In the United States is testing a new anti-tank mine XM204 the size of a suitcase
Despite numerous innovations in the field of unmanned systems, robots, artificial intelligence, infantry still plays a very important role in combat, especially in local conflicts. The US military is pursuing a plan to build a massive suitcase-sized anti-tank mine that is actually a four-submunition launcher. With the help of such a mine, dismounted units could prevent the offensive tanks.
Such a solution may be relevant in local military conflicts, as well as in conflicts in those countries that do not have a significant tank and artillery arsenal, but they need to hold out until the main forces of the allies arrive. At the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, the first trials of the XM204 large-area impact ammunition were carried out.
US Army spokesman Lt. Col. Isaac Cuthbertson stressed that the proposal to develop this weapons (ammunition) came from the American command in Europe. It is clear that in Europe, if any tanks are feared, it is exclusively Russian. The new XM204 anti-tank ammunition is designed to deter enemy tanks and other tracked vehicles.
After manually installing the XM204, specialists leave the area where the ammunition is located, leaving the monitoring sensors. Surveillance systems then report that the XM204 Top Attack fired submunitions that hit enemy vehicles, inflicting significant damage and forcing the enemy to change the direction of movement of their troops.
This approach allows you to gain time in the event of a collision with an approaching stronger enemy with armored vehicles. As noted, for the United States, the use of such ammunition in the Baltic States, whose countries are not able to independently repulse the attack of Russian tanks in the event of an armed conflict, will be very relevant.
As noted by one of the American servicemen who participated in the test of the mine, she "hears" the approach of enemy tracked vehicles and begins to track them. When tracked vehicles approach a certain distance, the XM204 fires submunitions at the target.
- emphasizes Lt. Col. Cuthbertson.
Also, the US military noted that during the tests of large mines, remote-controlled cars were used. This made it possible to study with the greatest accuracy the features of the action of the new ammunition in conditions close to the situation of a real battle.
