Multitool is an irreplaceable human companion

138

In the previous articles, we considered evolution of knife steelsand design features of modern folding knives.

Despite the fact that the knife is one of the most versatile tools used by humans, its capabilities are often insufficient. Therefore, almost simultaneously (by historical standards) with the advent of the folding knife, people began to create some "combines", which in our time began to be called "multifunctional knife", "multifunctional tool" or simply "multitool".

In the previous article, an image of a Roman folding multifunctional knife was published - perhaps this is one of the first "multitools" created by people.

Multitools have been used since ancient Rome

At first glance, multitools could well replace conventional folding knives - it is logical, why carry separate tools and a knife if they can be combined into one multifunctional tool?

In reality, this is not entirely true.

Any multifunctionality leads to a decrease in the effectiveness of the elements that make up this “multifunctionality”, in comparison with highly specialized solutions - it is more convenient to cut products with a separate knife, to remove the skin, a screwdriver built into a multitool will almost always yield to a separate high-quality tool.

However, in life it is not always possible to carry a full-size knife and a toolbox with you. And in this case, suddenly arising problems are promptly solved by a multitool, which can be carried with you almost constantly.

Multitools can be conditionally divided into two categories - a multifunctional knife, in which the knife blade is the main tool, supplemented by auxiliary ones, and a multifunctional tool, the design of which can be based on any tool, for example, pliers, and the knife blade is auxiliary, along with others tools.

Multifunctional knife and multifunctional tool

The border between multifunctional knives and multifunctional tools is rather arbitrary, therefore, in what follows we will use the name “multitool”.

Multitools of the USSR and the Russian Federation

Most of the folding knives used by the citizens of the USSR can be confidently attributed to multitool.

Of course, housewives in the kitchen used ordinary, non-folding kitchen knives, hunters more often used strong fixed knives, but everyone else who wanted to take a knife "for mushrooms", on a picnic, on a business trip or to the country, most often preferred multifunctional knives. In the childhood of the author, it was generally believed that the "toughness" of a knife is largely determined by the number of tools that complement it.

Soviet multitools

The quality of most of the Soviet multitool was poor.

Often they say in the comments - excellent knives were produced in the USSR, I still use them, and so on. What can be said here? Until you try really high-quality products yourself, you won’t understand this. Soviet knives used to seem cool to me and were the subject of dreams at a young age, but now those crooked, creaking designs made of simple stainless steel no longer attract the eye, causing only nostalgia.

On the other hand, it cannot be said that Soviet knives / multitools were useless - both their designs and the materials used in them were of much better quality than in inexpensive Chinese knives with which they are often compared. The Soviet industry produced a huge number of models and modifications that could satisfy all categories of users - tourists, mushroom pickers, hunters, and so on.

Multitool is an irreplaceable human companion

The modern Chinese counterpart, by the way, is very inexpensive

And this is a German prototype - the HIMMEL multifunctional knife from the Second World War - is very expensive.

Multifunctional knives are also produced in Russia.

The quality has grown since the days of the USSR, but the range has decreased significantly, and it is hardly possible to say that they are very popular. And the point here is not in the quality, design or primitiveness of the design, rather, for Russian manufacturers, multitools are something secondary, they are not particularly visible on the shelves of knife stores, bloggers do not write or tell about them, they are not heard even by amateurs knives, what can we say about ordinary citizens.

Modern Russian multitools

The last surge of interest in domestic multitool arose after the Russian military equipment of the "Ratnik" serviceman was equipped with the 6E6 multitool of the "Saro" company. However, this is a specific model, it is not interesting to most ordinary people.

Speaking of multitools, there are two mastodons: companies that have become a household name in many ways when it comes to multifunction knives and multifunctional tools are Victorinox and Leatherman.

Victorinox and Leatherman

It makes no sense to go into the history of these companies. It is enough that they both control most of the world's multitool market.

Perhaps Victorinox is an even more recognizable brand in this respect. Previously, they had a competitor - Wenger, but in 2005 it was acquired by Victorinox, which became almost a monopoly in the market for simple, high-quality multifunctional knives.

