The Ministry of Defense has received a batch of modernized TOS-1A "Solntsepek" heavy flamethrower systems. The equipment was repaired and modernized at the Omsk Transport Engineering Plant (Omsktrasmash). This was reported by the press service of the enterprise.

Omsk machine builders handed over to the military a batch of modernized heavy flamethrower systems as part of the state defense order. The vehicles have already been loaded onto railway platforms and sent to the customer. It is emphasized that soon the flamethrower systems will arrive at the deployment sites. How many cars are in the batch is not specified.

As stated in the press service, the upgraded machines are equipped with an improved built-in dynamic protection, a GPS / Glonass navigation system and a new modification of tracks with a straight lug. Other details of the upgrade were not disclosed.

Earlier it was reported that Omsktransmash specialists are completing the development of a version of modernization of heavy flamethrower systems. As part of the modernization of the TOS, modern digital communication facilities will be received, as well as equipment for a closed data transmission segment, which will allow them to be integrated into automatic control systems (ACS) of the tactical level. In addition, long-range ammunition from TOS-1 (Tosochka) will be adapted for TOS-1 and TOS-2A, thereby increasing the range of TOS to 15 km instead of the currently available 6 km.

At present, the RChBZ is armed with about a hundred heavy flamethrower systems of two modifications: TOS-1 "Buratino" based on tank T-72 and the improved TOS-1A "Solntsepek" on the T-90 chassis. All complexes in service will be modernized. The combat vehicles will undergo mandatory modernization during the repair process.

This is very interesting news for the Russian Armed Forces. This modernization has almost reached the necessary range to allow to the TOS-1 to fight, also, and is important to remark the work also, from outside of the range of man-portable weapons, opening the option for a much safer operation of the weapon for the crews without losing effectiveness. Actually the limit would be in 17.5 Km if Im not wrong for very few man-portable mortars of 120mm with Rocket Assisted Projectiles. The necessary improvement is almost reached then. Likely some work on the ammunition will allow to the TOS-1 to be over it.

This is another of the most important modernizations that help to some weapons to avoid some structural weaknesses, after the successfull modernization of the BTR-80/82/87 and the BMP-2, making them to reach the level of protection of the crew of the good current systems, making effectively to delay some future need of robotization in the long term. Russia will do well modernizing all the units until the BTR-82 and BMP-2M standards level.

Improvements in the protection of the crew for the BM-21 (something done) and the 2S23 are likely to come. And also improvements in the self-mobility of the A-135 system and in the range of the weapons of the 125mm. Instead, the improvements of the airborne armament and the Close Air Support aviation, plus the MT-LB and the Tu-95/142 are likely to come by the way of the robotization of the current arsenals.
