The first modernized Leopard 2A7V tanks entered service with the Bundeswehr
The German Bundeswehr began to receive modernized Tanks Leopard 2A7V. According to the press service of the German Defense Ministry, the first 30 tanks were transferred to one of the battalions of the 10th tank division.
The transfer of the first modernized Leopard 2A7V tanks took place at the weapons storage base in Karlsruhe, from where the tanks were transported on trailers to Bad Frankenhausen, where the 393rd tank battalion is stationed, which became the first linear unit to receive new tanks.
The Bundeswehr clarified that the battalion will receive the remaining 14 tanks for full completion (44 vehicles) by the end of the year.
The German group Rheinmetall received a contract for the modernization of 104 Leopard 2 tanks to the Leopard 2A7V variant in 2017. 68 Leopard 2A4, 16 Leopard 2A6 and 20 Leopard 2A7 tanks were subject to modernization. All of them should be delivered by 2023.
The second contract for the modernization of another 101 tanks (51 Leopard 2A6 and 50 Leopard 2A6M2) was signed in 2019. The upgraded vehicles are to be delivered to the troops by 2026.
As part of the modernization, the tanks receive new hulls and chassis, only the turret is taken from the old tanks, which is being modernized with the installation of modern aiming systems, communications, etc. Upgraded Leopard 2A4s receive the 120mm L55A1 smoothbore cannons instead of the old L44s, the rest remain with the L55s. Armor must match Leopard 2A7 level.
In the designation Leopard 2A7V, the letter "V" stands for "Verbessert", that is, modernized.
