Experts comment on material in the US media about the reasons for the disposal of Tu-160 bombers after the collapse of the USSR
Experts comment on the material that appeared on the pages of the American military edition Military Watch. The magazine article presents a version of why, after the collapse of the USSR, it was decided to dispose of the bulk of the Tu-160 strategic bombers remaining in Ukraine in a short time.
The American author claims that ultimately this did not allow China to become the owner of critical Soviet technologies for creating its own strategic missile carriers.
From the material:
An indirect evidence of such a threat in an American magazine is the sale to China of an unfinished Soviet cruiser, as well as a prototype of the Su-33 carrier-based combat aircraft, on the basis of which Chinese specialists subsequently created the J-15 carrier-based fighter.
The material stated that "all efforts to prevent the possible transfer of technology to create strategic bombers to China were made by the United States together with its allies." These efforts resulted in the disposal of the Tu-160, which remained in Ukraine.
Experts believe that these explanations could be close to the truth if it were not about the 1990s, but at least a decade later. But then (in the early 90s), as noted, for the United States, the "Chinese threat" was not as "publicized" by the American authorities themselves as it is today. Much more in Washington and NATO feared that in Russia forces might come to power that would quickly restore the country's military potential and carry out the reunification of the republics. Therefore, it is difficult to call the statements in the US media consistent that the White Swans were cut into metal solely for the reason that Ukraine would not sell them to China.