The Victorinox brand can be somewhat associated with the Zippo lighter brand - they can be found in a huge number of stores in all parts of the world, their design is largely archaic, but reliable, convenient and practical.

Victorinox produces a great variety of multifunctional folding knives - all sizes, colors and shapes, with a varying number of auxiliary tools.

Victorinox multitool examples (not drawn to scale)

For most people, the capabilities of Victorinox multifunctional knives are enough "for the eyes" in all life situations. In my opinion, Victorinox multitool is still better to use as a second tool, and as the main one it is more convenient to carry knives with one blade and a clip for carrying on a pocket.

The combination of fame and relatively low cost, a large selection of models and a fairly high quality of workmanship, provided Victorinox multitool with an almost monopoly position in the market, even the Chinese could not knock them out of it.

Victorinox also has a multifunctional tool, but it is much less in demand than their main products.

Victorinox Multifunction Tool

If Victorinox is still mostly associated with multi-functional knives designed for household use, Leatherman is rather a multi-functional tool designed for professional / semi-professional use or for doing some kind of work - it is not a picnic toy.

The design of Leatherman multi-tools is much more advanced than that of Victorinox knives, modern powder steel can be used on the blades of some models, handle covers can be made of titanium or colored G-10 fiberglass, many tools are fixed in the unfolded state and can be opened with one hand.

Leatherman multitools (not drawn to scale)

Leatherman multitools are effective when performing various minor repairs; in the same trip, you can use them to repair equipment and equipment.

There are both supporters and opponents of multitools.

Some, including the author, appreciate multitools very much and use them all the time, others can't stand multitools, preferring a full-sized tool. It is clear that you can’t take a box with tools on a hike, but a multi-tool is easy. But even somewhere in the country, when you just need to tighten the screw, there is a choice: just pull the multitool out of your pocket and tighten the screw, or go to the shed, take a screwdriver, tighten the screw, take the screwdriver - it's easy to see which option is more energy efficient.

In general, Victorinox and Leatherman have developed a kind of "division of labor", in which Victorinox is more often used in everyday life, and Leatherman is used for work or hobby, although in general their areas of application often overlap.

Together Victorinox and Leatherman occupy a significant, if not most, part of the market, and Victorinox is the undisputed leader here.

Who else is there in the multitool market?

Various "Chinese" - thousands of them.

There are both very high-quality products and primitive crafts, capable only of snatching off the owner's finger. In general, China is developing rapidly, the quality of their products is growing, but they cannot yet fight the market leaders.

Finale

Multitools are an extremely interesting and useful category of pocket human assistants. It is easy to see that people are often afraid of knives or afraid of the reaction of others to the fact that they will walk with a knife (according to the author, these phobias are one of the serious signs of the degradation of society). One way or another, but in this case, instead of a folding knife with one blade, you can carry a multitool with you, at least the simplest Victorinox, which has models even for children.

Multitools look much less aggressive and attract less attention from both others and law enforcement agencies. For example, in the same Israel, in which the super-tough legislation on knives, is quite loyal to the "Lazerman" and "Victorinox".

A quality folding knife is always more difficult than a non-folding knife, and a multitool is much more difficult to design and manufacture than a regular folding knife. Therefore, there are always fewer manufacturers of high-quality multi-tools than manufacturers of simple folding and non-folding knives.

And Victorinox and no one at all manages to move from the pedestal, despite the fact that the knives / multitool of this company lack modern technical solutions that have become widespread on single-bladed folding knives, for example:

- washers on the blade axis, which improve the smoothness of opening / closing the blade and tools;

- screws allowing for disassembly and maintenance;

- titanium / aluminum / steel / carbon handles - the subject of tuning Victorinox knives;

- high-quality knife steels, including powder ones, for blade and tools;

- one-handed opening - not available on most Victorinox models;

- reliable holders of blades and tools - almost always either absent or not too reliable;

- a clip for carrying on a pocket.

In general, there is something to work on, especially since there is a request for the use of the latest technologies in multitools.

Victorinox Customized Multitools

It would be great if a knife company appeared in Russia that could compete with Victorinox at a higher technological level.

