India's Ministry of Defense has placed the largest order for the purchase of tanks in recent years
India's Ministry of Defense places largest purchase order in recent years tanks for their armed forces. The total order value is $ 1,02 billion.
With these funds, the Indian military department is going to purchase 118 tanks. Moreover, all these tanks are of Indian design and Indian production. We are talking about such a technique as the Arjun Mk-1A.
The parameters of the contract are as follows: within 30 months, five Arjun tanks must be delivered to the troops. Then, annually, the Indian army will receive about three dozen such combat vehicles.
Ministry of Defense of India:
The Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, General Manoj Mukund, noted that Indian tank units need to be updated and replenished in their arsenals.
The contract was signed 8 months after the approval of the program for the development of the tank component of the Indian troops by representatives of the Council for Defense Purchases of India.
The Arjun Mk-1A is an upgraded version of the Arjun Mk-1 main battle tank currently in service with the army.
General Mukund:
It is expected that a new order for 118 tanks for the Indian army will create about 8 thousand new jobs and attract about two hundred Indian suppliers.
According to the Indian commander-in-chief, the tank was designed in such a way that it "is well suited for protecting the state border." At the same time, a number of Indian experts are very skeptical about the updated "Arjun" due to the fact that its weight, according to some sources, has exceeded 62 tons. Some time ago, the Indian media reported that the Arjun Mk-1A is almost 10 tons heavier than the base version! This is despite the fact that the basic version of the Arjun Mk-1 tank has a mass of about 58 tons.
If we pay attention to the amount of the contract, it turns out that one Arjun Mk-1A tank will cost the Indian budget more than $ 8 million. This compares to the price of the most expensive tanks in the world today, including the Korean K2 Black Panther.
