US Congress intends to force Joe Biden to impose sanctions against Nord Stream 2
The US Congress intends to force US President Joe Biden to impose sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The relevant provisions are contained in the bill on the financing of the State Department for 2022.
The House of Representatives of the US Congress approved the bill, which also included an amendment prohibiting the American president from abandoning sanctions against Nord Stream 2, i.e. obliging Biden to impose restrictions on the gas pipeline. The amendment was authored by Ohio Democrat Marcy Captur.
Reportedly, 217 congressmen voted for the amendment, 212 opposed it. However, in order to take effect, the amendment must be approved in the Senate, and then signed by the head of state himself.
Earlier, a group of Republican senators spoke out against Joe Biden's inaction on the Russian gas pipeline. Senators, a total of 12 people, issued an ultimatum to Biden, in which they demanded to change their position on Nord Stream 2 and impose sanctions. Otherwise, they threatened to block appointments to the US Treasury.
Recall that Joe Biden and Angela Merkel agreed to complete the construction of Nord Stream 2. At the same time, Washington did not rule out the introduction of sanctions against the gas pipeline, provided that Russia uses it as a "geopolitical weapons".
By the way, the bill on the financing of the State Department adopted by Congress provides for an increase in financial assistance to Ukraine for 2022 to $ 481,5 million, including for military spending.