Unfortunately, this is unlikely, and the point is not only in technological capabilities - it will take building a global sales network, popularizing the brand, and this is extremely difficult, takes time and huge investments.

On the other hand, things like Victorinox knives, Zippo lighters or Maglite lanterns not only bring profit to owners and taxes in the country of production, but are also a kind of soft power, promoting the culture of the producing country or at least reminding of its existence. those who have never heard of it before.

When I worked as a geophysicist, I was very pleased with the multitool - instead of a set of tools, carrying one knife in your pocket is extremely convenient! A simple repair can be done right on the profile (stripping the wires, tightening the nut or screw on the coil, and even something small), and the multitool is enough. I had it in the form of pliers. So for someone a toy, for someone a necessary tool)))

the pleasure is certainly not cheap, but when buying Leatherman we have a guarantee for 25 years and it does not matter the cause of the breakdown, they repair it, and more often they change it to a new one for free, I have one of the supertools for 25 changed and repaired 20 times and came from the very first model which didn’t have knives and screwdriver clamps until the very last.
The most convenient thing, without it as without hands, even if you need to work under tension - sometimes you just stick your hand in a plastic bag and work with it.

From time to time you need it: open the parcel, cut the snack, on the beach helped the girl open the beer (attempts to knock down the cork on the concrete dam were unsuccessful for her), at work, in the room I was able to lift the hatch into the underground, etc., etc.

I think you just didn’t work with a good multitool.

Just worked for them. The blades are excellent, both plain and serrated, the sling cutter is generally chic for cutting clamps, fixing the tool. Everything is fine. But there are 4 BUT. Crappy scissors (wixes cut better), loose levers on pliers, weight 200g and a screwdriver with flat bits, located off-center. For those who desperately need pliers without excessive loads, I think it will work fine, but I took a cybertool instead. Lighter, smaller, a screwdriver is more convenient, and I don't need pliers. Like it or not, it's all a matter of taste and depends heavily on the tasks. But here is also a nuance, how to change the set of bits, not all the necessary ones are produced by Wix, but it has not yet been possible to find such on the side. I know about the magnet, but I don't want to

Knife makers usually don't go further than knives.
Although they could sell screwed-in pencil holders for transoms and dashboards to cars or velos. The powerful tube of such a pencil case is the handle of a repair multitool.
In everyday life, they can be hidden inside door handles, batteries, in clothes hangers, in parts of computers, such as stands for monitors, in various places in a car ...
Well, they don't like to produce non-knife instrumental multitools - for example, cutters for artistic carving, needle files, as soon as I adapt for carvings, they seem to make, in fact, a multimeter - which is also a multitool, only electrical.

Agree. But still it is not enough for EDC. You need a full blade. I switched to this:

Now I realized that in the city I saw too much (and this is extra thickness), the cross screwdriver can be replaced with the usual one on the opener, but nothing can replace the corkscrew. laughing

No need to take with finger pads, they will peel off over time, a main blade stopper is very desirable.
Their can opener is weak, and an unnecessary stray paired with the main blade.
But, oddly enough, I use mini-scissors all the time.

A tiny correction to the author: in the photo of 4 Soviet multitools there is a boatswain's knife. It is not really a multitool, but a specialized knife, like a sling cutter or a diver's knife. On this knife, the tool, guessed as a wildly thick curved awl, is the boatswain's brake tool for disassembling the cable into strands.

The topic of multitool in Russia is not so relevant due to the small number of backpackers in the country. Agree, the easiest way is to throw the necessary set of tools into the trunk of a car and not worry about opening an awl or the necessary screwdriver.
A real multi-tool with a set of different options needed in emergency situations is simply impossible to find. Either there is none, or the other, or the quality ... But I am supposed that this set should have some kind of device for lighting a fire: a small fire starter or the same small magnifying glass (light the fire from the sun's rays) ... These are the details . There are no truly universal multi-tools and simply cannot be. Ideally, this device can help out in some completely hopeless situations and will not burden the owner with its compactness.
There are also such multitools (I had something similar):

The author, thanks, the article is a delight of the soul.

