The end of the 1960s in the Soviet Union in terms of equipping troops with military equipment was marked by the appearance of the first landing vehicles. This was a real breakthrough in military affairs. After all, it was possible to significantly expand the capabilities of the airborne units, set more ambitious tasks for the fighters.
During the existence of airborne combat vehicles, their "lineup" has changed significantly. Modern versions of BMD are a combination of firepower with relative ease with the possibility of overcoming water obstacles, the ability to land from various vehicles aviation.
The modernized BMD-4M airborne assault vehicle is currently in service with the RF Armed Forces. This is a 14-tonne armored vehicle with a 500-horsepower engine, capable of moving on various types of roads and surfaces. So, the speed on the "dirt road" reaches 50 km / h. The speed of overcoming water obstacles afloat is up to 10 km / h.
In fact, the BMD-4M is a light airborne tank designed for units of the Airborne Forces. The BMD-4M is armed with a 100-mm cannon (launcher) 2A70 with 34 rounds of ammunition, a 30-mm automatic cannon 2A72 (464 rounds of ammunition), and a PKTM machine gun. The airborne assault vehicle in this modification is additionally equipped with 4 anti-tank guided missiles.
