Egypt received the fourth S44 diesel-electric submarine of project 209 / 1400Mod, built in Germany
The Egyptian Navy received the fourth and final S44 diesel-electric submarine, Project 209 / 1400Mod, built in Germany. The submarine has already arrived at the naval base in Alexandria.
According to the Egyptian Defense Ministry, the submarine made the transition from the port of Kiel, where the shipyards of the German shipyard Kieler Werft TKMS are located, to Alexandria under the control of the Egyptian crew. The ceremony of handing over the submarine to the Egyptian the fleet took place on July 9, 2021 at the Kiel plant.
An intergovernmental agreement with Germany on the construction of two project 209 / 1400Mod submarines for Egypt was signed in 2011. The head Egyptian boat S41 was launched on December 10, 2015, handed over to Egypt in December 2016 and arrived in Alexandria on April 19, 2017. The second boat S42 was launched in Kiel on December 5, 2016. The Egyptian Navy received it on August 8, 2017, the boat arrived in Egypt on October 18, 2017.
In 2015, a second agreement was signed for two more submarines of this type (third and fourth). The S43 was launched in Kiel on May 3, 2019, transferred to Egypt in April 2020, and arrived in Alexandria on May 20 of the same year. Now the last, fourth submarine has also been delivered.
Submarine length - 62 m, width - 6,2 m, displacement - approx. 1400/1600 t, underwater speed - 21,5 knots, surface - 11 knots, cruising range - 11 thousand miles, crew - 30 people. In service: UGM-84 "Harpoon" anti-ship missiles and DM2A4 torpedoes (eight 533-mm torpedo tubes).