I have Leatherman, a lightweight version for permanent wear. At one time it was worth like an Indian elephant, but I am very pleased. The tool is more than 8 years old, finds its application in various situations and in general - nya!
Nevertheless, I note that Leatherman "is no longer a cake" - I saw old knives supplied in a completely leather case - cool thing, my knife case fell apart after a year - it's a shame.

Victorinox - I have this one, good, but not catchy, some of it is too homely, multy - is, but the tooliness is not felt.

Separately, I want to note the SOG knives for their absolutely magical pliers - there is a special gearbox (reducer, Karl!) There is a special gearbox that significantly increases the clamping force. The move, of course, is less - no one has canceled the golden rule of mechanics - but it looks like a complete dump of the head, although in practice it’s not very: heavy, not stubborn, something constantly falls off of it, slides in the hands ...

Of course, our Tourist - a spoon / fork is always with me on business trips - I rarely use it, but it never even occurred to me to throw it out of my suitcase - such a thing simply cannot be superfluous.

As for the manufacture of station wagons in our country, and even with access to the foreign market, I believe that the train left, and the rails not only cooled down, but self-buried into the embankment so that you can’t dig it out already. Here, as in any business, it is completely pointless to catch up with slippers and whoever gets up first, you have to get out on your own track - "cut" your brands in new areas of human activity.
    I think so.

I have PwerLock, but there is "one moment" - the cheeks that close the compartment with the rest of the tool - if you want to get a knife, they must be opened, and they, at least in my version of the knife, fall off "at once" and fall with a clang on the floor that just freezes nafig.
Also, the sharpening of the main knife is half straight, and half serrated - neither fish nor meat.
Another nuance - a lot of actions to pull out any tool - you need to open the station wagon, open the cheek, get the tool, close the cheek, close the department ...
At Laetherman, everything will be more comfortable, because all the tools are collected on the outside of the station wagon and it is more comfortable in the hand thanks to non-slip pads, and the SOG slides in the hand like a remnant.
But, nevertheless, the knife costs its money, its cover is purely leather, made very high quality - the others seem to no longer do that, the tools themselves are also of high quality, all the blades are fixed, a powerful saw, a sharp awl. The station wagon is heavy as hell, but as Boris-Razor used to say: "Heavy means quality." And how pliers work for him - no one has such a thing even close!
Also, on the official website, it seems that you can order additional tools, disassemble the knife and add / subtract what you need - I wrote to them several years ago, I wanted to change my half-serrated misunderstanding, but they did not answer a word, infections.

But, to be honest, this station wagon - PowerLock - is more for the soul than for a specific job - I rarely use and mostly pliers.

Perhaps Victorinox is an even more recognizable brand in this respect. Previously, they had a competitor - Wenger, but in 2005 it was acquired by Victorinox, which became almost a monopoly in the market for simple, high-quality multifunctional knives.

If not for this purchase, the Wenger company would no longer exist or the Chinese would have bought it, which is what Switzerland feared most of all. And today the company is working and developing, releasing even such monsters from eighty-five items.

Such knives are very familiar to me. They did not differ in particular beauty and quality of materials, but in the 60s of the last century, it was the dream of every boy.
In fact, simple and not expensive "penknives" have been massively produced since the post-war years by numerous cooperatives, and since 1962, after the destruction of the industrial cooperation system, consumer goods shops of many metal-processing enterprises.
By the end of the 60s - the beginning of the 70s, "guild workers" became adept at making them. Quality and design have improved significantly. The goods went with a bang and were sold with great success by entire networks of "lured" small hardware and haberdashery stores. At the same time, a number of high-profile trials of underground craftsmen took place. Since it was about the amounts of illegal profits of more than 10 thousand rubles, the sentences were, as a rule, death sentences.

I am not familiar with such problems. I don’t eat in backyards and I don’t drink on trains.

I don't eat canned food on the street. I eat at home, at the table, I have a bottle opener for them. Yes, and on normal canned food there is a ring, so as not to be steamed with bottle openers.
And I don’t drink on trains because I respect other people and don’t want the whole car to smell of fumes.

Is it so hard to understand?

I do not argue, perhaps you are the only one who urgently needs to open a jar of sprats or cut a loaf on a bench, but most people do not carry knives for this.

