Do not require spare parts from Russia: new Ukrainian MLRS "Bastion"
During the parade dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the new Bastion multiple launch rocket systems were presented, which are an upgrade of the BM-21 Grad system.
The modernization of the 122-mm MLRS was carried out at the Kharkov Automobile Repair Plant and the Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering named after I. Morozov, based on the requirements of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Soviet chassis were replaced by domestic ones, allegedly with much better parameters, and most importantly, they did not require spare parts from Russia.
Bastion-1 received an automated target designation system capable of working with modern command and control systems of the battlefield. Its heart is the GPS positioning system of the Ukrainian company "Orizon Navigation", specializing in GPS / GLONASS navigation. Due to the precise positioning of the vehicle in relation to the target (both on the march and at the firing position), the accuracy of shooting is significantly increased. It is expected that with the use of newer ammunition, such as the Typhoon-1 missiles tested in recent months, the effective firing range will reach 40 km. The launcher itself is also partially automated, but the layout of the machine has not changed much.
The same modern solutions are in demand in the Bastion-2 launcher, but its layout is similar to the Czech RM-70 system, since it uses a longer KrAZ-6322 6x6 chassis, which has room for another 40 missiles ready for immediate use. which shortens the download process. However, they did not install the previously planned automatic reloading system of the launcher, which was supposed to make it possible to fire a second salvo within 2 minutes. Ukraine produced only 6 Bastion-2 launchers, and all of them were presented at the parade on August 24, 2021.
