled out that other samples will win at Ugolok. However, regardless of the results of this competition, the new Kalashnikov rifle has already shown its strengths and in the foreseeable future will begin to enter the troops. And it is she who will now give a start to the long-awaited rearmament of snipers - with obvious positive consequences for the army.

If I'm not mistaken, they write that the barrel is 410-460 mm long .. If this is so, something is not enough for a sniper rifle chambered for the Mosin cartridge .. all the consequences .. Or under her special cartridge with other gunpowders? And then I had to shoot from an HPO with a barrel 420 - the feeling, to put it mildly, is not a cake .. It’s not in vain that the SVD has 620 ..

SVDM does not have them either, the maximum is that a regular sight and a nozzle for a teplak or a night light will not fit there, but we do not use this, we have specialized sights

yes, the microwave in 7,62 caliber does not provide an aimed defeat at a distance of more than 800 meters, if you looked at Wikipedia and saw a figure of 1 meters there, then I personally inform you that the rifle can only provide this range in the 200 mm Lapua caliber

only one moment - the microwave is predicted to replace the SVD, which is considered the weapon of a platoon sniper, who, according to the charter, is not supposed to have something larger than 7,62, and for those who are supposed to already have St.-98, Orsis and others are available, and with taking into account the bolt scheme, they even in caliber 8,6 will be much more accurate ... so do not write nonsense if you did not understand the question at first, but just admit that you stupidly did not know that a microwave frequency of 1 meters from 200 R does not play..

Andrey, the declared aiming range is nominative due to the use of 54R ammunition, in fact, if there is a 420mm barrel, its characteristics will be more modest, at 800 meters maximum .. Believe 1 MOA per 100 meters, this is nowhere, it is enough to make the SVD barrel heavier and you will have the same results...

Yesterday, on the border of the Kursk region and Ukraine, during a clash with violators of the state border, a Russian border guard was killed and three militants were killed. “... The PYa was put into service together with the GSh-18 and the SR-1 in difficult times for the GRAU of the RF Ministry of Defense, on the eve of the troubled times. The problems of the pistol were obvious from the very beginning, and over the past 15 years since then, they have not been fully solved.

There is a science called mechanics. I highly recommend the pro, eksel-moxel, to those who are talking about sniper weapons. In general, when the bullet crawls along the rifling, shoved under the ass with powder gases, the barrel begins to bend. writes out such a curve, somewhat similar to the contour of the grooves. Like the pressure that a bullet exerts on the barrel at any given moment, cutting into the rifling. The longer the free-hanging barrel, the larger this curve, has a larger diameter described by the muzzle relative to the plane perpendicular to the barrel. Not asleep yet? Pro, ay! Tady is still a bit. Where does the bump start from? From the barrel attachment point.
And what do we see in this case? The bar of the god-damned Picatinny (not to be remembered by nightfall) holds the trunk by the first third. Moreover, the bar itself is not very strong and rigid ... So the sight installed on it will also shake it not sour so much when it goes to bend. These are all sorts of retrogrades sculpt the brackets of the mounts on the receiver, and even better in general on the stock, so that they do not jump like on a whip. We are smart as a vutka here, we have no time for retrogrades.
And two-thirds of the trunk still hang freely. Apparently, when testing a slightly longer bar, the bourgeois sight generally jumped off and fell to the subwoofer in America. And what about barrel rotation? And it decreased almost imperceptibly. Wrong attachment point)

          From Dragunov's notes-

When 11 rifles were made at the end of December, and I shot and tested two of them for accuracy, the result was simply outstanding. For both, at a 100-meter distance, a series of 10 shots was closed with a 20-kopeck coin (the diameter of a Soviet 20-kopeck coin of that time was less than 22 mm)

Well, yes. The stupid thickness of the barrel prevents its deformation under the action of a monstrously fast moving piston, which also rubs the inner surface with all its might. And it rotates. It's funny that modern technologies allow not only to reduce deformation, but almost to cancel it altogether. However, the gunsmiths have no brains left for a long time, so it is foolish to hope for this. Well, okay ...

I read it, but remained with the opinion that you think that the barrel is attached to the bar ...
Even in the Kalashnikov assault rifle there was always a free barrel, with canopies that did not limit its temperature elongation.
There is a sad experience of the Mosin Rifle in sniper use, when the uneven heating of the wooden stock of the barrel led to its curvature and deforms the tightly drawn barrel. Then they began to fasten the clasp with a backlash and grind the bed so that the piece of paper would pass along the entire length of the barrel.
And your favorite mechanics always say that differently loaded parts should be mutually decoupled.
In a microwave oven, a gas outlet tube is suitable for the barrel - but it is not a carrier and has a backlash.

There are no problems with the voltage on the impact of a bullet / projectile on the barrel for a long time. There are only irreparable resonant vibrations (like a string), from which they leave by changing the thickness and length of the barrel.