As a last resort, I needed a knife not to open canned food, or cut a snack, but in order to cut a certain thing. And as luck would have it, it was not there.

Combination... relatively low cost..., provided for Victorinox multitool

recourse a piece of a knife blade 5 cm long, acting as a keychain (Rally model) at a price of about 1000 rubles, okay, there is a toothpick there (it often helps). But, is it low cost? The same form factor is Chinese 100-200 rubles! The quality of steel is absolutely unnecessary here! And why overpay?

Well, why advertising? I have 3 multitools, a couple of ours and a Chinese one. On 2 there are no tool holders, the third is bulky and has already changed the connecting axis. I would love to buy a quality one from a laserman, but they are not imported to us, they think that it is expensive. In stores, mainly Chinese consumer goods worth up to a thousand rubles. Accordingly, the quality is so-so and there are no clamps at all.

And what changes the advertising nature of the article? hi

I, from New York, grateful distant relatives, on the occasion presented, bought in the "SOG" brand store, a light folding knife with a black plastic handle and a pendulum blade lock (about 1/3 of the length with serrated sharpening), and weighty (made of stainless steel ) military (with sockets for crimping detonator caps) multitool in a thick leather case (for wearing on a belt).
Nothing like that, a knife and a multitool, well, all the blades were cut "straight from the store", no sharpening was required!
But the main blade of the multitool was obviously too narrow and not enough in length - it was enough to cut a small piece of salmon crookedly, and "crumble" a thin sausage, even a medium-sized apple or tomato had to be cut in two steps ...
The saw of my "SOG" ovsky multitool (a clear forerunner of the second from the left in the bottom row in the picture to the Article) is above all praise good , optimal size and very sharp (hooked and "angry", like the mouth of a shark winked ) immediately came in handy on the way to the dacha, when the shaft of the purchased scythe turned out to be too long for the passenger compartment of the minibus - for a few "zips" with a saw, a piece of strong dry wood with a diameter of 40mm flew off to the side.
Then the thick, damp branches of apricots, already hanging on the road, were sawed very quickly, round and round, without any difficulty, not to mention every little thing with a smaller diameter!
I still remember that multi-tool saw from "SOG" with admiration and as a model to be looked up to!
Flat-round-nose pliers were good at biting not only nails, steel wire (spring steel, of course, did not try to bite smile ) and non-ferrous metals, but also used them as garden shears - for pruning small branches.
They had an interesting, very rational and technological, design solution for pliers (not the same as in the pliers we are used to).
I did not use fillets for crimping detonator caps - there was no opportunity, but they were made "according to the mind"! Yes
Screwdrivers, flat and "cross", probably only used two or three times, out of hopelessness. Inconvenient.
Well, once with a file, I filed a broken nail with it, because I didn't have a scissor in my multitool.
Against the background of an excellent saw for wood, I was unpleasantly struck by a completely "oak" can opener - once I tried to open a can of Rogachev's condensed milk on the table with it, well, just a can of the famous "red fish" in the field, at a picnic, but it was such an unsuccessful can opener (apparently made this way due to the limitations of someone else's patent, because there were more functional knives on the multitools of other companies?!), that he didn’t try to use it anymore.
Openwork stamped overlays (on the sharp edges of U-shaped handles) made of thin stainless steel during the unfolding of the set of tools soon began to snap off from their axes - "puffs" and fall to the ground - we had to watch this so as not to lose at all (especially when on lattice decks of bridges, stairs and ladders).
The net weight of the "SOG" multitool was more than 400 (for the sake of interest I weighed on an electronic kitchen scale, but I don't remember the exact numbers) grams - such a weighty thing, even without a cover. A couple of "priblud" in it remained incomprehensible to me, and half of all those multitool "bells and whistles" were practically unclaimed.
But a spoon-fork in it would not hurt! winked
In general, I sipped on myself and exploited this "universal tool" and clearly understood what exactly I wanted to see in my pocket, without unnecessary weighty "troubles" of the vaunted firms.
But mother laziness, I can’t do it “in metal”, although I have everything for this - skills, skills, and materials are the most cosmic, and tools, and what tools and equipment are not available, so I myself am both a designer and a technologist a whole bunch of specializations, and a turner-miller, and a toolmaker, and a sharpener-grinder, perhaps, a forge in a paddock - a "checkerboard pattern" of a blade cannot be obtained without a serious repair of the hammer and forge ... well, what can I say, I see everything in reality , mentally in 3D projections, as it should be, but Oblomov's golimy overcame, not a finger without an emergency to move - insidious relapses of a long and recent PTSD! wassat
And that his "SOG" ovsky multitool "military", having played enough, gave it to one Very Nice guy, an extra-class driver, now he drives around the world in his glove compartment (maybe when it will come in handy on the road)! winked
P.S. Ever since the "holy 90s", I have always liked the "knife searches" of the restless Bauman engineer Igor Skrylev (sorry, he died early - Eternal Memory to this Bright Man!), I read and re-read his richly illustrated book about knives with great pleasure. And based on materials from "Soldier of Fortune", in the mid-1990s, I even tried to repeat his first "Werewolf", but already in the manufacturing process I realized that such a monstrous "wide-purpose" hybrid was completely
to nothing, as they say "no candle to God, no devil poker." request
Igor's ideas were interesting, one might say, extravagant - it was curious to watch their wonderful embodiment "for the military" and weakened, "protected" versions "for the people"!