I am talking about these vibrations in general. And you spoke a little higher about a free-hanging barrel) A free-hanging barrel is the barrel attached to the console - a support located behind the first attachment point - the receiver. Due to this method of fastening, it is possible to reduce the swing of the barrel vibrations. Only this must be done by understanding the mechanics of the process, having a spatial imagination and a corresponding structure of thinking. That the current designers no longer have weapons.
And by the way. "Mutually untied", this is the last century)

Freely hung ... is only one attachment point - the receiver. Any additional points will bend the barrel due to the difference in thermal expansion.
The resonances are adjusted so that the harmonics of the energy from the passage of the bullet do not match the resonant frequency of the barrel. Additional attachment points change the frequency but cannot eliminate the effect itself - it cannot be eliminated - just select the frequencies with the greatest difference.

It is quite possible to smoothly switch to the more powerful 7,62 × 67 mm (.300 Winchester Magnum) if you need more accuracy, range and flatness of the trajectory. Behold at the root. The quality of the cartridge is the foundation of small arms, everything is based on it.
It's like a motor in an airplane - all performance characteristics dance from it.
So it is here - all performance characteristics are dancing precisely from the cartridge (he sets the theoretical framework). But this is a taboo, it is not customary for us to talk about it, it is better to endlessly improve the investigation, because of gesheft you cannot get it.)))

I'm not sure about gesheft. The tool is sold once, and the expense for it provides income for years. With very conditional $ x000 per rifle, $ y per cartridge and barrel resource z000 shots, it turns out that $ y * z000 for cartridges during the barrel life cycle exceeds $ x000. Without knowing the exact prices and profitability, as well as the costs of replacing the barrel in order to extend the life cycle, it is difficult to assess the economy more accurately, but the order of the amounts is similar. And the flow is smoother on the cartridges.

It is strange that this is not a slightly altered SVD or SVDM. However, the barrel is short, less than 500 mm for a sniper rifle.
The declared effective firing range is 1200m like that of the SVD, however, judging by the barrel length, the accuracy will be lower (also if we take into account that our metalworking in the middle of the day leaves much to be desired, those who have recently bought new barrels will understand).

In general, we can conclude that this is just the same forge in the other hand, but the babosiks will wash it off well.

There is also an excellent 338 LM ammunition. He covers 300 like a bull a sheep in all respects. This is confirmed by the choice of ammunition in all shooting competitions. Why not make a 7,62x54 cartridge without welt on the basis of 7,62x54R? Alteration of existing weapons for such a cartridge would take a minimum of resources. But in the future there would be a problem-free ammunition for creating more effective automatic weapons. After all, after the war, all captured MG-42s with more serious costs were converted from 7,92x57 to NATO's 7,62x51 and received an excellent MG-3. As you know, a weldless cartridge is more convenient both in automatic weapons and in self-loading ones, incl. sniper.

And in my opinion, it makes no sense at all to do anything new under the rifle cartridge 7,62x54R, even a new cartridge without a welt. Well, there will be nothing outstanding, it will be a little better, as always. Soon they will make a new machine gun under 5,45 with a bar for optics and a weapon that can work in manpower close to the characteristics of the SVD will turn out, worse, but already comparable. If you make a new rifle, so under a more powerful cartridge, a cartridge capable of penetrating any body armor and light equipment. The choice of more powerful cartridges is large and the aforementioned 8,6x70 mm, and 7,62x67, you can also come up with your own non-interchangeable with foreign ones. This is not a bad SVD, this cartridge is no longer powerful enough for it.

Nice rifle. But the US Marine Corps ordered the Smash 2000 smart sights from the Israeli company Smart Shooter for testing. These devices automatically detect, illuminate and take on target tracking, as well as predict the point of impact of the bullet, taking into account the ballistic characteristics of the weapon. As reported by The Drive, the Marines are hoping the Smash 2000 will help them combat small drones.
The Smash 2000 scope is suitable for a variety of weapons, including the M4 assault rifle, the AR15 self-loading rifle and the M110 sniper rifle. It weighs 1,2 kilograms and is 19,8 centimeters long, 8,1 centimeters wide and 8,2 centimeters high. The sight is equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the full charge of which is enough for 3,6 thousand shots, as well as a collimator indicator for aimed fire during the day and a night vision system with an image display for shooting at night.
Smash 2000 allows you to automatically detect, highlight and take on target tracking, as well as predict the point of impact of a bullet, taking into account the ballistic characteristics of the weapon used. Including when it comes to moving targets at a distance of up to 300 meters.

In the troops and in the warehouses of sniper weapons in caliber 7,62 * 54, it will last for another 30-50 years, this is the SVD, SV-98 and the good old Mosinka.
Army sniper units, as well as Special Forces of the GRU, Airborne Forces, MPs, must be provided with long-range, but relatively light sniper weapons in caliber 8,6x70 mm (.338 Lapua Magnum) in order to guarantee hitting enemy personnel and lightly armored vehicles at a distance of 1,5 km.