No matter how much I tried to use, none of the models came in. Undertools ... The only thing that stuck long ago is the German sets of forks / spoons. This is certainly not a multitool, but at least it is convenient)))) And no one can convince me that something can be replaced)))

I treat the owners of multitool in the same way as the owners of the "Vortex" or "Interskol" screwdrivers - with a bit of condescending contempt. I always carry a knife with me, modestly: either a Morovian companion, or a Hansa or Opinelian folding man.

Soviet knives used to seem cool to me and were the subject of dreams at a young age, but now those crooked creaking structures made of simple stainless steel no longer attract the eye, causing only nostalgia.

Well this is too much ... No.

I still have a Soviet folding knife (usual "camping", blade about 18 cm, in a case with a loop for a belt, not a "multi-tool")) manufactured in the seventies. So, this old thing - to this day it sharpens and cuts many times better than all my new knives. For all my "turbulent youth": with this knife they cut salads, sausages, cut wires, chopped branches - it's like he doesn't care at all, just sharpen a little guy (moreover, after sharpening the blade doesn't even really decrease in size))).

I do not know what kind of steel there is that "indestructible". But it's a fact.

    PS
This, of course, does not mean that "we always have the best." But just to what you have to be objective - and somehow study the topic in more detail before writing about it ...

The author did not mention the Chinese brand Ganzo. Its strength is enough for everyday work, and the price allows you not to feel sorry for him at work. In most cases, there is no need for the extra strength of an expensive leatherman, which is a pity to lose. I had enough cheap Chinese multi-tool without locks for seven years of work in the laboratory. I constantly used pliers, a simple knife with a serrated knife, a saw, an awl, plus and minus screwdrivers and even a file, but the corkscrew was useless.

Multitools in Russia will be difficult to promote due to conservatism and partly legislation. What models are being promoted in Russia? All sorts of KGB knives, stilettos, fur seals, Finnish knives, tanto, Caucasian dagger-shaped - almost all with a fixed blade from 22 to 30 cm long. Moreover, the length of the blade is rarely indicated at all. According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, it is not the length that is critical, but the presence of a guard, oddly enough. As for the laws in European countries, the length of the blade is most often critical there, the presence of a guard does not matter. In Germany, for example, you can use a knife with a fixed blade without any problems, but its length should not exceed 12 cm. And stilettos and daggers (everything with double-edged sharpening) are completely prohibited. That is why high-quality folding knives and multi-tools are more popular in Europe.

In the 4th photo presented here, at the bottom right, we see a knife not for those (as the author wrote)
those who wanted to take a knife "for mushrooms", on a picnic, on a business trip or to the country, most often preferred multifunctional knives.
This is a boatswain's knife, with a characteristic pile ... Here in this photo
